Icarus Films Announces Two New DVD Debuts For The Month Of July

Icarus Films announced two new DVD product offerings this past week that will be streeting during the month of July.

The first of these new-to-DVD releases arrives on July 12 and it is the two-film collection titled Summers with Picasso.   Included in this collection is documentary filmmaker François Lévy-Kuentz’s latest, On the French Riviera with Man Ray and Picasso, which has been meticulously assembled from material filmed (home movies) and photographs done by American artist Man Ray (aka: Emmanuel Radnitzky) during the summer of 1937 in the south of France with his hosts, Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar (aka: Henriette Theodora Markovitch), who was the model for a number of Picasso’s works … and Picasso’s lover during this point of time.

Also at this “retreat” were the likes of poet Paul Éluard and wife, surrealist and author Roland Penrose, his lover and future wife, Lee Miller (who, as a World War II war correspondent, photograph both Buchenwald and Dachau) and Man Ray’s lover, Adrienne Fidelin, who was often the subject of Man Ray’s photography sessions (and, of note, the mystery subject of Picasso’s 1937 work titled “Femme Assise sur Fond Jaune et Rose,” which literally translates to “Woman Sitting on a Yellow and Pink Background”).

It is a moment captured in time … famous artists, writers and poets gathered to celebrate a summer vacation.   War would soon send them off in many different directions.

Teamed with Lévy-Kuentz’s documentary is documentary filmmaker Christian Tran’s Picasso and Sima, Antibes 1946, which documents the time that Michel Sima (aka: Michał Smajewski) photographed Picassco at the Grimaldi studio in Antibes during June of 1946 during the creation of his works, “La Joie de Vivre”and “Le Triptyque.”

From the pre-war summer to the post war … we follow Picassco in these two unique films.   Presented in French with English subtitles, the Summers with Picasso DVD release also includes the short film titled Guernica.

Icarus Films will be teaming with France’s premiere film studio, Distrib Films, two weeks later — July 26 — for the domestic DVD debut of Tunisian filmmaker Leyla Bouzid’s A Tale of Love and Desire.

This film festival award-winner had its premiere as the closing night attraction at last summer’s Cannes International Critics' Week, opened theatrically in France six weeks later and then did a world-hopping festival tour with domestic stops at the Philadelphia International Film Festival (October of 2021), Miami Film Festival (last November) and Seattle International Film Festival (April of this year).

In this coming-of-age film, Ahmed (Sami Outalbali — Novembre, Man Up!, Lola) is something of a fish-out-of-water while in his first year at university in Paris.  A somber young man, observant and very shy, he quickly spots French-Tunisian student, Farah (Zbeida Belhajamor), who is his opposite … vibrant, out-going and very sensual. 

An unlikely romance blooms, but Ahmed’s insecurities and confusion over social mores makes this friendship and potential love affair oh so very complicated!

A Tale of Love and Desire is presented with a mix of French and Spanish with English subtitles.

 

 

 

 

Severin Film Readies 4K Ultra HD Edition Of Filmmaker Jess Franco's Faceless For Delivery To Genre Fans On Aug. 30

Severin Films, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K film restoration (from the original camera negative) of cult filmmaker Jess Franco’s 1988 graphic horror tale, Faceless.

This new 4K Ultra HD release will be available for genre fans to enjoy just in time for the Labor Day weekend — perhaps as part of a Franco marathon — with a street date of Aug. 30.

In something of an update to Franco’s 1962 classic, The Awful Dr. Orloff, or perhaps a re-do with a bigger budget and better production values … or an homage.   Take your pick.   Faceless checks all of the right boxes, including a more coherent script, excellent cinematography by Maurice Fellous, an international cast, gruesome murders and a cameo appearance by Howard Vernon (the original Dr. Orloff).  A genre fan’s delight to be sure!!

We are introduced to Dr. Flamand (played by Helmut Berger — The Damned, The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, Ludwig) and his sister, Ingrid (Christiane Jean … as Cosette in Robert Hossein’s 1982 production of Les Misérables), who are suddenly attacked by a crazed woman who hurls acid at the doctor, but hits his sister square-on in the face instead.  

It turns out that she was a former patient, who was unhappy with Flamand’s work.  This event sets in motion the storyline for the balance of the film as Flamand takes the “necessary” steps to repair his beloved sister’s face … let’s just call his approach, unorthodox.

Before you know it, his assistant, Nathalie (played by Brigitte Lahaie, aka: Brigitte Simonin), is out kidnapping young women on Flamand’s behalf, including their latest victim, Barbara (played by Bond girl Caroline Munro — The Spy Who Loved Me … Dracula A.D. 1972, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Maniac, Flesh for the Beast … a genre fan favorite to be sure).   She is locked in the basement, with the others, which is guarded by the deranged Gordon (Gérard Zalcberg).

At this point you are thinking everything is in place for Flamand to do a face-lift, restore his sister’s beauty and have Gordon and Nathalie get rid of the evidence.  But Franco knows better, he introduces the hero of the piece, Morgan (Christ Mitchum — Chisum, Rio Lobo, Big Jake) — a detective hired by Barbara’s father (played by Telly Savalas) — and, since this is a very complicated operation, Flamand has to consult with Dr. Orloff, who directs him to a former Nazi “doctor,” Karl Heinz Moser (Anton Diffring), who apparently has some experience with this sort of face-off … face-on procedure.       

Now the race is on … can Morgan track down the kidnapped Barbara and rescue her before Flamand slices off her face!!   Several “practice” attempts by the doctor makes for a very gory lead-up to the finale, which, of course, has a twist!!

This 4K Ultra HD presentation from Severin Films on Aug. 30 comes loaded with extras.   We begin with vintage commentary from filmmaker Jess Franco, who is joined by Lina Romay, selected scene commentary by Chris Mitchum, the short film titled Therese II: The Mission, archival interest with Franco and Mitchum and five featurettes — “The Female Predator,” “Parisian Encounters,” “Predators of the Night,” “Facial Recognition” and “Murderous Passions: The Delirious Cinema of Jesús Franco.”

 

 

 

 

4K Ultra HD Of Director Joel Schumacher's Flatliners From Arrow Video On Aug. 02

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K film restoration — from the original camera negative (approved by director of photography Jan de Bont) — of director Joel Schumacher’s 1990 after-death thriller, Flatliners, set for release as a two-SKU product offering on Aug. 02.

Planned for release are 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions.

Medical students decide to play with death and get way, way more than they could have ever imagined during their respective “death” trips.  How clever, you assemble four hot young acting talents — Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland and Oliver Platt — film on location in Chicago for a couple of weeks and then retreat to Hollywood for onset shooting (magic) and you end up with a theatrical hit.

Bonus features include commentary with film critics Bryan Reesman and Max Evry, an extensive image gallery and a half-dozen featurettes — “The Conquest of Our Generation,” “Visions of Light,” “Hereafter,” “Restoration,” “Atonement” and “Dressing for Character.”

 

 

 

Critical Mass Picks July 19 For The Blu-ray Release Of Director Yuki Ogawa's Interspecies Reviewers

Bayview Entertainment will be teaming up with Critical Mass on July 19 for the double-disc Blu-ray of Hentai anime filmmaker Yuki Ogawa’s Interspecies Reviewers.

The bulletin board of the Ale & Eats tavern becomes the focal point of “succu-girl” encounters in this 12-episode collection of uncensored Hentai anime stories that blend human, elf and ah, well, other species and how they interact sexually.

Interspecies Reviewers is presented in Japanese with English subtitles … bonus goodies include clean openings and endings, promotional videos and episode previews.

 

 

 

 

 

Paramount Home Entertainment Tabs Aug. 09 For The Home Entertainment Launch Of Sonic The Hedgehog 2

When you have a blockbuster, just pick a date and do so with a smile on your face!   That’s exactly what Paramount Home Entertainment did this past week by selecting Aug. 9 as the street date for director Jeff Fowler’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The ARR comes in at 123 days and domestic ticket sales currently register $181.2 million.

Planned for release are stand-alone editions for all three of the home entertainment packaged media formats.

Bonus goodies, which are exclusive to the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra SKUs, include commentary from director Jeff Fowler, who is joined by the voice of Sonic, Ben Schwartz.

There are also deleted, extended scenes, a blooper reel, the Kid Cudi music video, “Stars in the Sky,” the animated short film titled Sonic Drone Home and a quintet of featurettes — “Finding Your Team,” “The Powerful Puncher: Knuckles,” “Rapid Fire Responses with Ben Schwartz,” “Robotnik Reimagined” and “A Sibling for Sonic: Tails.”

 

 

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore Heads Home On June 28 From Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has tabbed June 28 as the street date for a three-SKU helping of the latest installment in the Harry Potter-inspired “Wizarding World” film franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

The box office haul currently stands at $93.1 million and the ARR is a quick-turn of just 74 days.

Planned for release are Combo Pack editions for the Blu-ray (with DVD) and 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD purchasing option.

Bonus features common to all home entertainment packaged media release SKUs will be the featurette titled “The Magic of Hogwarts.”
