Dark Force Entertainment Preps The Release Of A Blu-ray Edition Of Director Marina Sargenti's Mirror Mirror

Dark Force Entertainment, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has added a Blu-ray collector’s edition of director Marina Sargenti’s 1990 horror tale, Mirror Mirror, to its Mar. 17 release calendar.

Already in place for release on that mid-March street-date Tuesday is a new 4K restoration of director Matthew Bright’s Freeway 2: Confessions of a Trick Baby.

This is one of those odd horror “classics” that had its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May of 1990.  Yes, an indie horror film opening at the Cannes Film Festival! 

We’re guessing that this bold move didn’t spark the hoped-for studio distribution interest for Virginia Perfili’s Orphan Eyes-produced film, so at the end of August of that year she opened Mirror Mirror in selected screens in the Detroit area where her company was based.   Theatrical distribution after that, if any, is a bit sketchy (indie Shapiro-Glickenhaus Entertainment may have had a look-see deal), but in any case the film resurfaced in mid-October at the Chicago International Film Festival.

Working the non-genre film festival circuit is not what indie-produced horror films do, that’s normally reserved for arthouse entries, which is precisely why Mirror Mirror over the years has become something of a fan-favorite.   There are elements to it that do cross-over to the arthouse arena.

In any case, the following year Academy Home Entertainment, the same VHS-home entertainment distribution company that brought you the likes of Bloody New Year, Blood Evil, Blood Feast and Blood Mania, released Mirror Mirror on videocassette.   

Producer Virginia Perfili must have had enough success from this exposure as she was able to write and produce the follow-ups, Mirror Mirror 2: Raven Dance, in 1994 and Mirror Mirror 3: The Voyeur in 1995 (both featuring “newcomer” Mark Ruffalo).

As to Mirror Mirror itself, any film with the late Karen Black as the star takes on extra meaning for genre fans.   Here she plays a recently-widow mother of a teenage “Goth” daughter by the name of Megan, who is played by Rainbow Harvest (Old Enough, Streets of Gold) … she did three made for TV movies in 1991 after the release of Mirror Mirror and then dropped out of sight.   

Rainbow Harvest became something of a cult figure, first her name (that is her name) and then her appearance … she could be Winona Ryder’s twin (the resemblance is uncanny).  

That aside, Megan discovers a cursed mirror (we know this from the prologue featuring real-life sisters Traci Lee Gold and Michelle Gold (two of the Gold triplets who all appeared together in the 1984 comedy, Big Business, with Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin) in her the bedroom of her new home.   Being an outcast at her new school — for that “Boy George” look — she soon discovers that the mirror gives her supernatural powers. 

 

She uses these new powers to control and manipulate her only friend at school, Nikki (Kristin Dattilo — as Detective Barbara Gianna in the Dexter TV series and who was also featured as “Janie” in the famous Aerosmith music video, “Janie’s Got a Gun”) and to seduce the popular “cute” boy, Jeff (Tom Bresnahan), away from one of her high school tormentors, Charleen (Puppet Master II, Angel of Destruction).

The power grows and all of those who her cross her path die horrible deaths … a twist at the end brings the proceedings full-circle back to the prologue.   Mirror Mirror is a film that has aged well and continues to entertain.

Bonus goodies include the featurette titled “Reflections in the Mirror Mirror,” which features film producers Virginia Perfili and Jimmy Lifton.

20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment Picks Feb. 18 For The Release Of A Three-SKU Helping Of Jojo Rabbit

20^th Century-Fox Home Entertainment has selected Feb. 18 for the home entertainment launch of writer/director Taika Waititi’s film adaptation of Christine Leunens's 2008 novel, “Caging Skies,” which was released theatrically as Jojo Rabbit.

There will be single-disc DVD and Blu-ray SKUs as well as a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition available for consumers to choose from on Feb. 18.   

That mid-February street date yields an ARR of 123 days and box office receipts have slowly grown to $24 million.   

Word of mouth, coupled with the six Oscar nominations — including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay for actor-turned-filmmaker Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows) and a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Scarlett Johansson (ironically, she is also nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Marriage Story) — could eventually get the film to the box office level that it deserves.

Bonus features, which are limited to the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD editions, include commentary from Taika Waititi, deleted scenes, outtakes and the featurette titled “Inside Jojo Rabbit.”

Writer/Director Sophia Takal's Black Christmas Arrives On DVD And Blu-ray On Mar. 17

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will be delivering both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions of writer/director Sophia Takal’s vision of Black Christmas on Mar. 17.

The ARR is 95 days and box office receipts were $10.3 million.

Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later, Fright Night) stars as a college student and Mu Kappa Epsilon sorority sister, who discovers that a supernatural force is behind the brutal murders that are taking place at Hawthrone College!

Bonus features include commentary from writer/director Sophia Takal and the film’s star, Imogen Poots, an alternate ending, deleted and extended scenes and a trio of featurettes — “You Messed with the Wrong Sisters,” “The (Re)Making of a Cult Classic” and “Welcome to Mu Kappa Epsilon.”

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Tabs Mar. 10 For The Home Entertainment Debut Of Writer/Director Elizabeth Banks' Charlie's Angels

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s reboot of the Charlie’s Angels film franchise, writer/director Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels, starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska, arrives in the home entertainment arena as a three-SKU product offering on Mar. 10.

The ARR comes in at 116 days with domestic box office receipts registering just $17.8 million.

Planned for distribution are Combo Pack editions for both the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD SKU.

Bonus features include a gag reel, five deleted scenes and four featurettes — “Stronger Together: The Sisterhood of the Angels,” “Elizabeth Banks: As BOSSley,” “Warriors on Set: Angels in Action” and “Tailored for Danger: Styling the Angels” — and the Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey music video, “Don’t Call Me Angel.”

Frozen II From Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment On Feb. 25

Walt Disney Studios can spin additional adventures about Anna and Elsa well into the 21^st Century … every five or six years, which roughly corresponds to the cycle of new Kindergarten arrivals.  

The Oscar-winning directing team of Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee will see their latest installment in the Frozen film franchise series, Frozen II, available as a three-SKU array of home entertainment packaged media product offerings on Feb. 25, so says Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

The ARR is a current industry average of 95 days and the domestic box office haul currently stands at $466.5 million (plus another $940 million in foreign markets).

Planned for release are Combo Pack editions for both the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus as stand-alone, no-frills, DVD edition.

As to bonus nuggets, the Combo Pack editions of Frozen II come loaded with extras, beginning with a sing-along version of the movie (and a jump-to-any song feature), plus there are outtakes, deleted scenes and deleted songs (with introductions from filmmakers Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck).

There’s a Prologue, a ton of production featurettes — “Secret Room,” “Elsa’s Dream,” “Hard Nokks,” “A Place of Our Own,” “The Spirits of Frozen II,” “Scoring a Sequel,” “Did You Know???,” and “Gale Tests” — and a pretty cool feature called the “Multi-Language Reel,” which features the Elsa song “Into the Unknown” in 29 different languages.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment Announces Release Date For Both Knives Out (Feb. 25) And Bombshell (Mar. 10)

Writer/director Rian Johnson’s slick mystery, Knives Out, featuring an all-star cast that includes the likes of Daniel Craig, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Toni Collette and Christopher Plummer, will be heading home as a three-SKU selection of home entertainment package media products courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment on Feb. 25.

The ARR is a quick-to-market 88 days and the domestic box office take currently stands at a stellar $147 million.

Planned for release are 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) Combo Pack editions, plus a stand-alone DVD presentation.

Bonus features include commentary from Rian Johnson (Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, Looper, Brick) — who received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for his clever Knives Out script — a pair of deleted scenes, an eight-part production diary titled “Making a Murder,” the featurette titled “Rian Johnson: Planning the Perfect Murder” and a Q&A sessions with Johnson and members of the cast.

Also getting marching orders this week from Lionsgate Home Entertainment is director Jay Roach’s healthy-budget box office dud, Bombshell, starring Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie (who got a Best Supporting Actress nomination here, but was completely ignored for her work in Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood).

The street date will be Mar. 10 for DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions.

The ARR is a quick-to-market 88 days and the film’s box office take thus far — despite Oscar nominations for the aforementioned Margot Robbie and Charlize Theron (Best Actress) — is a paltry $29.4 million.   That number should improve as the curious seek-out the film as a result of the Oscar-season hype.

As to bonus features, there’s a seven-part production diary titled “No Easy Truths: The Making of Bombshell” and as many featuettes — “Convergence: Genesis of the Film,” “Quid Pro Quo: Charlize, Nicole, Margot, John,” “Human Dynamics: The Ensemble Cast,” “Breaking the Fourth Wall: Visual Design,” “Layer by Layer: Makeup, Hair & Clothing,” “A Unique Skill Set: Jay Roach” and “Catalyst for Change: Parting Thoughts.”
