Director Roger Corman's The Wild Angels Heads To Blu-ray On Feb. 17 As One Of Olive Films Ten-Title Blu-ray Slate

Olive Films announced a ten-strong selection of film vault treasures for release on both DVD and Blu-ray this coming Feb. 17.

We begin with legendary filmmaker Roger Corman’s summer of 1966 biker flick, The Wild Angels, which teamed Peter Fonda (pre-Easy Rider) with songstress Nancy “These Boots are Made For Walking” Sinatra in one of her rare film appearances that took place between 1964 and 1968.

It’s making its Blu-ray debut here (previously out on DVD through MGM Home Entertainment).

Of note, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Dern co-star in this all-action film … that would, of course, be Diane Ladd (nominated three times for Best Supporting Actress … including Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, both of which co-starred her daughter, Laura Dern).   Also counted among the cast members are newcomers Michael J. Pollard, Gayle Hunnicutt and in an uncredited brawl sequence Peter Bogdanovich (two years later this future auteur filmmaker would make his directorial debut with the Corman-produced Targets).   

That’s one hell of a cast for a drive-in movie … Roger Corman sure knew (knows) how to spot talent!

Bruce Dern returns with the 1968 Dick Clark-produced Psych-Out, which is also making its Blu-ray debut on Feb. 17.   Directed by Richard Rush (Best Director nominee for The Stunt Man), the film starred Jack Nicholson (also pre-Easy Rider) and Susan Strasberg, plus Dean Stockwell, Adam Roarke and future cult filmmaker Henry Jaglom … and of course the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco.

Shifting to something a little lighter, we have the late Annette Funicello starring as Dee Dee and teaming with Frankie Avalon in both Muscle Beach Party (1964) and Beach Blanket Bingo (1965).

Other vintage comedies getting a Blu-ray push from Olive Films on Feb. 17 include Kiss Me, Stupid (1964, directed by Billy Wilder and teaming Dean Martin with Kim Novak), How To Murder Your Wife (1964, Jack Lemmon and Virna Lisi) and the final of seven Bing Crosby/Bob Hope “Road” movies, The Road to Hong Kong (1962, co-starring Joan Collins, with a cameo by Dorothy Lamour).

Rounding out this ten-strong selection of new Blu-ray releases is the 1981 Ringo Starr comedy, Caveman, co-starring the future Mrs. Starr, Barbara Bach, along with Shelley Long and Dennis Quaid … and lastly, director Just Jaeckin’s 1981 film adaptation of the D.H. Lawrence novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover, with the late Sylvia Kristel (who rose to fame Emmanuelle in Jaeckin’s 1974 film of the same name) as Lady Chatterley.

Paramount Home Media Distribution Preps Dexter: Most Shocking Episodes DVD For Delivery On Mar. 17

Paramount Home Media Distribution has tabbed Mar. 17 for the release of three TV-on-DVD themed multi-disc SKUs.  And they are an interesting assembly, especially for fans of two venerable series.

First up, it’s a three-disc, ten-episode collection titled Dexter: Most Shocking Episodes.   That’s right, in a series where also every episode had shock elements, Paramount will be working with Showtime to cull out the ten MOST shocking Dexter Morgan encounters.  

Right now they are mums-the-word on which ten they’ve selected.

Next up on Mar. 17 is the double-disc, eight-episode DVD set titled Star Trek: The Original Series - Captain Kirk's Boldest Adventures.   One thing is certain, crew members of the Starship Enterprise going on away missions with their beloved captain, who just happens to be wearing different color uniforms, will not likely survive the experience. 

  

Lastly, Mar. 17 brings to fans of the Jennifer Love Hewitt paranormal series, The Ghost Whisperer: The Complete Series … a whopping 29-disc collection!

           

Trace Adkins: Live Country! On DVD From Eagle Rock Entertainment On Jan. 13

Eagle Rock Entertainment will deliver on Jan. 13 a New Year’s country music celebration on DVD for all of those Christmas gift-card holders to enjoy.   That’s the street date for the release of Trace Adkins: Live Country!

 

Filmed live this past August at The Paramount on Long Island in Huntington, New York, Country music, television and film star Trace Adkins served-up a 20 song set for his fans to stomp their feet and sing along to their favorite Adkins’ tunes.

Included in the mix are his first hit, “There’s a Girl in Texas,” plus his first number one recording, “(This Ain’t) No Thinkin’ Thing” and other selections that include “I Left Something Turned on at Home,” “This Ain’t No Love Song,” “Chrome” and “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk.”

Icarus Films Selects Mar. 17 For The DVD Debut Of Director Huang Weikai's Disorder

In a society focused on an adherence to the Orwellian model you invariably end up with something like 80 to 90 percent of the population defined as Proles (aka: proletariat).   The Proles are interchangeable cogs in a vast economic wheel driven by a central society — if you need extra labor you simply truck them in from the country and when the task is done you dispatch them home (forcibly, if need be).

There’s no need to “rule” them per say, they simply have no power and no say in how the country is run.  They fend for themselves.  China is such a society.   

Chinese filmmaker Huang Weikai, back in 2009, recognized the inherent chaos of what had descended upon large parts of his country … as a result of a central design. 

 

He took it upon himself to assemble “found footage” from something like a dozen amateur filmmakers and edited the material into a mosaic of modern China and its rapidly growing cities and the laissez faire mayhem that has sprung up as a result of the adaptation of the Orwellian model.   

Short little snippets that all share a common theme … to hell with the Chairman Mao’s “Little Red Book” and the Cultural Revolution, it’s George Orwell’s “1984” baby!

The result of his labors is the award-winning film, Disorder, which will be making its domestic DVD debut courtesy of Icarus Films on Mar. 17.

Presented in Mandarin, with English subtitles, the DVD release also includes his rarely seen 2005 film, Floating (aka: Piao) as a bonus.

The Criterion Collection Announces Its March 2015 Blu-ray And DVD Release Line-Up

The Criterion Collection has unveiled its March release slate and it, as is always the case, has something in the way of new Blu-ray and DVD product offerings that will please film affectionados far and wide.

If you are a fan of film noir, then the Mar. 17 Blu-ray and DVD release of actor/filmmaker Robert Montgomery’s 1947 film, Ride the Pink Horse, will be at the top of your list.

This moody thriller saw veteran character actor Thomas Gomez nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar … bonus features for this newly restored film adaptation of the Dorothy B. Hughes novel include commentary from film noir historians Alain Silver and James Ursini, the 1947 LUX Radio Theatre version, which featured the film’s stars, Gomez, Montgomery and Wanda Hendrix, and a newly prepared interview with Imogen Sara Smith, author of “In Lonely Places: Film Noir Beyond the City.”

Elsewhere on the Criterion release calendar for the month of March are DVD and Blu-ray editions of French New Wave filmmaker François Truffaut’s 1964 film release of The Soft Skin (with the alluring Françoise Dorléac).

Bonus features include commentary from screenwriter Jean-Louis Richard, who is joined by Truffaut scholar Serge Toubiana, plus there is a vintage interview with Truffaut (circa 1965).

Also on the foreign beat is a newly restored edition of director Ingmar Bergman’s 1972 Best Picture and Best Director nominee, Cries and Whispers … both Blu-ray and double-disc DVD SKUs are in the works for delivery on Mar. 31.

Bonus features here include a newly-mined interview session with Harriet Andersson and a 52-minute presentation titled “Ingmar Bergman: Reflections on Life, Death, and Love with Erland Josephson.”

Rounding out the March release calendar are a pair of releases from filmmaker Errol Morris on Mar. 24 — his 1988 true-crime documentary, The Thin Blue Line (Blu-ray and DVD editions) and the double-feature presentation titled Two Films by Errol Morris: Gates of Heaven/ Vernon, Florida (Blu-ray and double-disc DVD presentations) are planned — and writer/director Steve James’ 1994 sports documentary, Hoop Dreams (also configured as separate Blu-ray and double-disc DVD SKUs).

Universal Studios Home Entertainment takes the silly meter to an “11” on Feb. 17 with the comedy hit, Dumb and Dumber To, starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as Lloyd and Harry … the knucklehead brothers from a different mother who reunite for a third time (if you count that inane 2003 film, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, which featured Lloyd and Harry … but not Carrey and Daniels).

The ARR for DVD and Blu-ray (with UltraViolet) editions is a zippy 95 days and domestic ticket sales were a solid $82.1 million.

Bonus nuggets here include a gag reel, an alternate opening sequence, deleted and extended scenes and a pair of production featurettes.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment Selects Feb. 3 For The DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Rollout Of Keanu Reeves' John Wick

Keanu Reeves is developing into some of an action star with his second box office hit in a row in that milieu.   47 Ronin pulled in $38.3 million and now his latest, John Wick, tipped the box office scales at a nice $42.4 million.   

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has targeted Feb. 3 as the street date for both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions of the film … the ARR comes in at 102 days.

Bonus goodies include commentary from stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski and a half dozen featurettes, including one title “Don't F*#% With John Wick.”

Director David Midell's Award-Winning NightLights Announced For A DVD Debut By Indican Pictures On Jan. 13

When Hollywood makes a movie about autism you get Rain Man, which teamed Dustin Hoffman with Tom Cruise.   Hoffman’s character, Raymond, was a savant, capable of nifty tricks and able to more or less function in society (with limitations).

When a doctor, who is also a filmmaker, makes a movie about an individual with autism the final product is much more personal.   More insightful.

That’s precisely what Indican Pictures has headed to DVD on Jan. 13, director David Midell’s award-winning NightLights, a heartfelt story about an autistic young man, who, unlike Raymond, is somewhere else on the autistic spectrum.

Jacob Logan (Stephen Louis Grush — Lucky 7, Gracepoint, etc.) can’t just glance down at a pile of toothpicks on the floor and shout out the precise number.   He can’t count cards or rattle off statistics about airline safety … he’s a prisoner, he is a prisoner with a mind that is locked away.

He needs constant care and that falls to his sister Erin (Shawna Waldron — Little Giants, The American President).  She provides him with unconditional love and support.   She gets him through the meltdowns.  It consumes; her caregiving is a life-commitment and, in its own way, she too is something of a prisoner.

Filmmaker David Midell is uncompromising in his storytelling.   All the bumps and bruises — both physical and emotional — are here to see.   And in telling his story, he pulls from his actors incredible performances that keep you, the audience, engaged … engaged in the characters and their struggles every bit as much as filmmaker Barry Levinson did with Charlie and Raymond in the Oscar-winning Rain Man.

As much as NightLights is about Jacob and his world, so too is the story about his sister Erin and the things that affect her life.  Can she have friends?   Can she have an intimate relationship; love beyond Jacob?

Jan. 13 is a date to mark on your calendar if you are looking for one of those “indie” films that comes along from time to time that is both engaging and delivered from the heart.  Nightlights is exactly that!

Paramount Home Media Distribution To Launch DVD Edition Of The Animated Gladiators Of Rome On Feb. 17

Winx Club creator Iginio Straffi turns his considerable talents — and his Loreto, Italy-based Rainbow animation studio — to the production of his first non-Winx Club animated feature film, Gladiators of Rome.    And it’s a beauty — the production values are easily on a par with any animated feature-length film coming out of Hollywood these days.

Of note, the script is from Michael J. Wilson, whose body of work includes Ice Age and Shark Tale … and trade reports indicate that the film arrives with a production budget that comes in at over $40 million (it’s all up there on the screen).

Paramount Home Media Distribution has tabbed Feb. 17 for the domestic DVD debut of Gladiators of Rome, which follows its Nov. 11 Oscar-qualifying theatrical showcase run.

Following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii, Timo (voiced by John Schwab) is adopted and raised by General Chirone, who just happens to run the local gladiator school.   

Before you go whoa, what’s up with that plot, you have to put the thoughts of Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus and Ridley Scott’s Gladiator out of your mind when it comes to this particular gladiator school … this is a kid’s film, complete with a quartet of mischievous tiny-tike gladiators and a hero who has zero combat skills.

Of course he’s a disappointment to his adopted father in terms of ever becoming a “Hero of Rome,” but it’s not important.   Being a gladiator is just not in Timo, that is, until he falls in love with Lucilla (Jo Wyatt), the daughter of General Chirone, who has been off studying in Greece.   Her arrival home is a like a thunderbolt out of the blue and so he sets out to impress her by becoming a gladiator.

The first stop is to recruit his goofy cohorts Ciccius and Mauritius (comic relief) and then with their help track down a sorceress in the nearby spooky woods, who — as legend has it — will be the source of a magic potion that will make him an instant gladiator.   That doesn’t work out so well … yuck!!!

Instead, our boy Timo has to actually work hard and train to become a real gladiator.   Enter Diana, the Goddess of Hunt, who takes the pathetic Timo under her wing and trains him to be the greatest gladiator of them all … that is if he can defeat his boyhood nemesis, Cassio, in the arena!

Also added to the release calendar this week from Paramount Home Media are no less than five family-friendly animated releases and a trio of TV-on-DVD SKUs.

First up, Mar. 3 brings the Nickelodeon release of Paw Patrol: Marshall & Chase on the Case, which teams fire pup Marshall with police pup Chase in over 90 minutes worth of Paw Patrol fun!   

 

Arriving on the same date, Mar. 3, is a double-disc DVD set titled Bubble Guppies: Fin-Tastic Collection.   This features nearly four hours worth of adventures starring Molly, Gil, Goby, Deema and the rest of Nickelodeon’s underwater pals.

Mar. 10 brings three more kidvid sections on DVD … Blue's Clues: Get Clued Into School (a three-disc collection), Legend of Korra: Book Four - Balance (2 disc set) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 3, Volume 1.

 

On the TV series front, Mar. 10 will see Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.: The Complete Series, Matlock's Greatest Cases — a 12-episode collection on three DVDs — and Petticoat Junction: Family Favorites (eight hand-picked episodes).

James Cagney's Film Debut In Sinners Holiday To Get Feb. 10 DVD Release From Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced some interesting film library selections that will be heading to DVD and Blu-ray during 2015.

Making its DVD debut on Feb. 10 is director John G. Adolfi’s 1930 film release of Sinners Holiday, starring Grant Withers and Lucille La Verne.   Huh?   How is that big news?   1930?  

What makes this early sound film important is that it is the film debut of one James Cagney.   Plus Sinners Holiday is the second feature film for another future star, Joan Blondell.

On the same date, Feb. 10, is director Rouben Mamoulian’s 1934 film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s “Resurrection,” which was titled for the screen as We Live Again.  Teamed in the roles of Katusha and Dmitri are Anna Sten and Fredric March.

On the Blu-ray release front, there will be seven new hi-def product offers on the seventh day of April.    These are Hooper and Sharky’s Machine, both starring Burt Reynolds, director Cameron Crowe’s Singles (1992, Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillon, Kyra Sedwick and Eric Stoltz), filmmaker Brett Ratner’s After the Sunset (2004, Salma Hayek teams with Pierce Brosnan and Woody Harrelson), The Corruptor (1999, Mark Wahlberg and Chow Yun-Fat) and lastly the music scene is explored in Detroit Rock City and Empire Records.

VCI Entertainment's The Prowler Heads To Blu-ray On Feb. 3

VCI Entertainment will be giving director Joseph Losey’s 1951 film noir thriller, The Prowler, a hi-def push on Feb. 3 with the release of a fully stored Blu-ray edition.

In keeping with the company’s recent look at marketing selective Blu-ray product offerings for the collector’s market this makes a quite a bit of sense.   This Van Heflin gem, co-starring Evelyn Keyes as the object of his twisted affections, in a film noir in the traditional sense and is one of those cult-like films that has grown in stature over the years, especially with none other than Dalton Trumbo as the screen writer.  

Bonus features include commentary by film noir expert and author Eddie Muller (“Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir”), three featurettes — “The Cost of Living: Creating The Prowler,” “Masterpiece in the Margins” and “On the Prowl” — and a photo gallery.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment Doubles Up In February With Ouija (Feb. 3) and Nightcrawler (Feb. 10)

Universal Studios Home Entertainment doubles up this week with release news for two recent theatrical hits.   Both are being released as stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Packs … with UltraViolet.

First up is director Stiles White’s supernatural thriller, Ouija, starring Olivia Cooke (The Signal and as Emma in the Bates Motel television series) as Laine, the de facto organizer of a “victim” pool when she invites her friends over to commune with the dead via a cursed Ouija Board. 

The street date will be Feb. 3, which makes the ARR 102 days … ticket sales were a tasty $50.6 million.

Bonus features include a trio of production featurettes — “The Spirit Board: An Evolution,” “Adapting the Fear” and “Icon of the Unknown.”

The following week, Feb. 10, the studio is back with writer/director Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a Los Angeles “photo journalist” who evolves into a sensationalist news-manufacturing machine.  The ARR is 102 days and box office receipts are right at $30 million.

Bonus features include commentary from filmmaker Dan Gilroy and the featurette titled “If It Bleeds, It Leads.”

Fury Rolls To DVD And Blu-ray From Sony Pictures Home Entertainment On Jan. 27

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has taken a look at the 2015 release calendar and selected Jan. 27 for DVD and Blu-ray release date for director David Ayer’s WWII action flick, Fury, starring Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf.

The ARR for this “throwback” war film starring the M4 Sherman tank and its crew in the closing days of World War II works out to 102 days and ticket sales at the local multiplex were a robust $83.3 million.

Bonus features for Fury include a trio of production featurettes — “Director's Combat Journal,” “Armoured Warriors” and “Taming the Beast” — and 50 minutes worth of deleted scenes.

20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment Dumps Director Jorge R. Gutierrez’s Magical The Book Of Life Into A Jan. 27 Release Slot

With an apparent early check-out for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, 20^th Century-Fox Home Entertainment dumped filmmaker Jorge R. Gutierrez’s magical animated treat, The Book of Life, into the Jan. 27 release mix without so much as a howdy-do.

The ARR for this three-SKU product offerings is 102 days and the box office take heading into the Christmas break currently stands at $48.5 million.

Planned are a stand-alone DVD edition as well as two Blu-ray/DVD Combo Packs — one with and one without a 3D viewing option.   The premium for the 3D SKU is ten bucks.

Bonus features for this animated gem include commentary from director Jorge R. Gutierrez, a quartet of featurettes and the music video by Us The Duo, “No Matter Where You Are.”

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Readies The Judge For DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Release On Jan. 27

Hear ye, hear ye, court will be in session on Jan. 27 when Warner Bros. Home Entertainment subpoenas director David Dobkin’s The Judge for DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack release.

The ARR comes in at 109 days and domestic ticket sales are currently at $46.1 million.

What a marvelous choice of cast members.   How can you go wrong with six-time Oscar-nominated (three each, Supporting and Best, with a win for Tender Mercies in 1983) Robert Duvall being teamed with Robert Downey, Jr. (twice nominated) as father and son in a well-written courtroom drama.  

Teamed with this dynamite duo are Billy Bob Thornton (Best Actor for Sling Blade), Vera Farmiga (nominated Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Up in the Air) and Vincent D'Onofrio.   That’s an absolutely “marvelous” assemblage of acting talent.

The Palmer family, of which Downey is Hank, the attorney son of judge Joseph Palmer (Duvall), are having more than their fair share of dark problems these days.   Hank’s mother/Joseph’s wife has just died and the estranged father and son are reunited for the funeral.   And if this wasn’t dreary enough, Hank’s wife is divorcing him.

It’s one of those family gatherings that you’d just as soon skip.   His brothers Glen (D'Onofrio) and Dale (played by Jeremy Strong) are on hand, as is “Sam” (Farmiga), one of Hank’s old flames.   This group of characters will flush out the story (red herrings and Greek chorus aspects), but are secondary to the conflict between father and son, which comes into focus when the aging judge is charged with murder (willful vehicle manslaughter) in the hit and run death of Mark Blackwell (Mark Kiely — Islander, Bruce Almighty, Rain, etc.), a murderer who the judge had let skate on an earlier crime.

Was it an accident?  Or, was it justice being carried out by Judge Joseph Palmer as a redress for his previous judicial failure?   Prosecutor Dwight Dickham (Thornton) is convinced it is the latter and throws the book at him … which brings Hank reluctantly to his father’s defense.

Bonus features include commentary by director David Dobkin (Fred Claus, The Change-Up, Wedding Crashers), deleted scenes and a pair of featurettes — “Inside The Judge” and “Getting Deep With Dax Shepard.”

Also announced this week are DVD and Blu-ray editions of the newly prepared animated feature, The Flintstones and WWE: Stone Age Smackdown. 

Set for delivery on Mar. 17, WWE’s toughest fighters are on the way to Bedrock, with Fred Flintstone angling to take full advantage of it by promoting his sidekick Barney in a wrestling grudge match!   All we can say is “POOR BARNEY!”  

Bonus goodies here include two production featurettes — “The Wrestlers of FFE” and “How To Be a Stone Age Wrestling Star” — plus two bonus cartoons, “The Engagement Ring” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” both starring Fred Flintstone (voiced by Alan Reed).

Well Go U.S.A. To Release Blu-ray And DVD Editions Of Skating To New York On Feb. 17

In 1986 director Rob Reiner adapted Stephen King’s novel, Stand by Me, for the screen … a tale of four boys on a coming-of-age journey.   A dead body, bullies and other adventures kept us riveted to the action on the screen.

Now comes another coming-of-age saga from director Charles Minsky … which is decidedly more dangerous than just taking a long hike down the railroad tracks.   The film is titled Skating to New York (based on a short story by Edmond Stevens) and it will be heading to DVD and Blu-ray on Feb. 17 (after a limited theatrical run) courtesy of Well Go U.S.A.

Casey (Connor Jessup — The Saddle Club, Falling Skies) is the goalie for the local high school team, who — as the film opens — is distracted by events unfolding in the stands and misses the save on the winning goal.   His four friends/teammates, Rudy (Wesley Morgan), Boney (Dylan Everett), Jimmy (Matthew Knight) and Rudy’s younger brother, Art (Gage Munroe), rally to his side.   The game is tough and the loss hurts, but growing up in this small Canadian town is even tougher.

As teenagers often do — and Casey and his buddies are no different — they hit upon an idea to put the memory of the game (and its aftermath) behind them.   They will do the impossible, skate across Lake Ontario to New York on the other side in the dead of winter.  

Their challenge is to skate 22 miles across a frozen lake, that is always in motion, in near whiteout conditions and open to the elements during the entire trek.   They can die from exposure and they must always be on guard during the crossing to avoid patches of thin ice, which can be instantly fatal!   Skating to New York will leave you breathless!

Mill Creek Entertainment Announces Six Priced-To-Own Blu-ray "Quads" For Delivery To Retail On Feb. 17

Mill Creek Entertainment will be putting plenty of smiles on consumers with a hankering to build their Bly-ray film libraries at attractive price points.   On Feb. 17 the company will be serving up a total of six double-disc, four-film packages priced at just $19.98 each … and that’s before discounts at retail.

Being promoted under the “4 in 1” release banner are two Action sets and one each for Drama, Family, Horror and Suspense.

The first of the 4 in 1 Action Collection quads features Color of Night (1994, starring Bruce Willis, Rubén Blades, Jane Marsh and such familiar faces as Lesley Ann Warren, Scott Bakula, Brad Dourif and Lance Henriksen) Playing God (1997, Angelina Jolie is teamed with David Duchovny and Timothy Hutton), The Replacement Killers (1998, Chow Yun-Fat and Mira Sorvino) and Truth or Consequences, N.M. (1997, Kiefer Sutherland both directs and stars with Vincent Gallo).
