Arrow Video Presents The Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Release Of Sacha Guitry: Four Films 1936-1938 On Nov. 14

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has tabbed Nov. 14 as the street date for a double Blu-ray/double DVD Combo Pack presentation of four films from actor, playwright and pioneering French filmmaker “Sacha” Guitry.

Titled Sacha Guitry: Four Films 1936-1938, this collection contains four films from the height of his cinematic career (World War II and the aftermath of that period were not kind to Guitry).   Included in collection are Indiscretions (aka: Le Nouveau Testament), My Father Was Right and Let's Dream are all from 1936, with the later being a film adaptation of his own stage play … he starred, directed and wrote this trio of popular comedies.   

The fourth film in the collection is Up the Champs-Élysées (aka: Remontons les Champs-Élysées) is perhaps his most enjoyable film delight.   It is a breezy history, if you will, of the famed Paris boulevard, with Guitry having fun playing multiple characters, including the school teacher who relates the history of Paris and the Champs-Élysées to a group of modern day school kids.

Bonus features include a vintage interview with Guitry (circa 1959) and two documentaries on the film career of Sacha Guity — from 1965, director Claude de Givray’s Cinéastes de Notre Temps: Sacha Guitry and Thèmes et Variations du Cinéma: Guitry (circa 1967).

All four films are presented in French with English subtitles.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Targets Dec. 5 For The Home Entertainment Debut Of Despicable Me 3

With Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s Oct. 4 press announcement for Despicable Me 3 — which gets a Dec. 5 release date — only Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Dunkirk is waiting for marching orders.

Of note, Stephen King’s It is “technically” a summer release, but for “summer-season” purposes its post-Labor Day theatrical rollout makes it a fall-season launch.    We fully expect it to be available at retail before Christmas Day.

As to Universal’s Dec. 5 street date for Despicable Me 3, it will be released as 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and DVD editions on that date.

The ARR is a leisurely 158 days and domestic box office receipts have climbed to a stellar $262.3 million … Illumination and Universal can release Despicable Me sequels until the cows come home!

Despicable Me 3 comes packed with bonus nuggets beginning with an all-new mini movie titled The Secret Life of Kyle.  There are also a deleted scene, Pharrell Williams music video, “Yellow Light,” the “Doowit” sing-along, “Minion Moments” and a collection of Minion wanted posters and mug shots.

Featurettes include “Character Profiles,” “The Making of Despicable Me 3,” “Developing Dru,” “The AVL Files,” “Freedonia Visitor’s Guide” and a trio of infomercials presented as the “Despicable Me TV” featurette.

Undercrank Productions Preps Two New DVD Silent Film Restoration Releases For Delivery To Collectors On Oct. 17

Ben Model’s Undercrank Productions has two new DVD releases from the silent-era ready for collector’s to enjoy on Oct. 17.   The first of these film restorations is director Emile Chautard’s 1921 film adaptation of the Walter C. Hackett stage play, Whispering Shadows, which is a 2K scan of the Library of Congress’ 28mm print (yes, you read that right 28mm).    

As a bonus the DVD also includes director Harry A. Pollard’s 1917 short film, The Devil’s Assistant (a 2K scan from USC’s Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive).

The other silent restoration project hitting the DVD marketplace on Oct. 17 from Undercrank Productions is titled Lon Chaney: Before the Thousand Faces.

Featured here are three silent short films — all are 2K scans from the 35mm preservation materials — starring Lon Chaney before his iconic film performances in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925).   These are: A Mother’s Atonement (1915), The Place Beyond Winds (1916), and If My Country Should Call (also 1916).  

Of note, If My Country Should Call and The Place Beyond the Winds are two of the over 500 silent films that were discovered in a buried swimming pool in Dawson City back in 1978 (the subject of documentary filmmaker Bill Morrison’s Dawson City: Frozen Time).    

Prints were shipped to this remote Yukon outpost as a last stop (nitrate) and since there was no need to return them, they were stored in the cold so that there would be no danger of fire.   Eventually, for safety reasons, the entire stash of silent film treasures were buried and the frigid nature of the area perfectly preserved them for over 60 years!

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Sets Speed Record With The Oct. 24 Arrival Of Director David F. Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation

Last week we commented that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment seemed to be clearing the decks for some major theatrical-to-home entertainment announcements with a release blitz of catalog selections in October that included the unbundling of the previously released Warner Bros. Romance Classics Collection (featuring such romantic comedies as Palm Springs Weekend and Roman Adventure) as stand-alone DVD editions, a pair of three-film vintage comedy collections — Guy Kibbee Triple Feature and Glenda Farrell Triple Feature — and some blu-ray debuts that include The Green Slime and Hell on Frisco Bay.

As if right on cue, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment was back this week with the first of the three summer hits that will be heading home during the fourth quarter of this year.   This would be director David F. Sandberg’s horror smash, Annabelle: Creation, which will be available as both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions on Oct. 24.

Box office receipts were an impressive $101.1 million and making the sequel a bigger draw than the original.   The October of 2014 release of Annabelle pulled in $84.3 million.   

For the record, the ARR is a sizzling-quick turn of just 74 days.   That is a new speed record for any theatrical film grossing in excess of $100 million.  Four films had previously clocked in at 81 days with that minimum level of box office performance — Beauty and the Beast (Walt Disney, $504 million); Logan (20^th Century-Fox, $226.3 million); Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (20^th Century-Fox, $113.7 million) and Passengers (Sony Pictures, $100 million).

 

Clearly, Warner Bros. wanted to get Annabelle: Creation placed at retail in time for Halloween promotions.

As to bonus chestnuts, with the exception of deleted scenes, these are all exclusive to the Blu-ray SKU.   These are commentary by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out), two short films, Attic Panic and Coffer, plus a pair of featurettes — “The Horror Continues” and “Directing Annabelle.” 

Of note, there are only three summer A-list theatrical releases (films grossing in excess of $25 million) that have not yet been given their home entertainment orders.   Two of these belong to Warner Bros. — Dunkirk and It — while Universal Pictures has Despicable Me 3. 

This sets up December this year as a very scant release month, which is reflective of both a very weak summer slate and the rush to move films from their theatrical venues to the home entertainment marketplace at ever-quickening rates.

The studios will have to “borrow” from post-Labor Day releases to fill in the gaps.
