Oscilloscope Laboratories Looks To May 28 For The Domestic Blu-ray And DVD Debut Of Writer/Director Carolina Cavalli's Amanda

Oscilloscope Laboratories has tabbed May 28 as the street date for the highly anticipated domestic home entertainment physical media launch of writer/director Carolina Cavalli’s Amanda.

Both DVD and Blu-ray editions will be available. 

The film stars Italian sensation Bendetta Porcaroli — who is perhaps best known to domestic audiences as Chiara in the Netflix series Baby, and most recently opposite Sydney Sweeney in Immaculate — as the title character.   She plays a sullen, pretentious young woman of privilege who is having a difficult time in figuring out what to do with her life.   Much of that is of her own doing (which really needs to be seen on screen to be fully understood).

When you are in your mid-20s, Italian, of wealth, educated and not unattractive, your parents expect you to do something (marriage, family business … anything).   When your only friend is the family maid … yes, it’s time for some changes!   

But looking back on childhood friendships for a source of inspiration, in this case Rebecca (Galatea Bellugi — Junkyard Dog, The Apparition, Gloria!), might be something that will either make or break our heroine.  Rebecca, as it turns out, is someone who is even more messed up than Amanda is.

Great fun and offbeat, Amanda made its debut at the Venice Film Festival in September of 2022, jumped over to the Toronto International Film Festival later the same month and then opened theatrically in Italy in mid-October of 2022.  

The film continued to work the international festival circuit throughout 2022 and much of 2023.

Cleopatra Entertainment Has A DVD/CD Combo Pack Release Of Junior Wells & Buddy Guy: Live At Nightstage Ready For Blues Fans To Enjoy On July 05

Cleopatra Entertainment, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has something very special lined up for blues fans on July 5.

Long out of print, Junior Wells & Buddy Guy: Live at Nightstage is back.  Producer/director John McDermott’s captured the live concert performance of recording legends Junior Wells and Buddy Guy at the Nightstage, the famed blues and jazz venue in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1986.

It was magic, the two legends had done several albums together (including the 1981 recording of the “Alone & Acoustic” album, which didn’t see the light of day until 1991 … selling over 100,000 copies), but this was something of a home coming; a very special reunion.   

Buddy Guy had worked with Jimi Hendrix over the years and McDermott had been the producer of some of Hendrix’s most famous filmed performances … so it was only natural that McDermott, Guy and Wells would get together for this one-of-a-kind filmed concert.

This is an 11 song set (with two bonus numbers), including “Look Over Yonder’s Wall,” “Got My Mojo Workin’,” “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and “Little by Little.”

Liberator Films Has Announced That July 9 Will Be The Street Date For Both DVD And Blu-ray Editions Of The Tony Award-WInning Titanic: The Musical

Liberator Films, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will be sailing into the home entertainment packed media marketplace on July 9 with both Blu-ray and DVD editions of screenwriter and five-time Tony Award-winner Maury Yeston’s Titanic: The Musical. 

The 1997 Broadway production (which ran for over 800 performance) won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical … and the cast album was Grammy nominated.

This film recreation of the play was a 700-screen Fathom Event in November of last year and arrives with an ARR of 248 days.

Now fans can own this stunning production of Titanic: The Musical on both Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Liberator Films on July 9.   All aboard!!

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment Tags June 11 For The Physical Media Rollout Of Writer/Director Adam Wingard's Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has selected June 11 as the street date for the full-spread physical media launch of writer/director Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

The 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD selections will all be stand-alone product offerings.

The ARR is 74 days and the domestic box office take was a stellar $181.7 million.

A premium VOD window arrives on May 14, which is 46 days into the film’s theatrical run, so it is unlikely to have any impact on the film’s box office performance (if any screens are still in play).  

Because of the availability of a master of the film via VOD purchase (or rental), the “Helper” community will have four full weeks to move their own Blu-ray editions to genre fans eager to add this “Monsterverse” film entry to their library of Godzilla and King Kong movies.

Bonus features are limited to the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray SKUs.   

Topping the list is commentary with filmmaker Adam Wingard, who is joined by visual effect supervisor Alessandro Ongaro, editor Josh Schaeffer and production designer Tom Hammock.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment's First Physical Media Release Under The New Sony Pictures Distribution Agreement Will Be The First Omen On July 30

The distribution deal worked out between studio competitors, Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Studios, kicked in this past week.   One studio handling the sales and distribution of a rival studio … it just seems so very odd, but not without precedent.

Back in 1990 Giancarlo Parretti, an Italian waiter, bought MGM from Kirk Kerkorian and being without operating and production funds gutted the very profitable home entertainment unit.   He then turned around and cut a distribution deal with Warner Bros., the terms of which left him without cash flow and within months the studio was insolvent.

We don’t think the same dynamics apply here, so that’s why it is an odd arrangement.

In any case, the first release under this distribution agreement is writer/director Arkasha Stevenson’s The First Omen, a re-boot prequel of the 20th Century-Fox film franchise that began with the release of director Richard Donner’s The Omen in 1976.

Stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray editions will be available on July 30.   

With that street date, the ARR comes in at 116 days.  Domestic box office receipts of $19.3 million seem to suggest that this is the end of the line for The Omen film franchise series (director John Moore’s 2006 remake pulled in $54.6 million).

As is common practice these days, a premium VOD window will open on May 28, which means the “Helper” community will have easy access to a pristine master of the film and will (absolutely) have Blu-ray editions on the street the same day.   63 days of peddling their illicit wares before the real SKUs arrive … consumers are unlikely to be aware of the difference.

Bonus selections include a trio of featurettes — “The Mystery of Margaret,” “The Director’s Vision” and “Signs of The First Omen.”

Paramount Home Entertainment Preps 4K Ultra HD Edition Of Director Alexander Payne's Election For Delivery On July 30

Paramount Home Entertainment will be issuing a 25th anniversary edition of director Alexander Payne’s 1999 film adaptation of Tom Perrota’s 1998 novel, Election, on July 30.

Arrow Video Prepares 4K Ultra HD And Blu-ray Editions Of Director Guy Ritchie's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. For Release On July 30

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will be releasing both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions of director Guy Ritchie’s 2015 spy thriller, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. on July 30.

Starring Henry Cavill (Argylle, Enola Holmes, Stardust, Man of Steel) as Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer (Death on the Nile, Hotel Mumbai, Nocturnal Animals) as Illya Kuryakin, the film opened in August of 2015 and pulled in $45.4 million in its domestic run.   This will be its 4K Ultra HD debut.

Based on the 1960’s popular television series, the film version is faithful to the spirit of the CIA and the KGB working together for a common purpose … in this case, stopping a rouge terrorist group with nuclear intensions.

Bonus goodies include a newly prepared commentary by film critics Bryan Reesman and Max Evry, new video sessions with co-writer and producer Lionel Wigram and actor Luca Calvani (as Alexander) and two new featurettes — “Legacy of U.N.C.L.E.” and “Cockneys and Robbers.”

Plus there are five archived featurettes — “Spy Vision: Recreating 60s Cool,” “A Higher Class of Hero,” “Metisse Motorcycles: Proper and Very British,” “The Guys from U.N.C.L.E.” and “A Man of Extraordinary Talents” — and the four-part “bite-sized” behind the scenes presentation of “U.N.C.L.E.: On-Set Spy.”

Synapse Films Looks To July 9 For The Blu-ray Release Of Director Sompote Sands' Crocodile

Synapse Films, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has tabbed July 9 as the street date for a Blu-ray edition of director Sompote Sands’ 1979 (1981 domestic theatrical release) post-Jaws creature feature, Crocodile.

When Jaws charged-up the box office in 1975 it was open season for any giant eating machine — in the ocean, on land or in the air — and counted among these was Sands’ atomic mutant tale, Crocodile.

For each market, including the United States, there was a slightly different version.   Synapse has been able to acquire the original 35mm camera negative for this restoration. 

Bonus features include deleted and alternate scenes, commentary from film historian Lee Gambin and a video session with the original director Won-se Lee.  

Mill Creek Entertainment's July 2 Blu-ray Double Feature Teams Lasse Hallestrom’s Once Around With Lajos Koltai’s Evening

Mill Creek Entertainment will be back with another one its popular priced-to-collect Blu-ray double features on July 2.

Titled Double the Romance, teams director Lasse Hallestrom’s 1991 romantic comedy, Once Around, with filmmaker Lajos Koltai’s 2007 romantic drama, Evening.   

These are two films, with very different tones, about love-found and love-lost.

In Hallestrom’s Once Around, Renata Bella (Holly Hunter), the oldest of the Bella family (Danny Aiello and Gena Rowland play the parents) three offspring, is at a crossroads in her life.  Her long-time fiancé has finally revealed the truth, he has no real desire to get married and she’s now back living with her parents.   

What to do?   Indeed, what to do when you are in your mid-30s and no prospects?

Off to Florida she goes to attend a real estate sales seminar.   Perhaps she has a future in peddling condos?   Instead, she happens upon Sam Sharpe (played by Richard Dreyfuss), who is something of a force of nature.   It’s love at first sight … he’s older, well off from being very good at what he does and wants a family.

 If Sam is water, then the Bella family, especially Joe (Aiello), is oil.  Oil and water don’t mix!

We won’t give away the ending, but let’s just say that both Renata and Sam — who come from very different worlds — in the end, get what they desire.   It’s the getting there that is the most fun and Sam, by his very nature, rubs the Bella family the wrong way without even trying!!

The second feature is Koltai’s film adaptation of Susan Minot’s 1998 novel, Evening, and it stars Vanessa Redgrave as Ann Grant Lord, who is bed ridden and dying.   We enter her mind and shift immediately back to the 1950s where Ann, now played by Claire Danes, recalls the love she had for Harris Arden (Patrick Wilson).   It was a romance, with many complications, that did not work out. 

Back in the present day, Ann’s daughters, Nina (Toni Collette) and Constance (Natasha Richardson), do the best they can to make their mother comfortable in her final hours.  A connecting reunion with present day Lila (Meryl Streep) and the early version (Mamie Gummer) brings the relationship with Harris Arden full circle.
