Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Sets Speed Record With The Oct. 24 Arrival Of Director David F. Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Last week we commented that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment seemed to be clearing the decks for some major theatrical-to-home entertainment announcements with a release blitz of catalog selections in October that included the unbundling of the previously released Warner Bros. Romance Classics Collection (featuring such romantic comedies as Palm Springs Weekend and Roman Adventure) as stand-alone DVD editions, a pair of three-film vintage comedy collections — Guy Kibbee Triple Feature and Glenda Farrell Triple Feature — and some blu-ray debuts that include The Green Slime and Hell on Frisco Bay.

As if right on cue, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment was back this week with the first of the three summer hits that will be heading home during the fourth quarter of this year.   This would be director David F. Sandberg’s horror smash, Annabelle: Creation, which will be available as both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions on Oct. 24.

Box office receipts were an impressive $101.1 million and making the sequel a bigger draw than the original.   The October of 2014 release of Annabelle pulled in $84.3 million.

For the record, the ARR is a sizzling-quick turn of just 74 days.   That is a new speed record for any theatrical film grossing in excess of $100 million.  Four films had previously clocked in at 81 days with that minimum level of box office performance — Beauty and the Beast (Walt Disney, $504 million); Logan (20th Century-Fox, $226.3 million); Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (20th Century-Fox, $113.7 million) and Passengers (Sony Pictures, $100 million).
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Clearly, Warner Bros. wanted to get Annabelle: Creation placed at retail in time for Halloween promotions.

As to bonus chestnuts, with the exception of deleted scenes, these are all exclusive to the Blu-ray SKU.   These are commentary by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out), two short films, Attic Panic and Coffer, plus a pair of featurettes — “The Horror Continues” and “Directing Annabelle.”

Of note, there are only three summer A-list theatrical releases (films grossing in excess of $25 million) that have not yet been given their home entertainment orders.   Two of these belong to Warner Bros. — Dunkirk and It — while Universal Pictures has Despicable Me 3.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
This sets up December this year as a very scant release month, which is reflective of both a very weak summer slate and the rush to move films from their theatrical venues to the home entertainment marketplace at ever-quickening rates.

The studios will have to “borrow” from post-Labor Day releases to fill in the gaps.

MIG Music Teams With MVD Entertainment Group For The DVD/CD Combo Pack Release Of Richard Thompson: Live At Rockpalast On Nov. 03

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
MIG Music, with domestic sales and distribution guidance provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a DVD/CD collectible set ready for fans of English songwriter, singer and legendary guitarist, Richard Thompson, which will be at retail on Friday, Nov. 3.

Titled Richard Thompson: Live at Rockpalast, it features a double-disc DVD presentation of his December of 1983 concert at the Hamburg Markthalle and his January of 1984 concert at Cannes — on tour promoting his “Hand of Kindness” album.  Plus there are three companion CDs — two showcasing the December set and the third featuring the Cannes concert.

The first event concert featured a 20-song set, running nearly two hours, while the Cannes session was cut to just 14 songs (clocking in at roughly 75 minutes).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The sets were identical for the first 14 numbers and included “The Wrong Heartbeat,” “A Poisoned Heart and a Twisted Memory,” “Tear-Stained Letter” and “Hand of Kindness,” which were all from the new album, plus earlier hits such as “Night Comes In” (from the 1975 “Pour Down Like Silver” album) and “Shoot Out The Lights,” “Wall of Death” and “Don't Renege on Our Love” (cuts from the 1982 album, “Shoot Out the Lights”).

Exclusive to the Hamburg Markhalle concert are such selections as “Both Sides Burning,” “Danny Boy,” “Great Balls of Fire” and “High School Hop.”

Icarus Films Announces Nov. 7 As The Domestic DVD Debut Date For Documentary Filmmaker Jacques Goldstein’s Black Is The Color

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Icarus films has selected Nov. 7 as the domestic DVD debut date for documentary filmmaker Jacques Goldstein’s Black is the Color, an insightful look at the history of African-American art over the past 150 years.

The context of Goldstein’s work is set against a backdrop of post-Civil War reconstruction, the Jim Crow laws of the South, World War I and the civil rights movement … right up to the modern day.

Within these constructs, the works of Whitfield Lovell, Kerry James Marshall, Ellen Gallagher and Jean-Michel Basquiat are explored.  Additionally, examples of wrong-headed attempts are given — for example, in 1969 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York launched an exhibit titled “Harlem on My Mind,” but not a single African-American artist’s work was included in the exhibit.

Another example, it took 150 years for the same museum to finally getting around to hiring a curator to fill in the gaps of African-American artists not represented in its vast collection.
Black is the Color is presented in English, French and German, with English subtitles.

The American Genre Film Archive's 4K Restoration Of The Violent Years On Blu-ray On Nov. 21

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA), with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, announced their latest 4K restoration (from the original 35mm camera negative) this past week.   It will be director William Morgan’s 1956 exploitation film (with script by Ed Wood), The Violent Years, which will be available on Blu-ray on Nov. 21.

Everything is twisted is this classic teen exploitation flick … role reversals!   We get a hint of something sinister during the film’s brief prologue that finds the Parkins — husband and wife, Carl (Art Millan) and Jane (Barbara Weeks) — getting some bad news from Judge Clara (played by I. Stanford Jolley).   We then flashback to the events that led up to to this courtroom hearing.

Paula (played by Playboy centerfold, Jean Moorhead — The Atomic Submarine, Motorcycle Gang) is their spoiled and privileged daughter, who has secretly organized an all-girl gang consisting of her high school pals, Phyllis (Gloria Farr), Georgia (Theresa Hancock) and Geraldine (Joanne Cangi).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Now you can say what you will about Ed Wood as a filmmaker, but he has twisted things nicely here … taking Paul, Phil, George and Gerald and flipping the sexes to get these four sweet things as tough chicks who rob, rape and murder their way into the headlines of the local paper, which just happens to be run by Paula’s dad.

By film’s end all will be dead as a result of their crime wave and the reason her parents are in court will finally, and ironically, be revealed.

Bonus goodies for this exploitation classic include commentary from Basket Case and Frankenhooker filmmaker Frank Henenlotter, who is joined by Ed Wood biographer Rudolph Grey (“Ed Wood: Nightmare of Ecstasy - The Life and Art of Edward D. Wood, Jr.”) and as AGFA is including a new 2K scan (with the original 35mm theatrical print) of director Brooke L. Peters’ 1961 crime/thriller, Anatomy of a Psycho, as a bonus.
