MVD Entertainment Group To Release The Woody Guthrie All-Star Tribute Concert 1970 On DVD On June 7

MVD Entertainment Group looks to June 7 for the DVD release of Woody Guthrie All-Star Tribute Concert 1970.

Filmed live at the Hollywood Bowl, this tribute concert to the music and legacy of Woody Guthrie was a fundraising event for The Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease (aka: Hereditary Disease Foundation) and it is now available commercially on DVD for all to enjoy.

This time-capsule concert showcases the talents of a who’s who of folk artists from the period who gathered together for the evening to celebrate the songs of Dust Bowl-era singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie, who died in 1967 from Huntington's Disease (a disease that also took his mother and two of his children).

Hosted by Peter Fonda, who was on top of the world at the time with the success of Easy Rider, and Will Geer, Guthrie’s long-time friend, the concert featured the likes of Pete Seeger (a close Guthrie confidant), Ramblin' Jack Elliott (Guthrie was his mentor after World War II), his son, Arlo Guthrie, Country Joe McDonald, Joan Baez, Odetta, Richie Havens and Earl Robinson.

The concert itself features 19 of Guthrie’s songs, including “Nine Hundred Miles” (Richie Havens), “This Train is Bound for Glory” (Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Earl Robinson and Richie Havens), “I Ain’t Got No Home” (Arlo Guthie and Pete Seeger) and ensemble presentations of “This Land is Your Land” and “This Train is Bound for Glory.”

Bonus nuggets include three never-before-seen songs performed by Joan Baez, Odetta and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, concert rehearsal footage and audio interviews with Arlo Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott.

Paramount Home Media Taps June 4 As The Street Date For The 30-Disc DVD Release Of The Brady Bunch: 50th Anniversary TV & Movie Collection

Paramount Home Media is about to unleash a flurry of DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD products for delivery to consumers during the month June … this week they teased a few of these, with more to following in the coming days.

So let’s get to it.   There is a “monster” release that arrives on June 4 in the form of a 30-disc box set celebrating the 50^th Anniversary of the Brady Bunch television series.   That’s right, 30 DVDs in one collection.

Titled The Brady Bunch: 50th Anniversary TV & Movie Collection, this “monster” collection contains The Brady Bunch: The Complete Series (all 117 episodes), which made its network debut on September 26, 1969 and wrapped up in March of 1974.   50 years ago … where does the time go?

Both of the theatrical releases are also featured in the collection — The Brady Bunch Movie (1995, pulling in $46.6 million in box office receipts) and A Very Brady Sequel (late summer of 1996, generating $21.4 million in ticket sales) — as are the made for TV movies, A Very Brady Christmas (1988), Growing Up Brady (2000) and The Brady Bunch in the White House (2002).

 

Rounding out the collection are the two short-lived series, The Brady Brides (7 episode series in 1981 featuring Maureen McCormick and Eve Plumb) and The Bradys (5 episodes, 1990), plus the animated series, The Brady Kids: The Complete Animated Series (all 22 episodes that aired in 1972 and 1973).

Another important release on the way from Paramount Home Media is the 4K Ultra HD launch of director Michael Bay’s 2016 film adaptation of Mitchell Zuckoff’s book, “13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi,” which was titled for the screen as 13 Hours and/or 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.

This will be available on June 11 and it arrives with a bonus Blu-ray disc that houses the bonus features — “For the Record: Finding the Truth Amid the Noise,” “Uncovering Benghazi's Secret Soldiers,” “Preparing for Battle: Behind the Scenes of 13 Hours,” “Operation: 13 Hours Premiere” and “In Memoriam.”

And our friends Cartman, Kyle, Stan and Kenny return on May 28 with the release of both double-disc DVD and Blu-ray editions of South Park: The Complete Twenty-Second Season.

The collection of animated adventures features all ten episodes, including a session with Al Gore, a bike parade and fun at Halloween, plus deleted scenes and “mini-commentaries” from Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Arrow Video's 2K Restoration Of Leszek Burzynski’s Trapped Alive Arrives On Blu-ray On May 21

The Forever Mine waits … cold, dark, abandoned and destined for a classic victim pool to arrive within its maze of tunnels in a most unexpected way.   And within those tunnels lurks a bloodthirsty fiend … yes, the Forever Mine waits, but it won’t be abandoned for much longer!

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution guidance provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 2K restoration of director Leszek Burzynski’s 1988 horror tale, Trapped Alive, ready for Blu-ray release this coming May 21.

The classic “victim pool” of a body-count slasher film is usually a group of unsuspecting teens and/or college-aged kids who are out for a good time — with the females of the group attractive and well-endowed.   Be it a party, a remote cabin in the woods, an abandoned research facility, an empty house or a car or motorhome that breaks down far from civilization, the aforementioned “victim pool” arrives there and all hell breaks loose.

But how Burzynski assembles his “victim pool” and how he gets them to the “place” where all hell will break loose is, by any standard, unique!

It’s Christmas Eve and cute young things Robin (Sullivan Hester) and Monica (Laura Kallison) are on their way to a party, but they are hijacked on a remote country road by a trio of escaped prisoners lead by Louis “Face” Napoleon (Alex Kubik — Be Cool, Bad Girls), Mongo (Michael Nash — The Color of Money) and Randy (Mark Witsken).   

Randy, a young and somewhat innocent prisoner, does the driving while Face and Mongo check out the merchandise, but when Billy (Randy Powell  — Battletruck, Class Reunion), a local cop gets on their tail, Randy foolishly drives off the road and lands on top of a boarded-up mine shaft!   It gives way and down, down they go.

Victim pool, boarded-up mine shaft and boom, they’ve arrived.   

Trapped Alive breaks briefly into three storylines at this point, one of which is not necessary — veteran actor Cameron Mitchell literally phones-in his role as the concerned father of Robin.   The other two elements are fun and a little weird.

The occupants of the car are trapped in the mine and start wandering around in the maze of tunnels and soon discover that they are not alone.   Meanwhile, Billy goes to a nearby farmhouse to use the phone and meets Rachel (Elizabeth Kent), who seduces him and tells him all about the creepy mine.

Soon these two storylines will merge, we will discover how Rachel is tied into all of it, Billy will zip it up and get back to work and members of the victim pool are slaughtered.  There’s even time for Robin to strip down to her underwear and go swimming before the identity of the mutant killer is revealed.

Bonus features include not one, but three newly-prepared commentary tracks.  The first features writer/director Leszek Burzynski, the second teams horror writer Josh Hadley with special effects artist Hank Carlson and the third feature The Hysteria Continues.   There is a newly-minted documentary on the making of the film titled There’s Evil Underground and a pair of featurettes — “Upper Michigan Tonight” and “Leszek Burzynski: The Early Years.”

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment To Release The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part On May 7 • Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase Apr. 2

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has selected May 7 as the street date for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, which will be served-up as a three-SKU product offering.

The ARR works out to 88 days and box office receipts were a stellar $101.3 million.

As for SKU configuration, there will be Combo Packs for both the Blu-ray (with DVD) and 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) formats, as well as a stand-alone DVD edition.

Bonus features common to all home entertainment packaged media editions include commentary “by filmmakers” — we assume that means director Mike Mitchell (Trolls, Shrek Forever After, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo) and perhaps the screenwriters or producers — outtakes, deleted scenes, the LEGO short titled Emmet’s Holiday Party, the “Super Cool” music video by Beck (featuring Robyn and The Lonely Island) and a pair of featurettes — “LEGO Sets in Action” and “LEGO Designers.”

Exclusive to the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack offerings are the “Everything is Awesome Sing-Along” and the additional featurette titled “They Come in Pieces: Assembling The LEGO Movie 2​.”

Well, that was quick.  In other release news this week, Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase is making its way to the home entertainment marketplace on Apr. 2 as both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions. 

Warner Bros. (the studio) announced in the early months of this year that director Katt Shea’s remake of Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase would be released on a limited theatrical basis beginning on March 15.   The studio didn’t report out any box office numbers … usually an indicator that the receipts were really, really bad.

It is actually playing in a few theatres (a Fandango search shows where and when … if you are in California and willing to drive to Clovis, you can see it), so with everything in place for an Apr. 2 home entertainment push, the home entertainment group figured out early on that the theatrical launch was just for show (perhaps even something in the production agreement that required the studio to release the film “theatrically). 

For the record, joining the list of silver screen actresses who have played Nancy Drew is Sophia Lillis (as Beverly in It and the forthcoming It: Chapter Two) … Bonita Granville launched the series back in 1938 (four films in all) and Emma Roberts starred in director Andrew Fleming’s 2007 film that was simply titled, Nancy Drew.

Bonus features include a gag reel and a pair of featurettes — “A Sleuth, A Girl and an Inspiration,” “Pink Footprints: Touring Twin Elms.”
