Mill Creek Entertainment keeps mining gold with some very interesting indie film releases that have gotten theatrical runs through non-traditional means and then have made the transition to the physical media marketplace.
The newest arrival in Mill Creek’s unique arsenal of terrific film finds for the home entertainment marketplace had a huge built-in audience eager and waiting for the film to make its Fathom Events debut on Apr. 5, 2024.
Why? Because the film was an adaptation of best-selling Christian author Karen Kingsbury’s 2020 “Baxter Family Collection” novel, Someone Like You.
First, let’s get the DVD and limited edition Blu-ray release details taken care of and then move on to what this beautiful indie film is all about. Mill Creek Entertainment has tabbed Nov. 5 for the physical media debut of Someone Like You. That yields an ARR of 214 days from the aforementioned Fathom Event theatrical run — built strictly by fan-based word of mouth — which was an impressive $5.9 million.
Despite selling millions of copies of her faith-based novels, Kingsbury has had to turn to alternate means for her book-to-film adaptations.
The first, Like Dandelion Dust, was financed independently and picked up by 20th Century-Fox for distribution … it worked the film festival circuit (2010), piled up a ton of awards, scoring over Ten Best Picture wins (23 “Best” wins in all, including Best Actress for Mira Sorvino) and then got a very limited theatrical run before being released on DVD in 2011. Like Dandelion Dust is now out of print.
Since then, Kingsbury’s film adaptations have gone through the Hallmark Channel, where she developed a working relationship with actor/writer Tyler Russell (Maggie’s Christmas Miracle), who joined with Kingsbury on the novel-to-film script adaptation of Someone Like You. This also marks Russell’s feature film debut as a director.
Kingsbury’s novel was published during the height of the Covid pandemic and instead of going directly into mass print circulation, a limited edition version was printed to aid the independent Landmark Bookseller’s store in Franklin, Tennessee (the source of her inspiration for her best-selling novel, “The Bridge”). The fan response was off the charts … and the movie-adaptation followed (also filmed in the same area).
We won’t give away the big twist in the story here, but let’s just say that if you are counted among the legions of fans of Kingsbury’s literary works, then you already know that a good supply of Kleenex should be on hand.
We meet Dawson Gage (Jake Allyn — Ride, No Man’s Land, Sweet Girl … as Ryan Taylor in the Kingsbury series The Baxters), an up-and-coming architect who has been in love with London Quinn (Sarah Fisher — Meet Me Under the Mistletoe, A Harvest Homecoming, Kiss and Cry) since high school. Just when they finally appear to have made the next step forward — from “more than friends” — London is tragically killed. Dawson’s dreams have been shattered!
Since we are committed to not giving away the big plot twist (Kingsbury novel-readers and those who caught the Fathom Event theatrical release already know), let’s just say that the Nov. 5 DVD and/or limited edition Blu-ray debut of Someone Like You from Mill Creek Entertainment should be on you must-see list (Christmas stocking-stuffers anyone?)!!
Bonus goodies include commentary from producer/writer/author Karen Kingsbury, deleted scenes, cast auditions and a behind-the-scenes featurette.
