MVD Entertainment Group's Marquee Collection Grows By Two With Blu-ray Editions Of Barbershop And Barbershop 2: Back In Business On Sept. 11

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
MVD Entertainment Group just got two new Marquee Collection additions with news this past week that director Tim Story’s 2002 comedy blockbuster, Barbershop, and its 2004 hit-sequel from director Kevin Rodney Sullivan, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, will be available for the first time on Blu-ray on Sept. 11.

Already heading home as a Blu-ray product offering — also for the first time — on Sept. 11 is the 2005 spin-off, Beauty Shop, starring Queen Latifah.

Ice Cube plays Calvin Palmer, the proprietor of a South Side Chicago barbershop that he inherited from his father.   The place is more than just a barbershop, it is a gathering place, but Calvin doesn’t quite get that, so he decides to cash out and do something else with his life (big plans to set up a recording studio).

That’s the catalyst, his desire to abandon his special role in the local community, that sets things in motion … he sells the place to Lester (Keith David), the local loan shark, and then has second thoughts about that decision when one of his employees, Ricky (Michael Ealy), is falsely arrested by the police.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
A pick-up truck owned by Ricky — a former gangbanger with two strikes against him — ripped an ATM out of the wall of the local market and made off with it.   When Calvin discovers who the real ATM bandit is he knows in his heart-of-hearts that he has to set things right.

Meanwhile, news of the sale — and closing — of the barbershop does not sit well with the staff, who demand that Calvin “un-think” his decision!

Barbershop is a non-stop laugh fest that swings back and forth between Calvin’s frustrations in trying to undo what he has done and the antics of the staff, especially Eddie (played by Cedric the Entertainer), who has wild theories on just about any aspect of black culture.

Bonus features include commentary by director Tim Story (Taxi, Ride Along, Think Like a Man, etc.), writer Don Scott, Jr., producers Robert Teitel (Soul Food, Men of Honor, Mudbound, etc.) and George Tillman, Jr. (Roll Bounce, Mudbound), plus seven deleted scenes with optional commentary from filmmaker Tim Story.

Other bonus nuggets are outtakes, a blooper reel, a quartet of “Behind-the-Scenes” featurettes, the featurette titled “Barber Banter” and the Fabolous music video — with P. Diddy and Jagged Edge — titled “Trade it All.”

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Barbershop was such a monster theatrically that a sequel was a no-brainer … so two years later director Kevin Rodney Sullivan delivered Barbershop 2: Back in Business, which match the original almost dollar for dollar at the box office.

Calvin has settled into his role in the neighborhood, most of the cast from the original Barbershop are back — including Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer) and Terri (played by recording artist Eve) — and we have the introduction of Gina (Queen Latifah, who will star in the spin-off, Beauty Shop in 2005).

The MacGuffin this time is the arrival of big time developer Quentin Leroux (Harry Lennix) and his Nappy Cuts upscale operation across the street from Calvin’s place.   The fun and chaos spin out from this, but we all know — or at least sense — that order will be restored to the neighborhood by the final reel.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyBonus features include two commentary options.   One features cast members Cedric the Entertainer, Sean Patrick Thomas, Troy Garity and Jazsmin Lewis, while the second teams director Kevin Rodney Sullivan (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) with the aforementioned producing team of George Tillman, Jr. and Robert Teitel.

Additional bonus goodies included with the Marquee Collection Blu-ray presentation of Barbershop 2: Back in Business are a half-dozen deleted scenes, outtakes, the Mary J. Blige music video “Not Today,” the music video from Sleepy Brown, “I Can’t Wait” and a behind-the-scenes photo gallery.

Icarus Films Targets Aug. 14 For The Domestic DVD Debut Of Director Lucas Belvaux’s This Is Our Land

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Two weeks ago Icarus Films announced that the true-life serial killer shocker from France’s Distrib Films, Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart, would be making its domestic DVD debut on Aug. 14.   It’s a stunning film that should not be missed.

This week, Icarus Films is teaming once again with Distrib Films for the domestic DVD debut of director Lucas Belvaux’s “torn from the headlines” political thriller, This is Our Land.   The street date assigned is Sept. 4.

A quick two-screen theatrical release — DVD to the rescue for those who couldn’t be in either Los Angeles or New York City — yields an ARR of 137 days and arthouse ticket receipts of $11,567.

This fictionalized drama focuses on the world of current French politics, which are always testy, but with the rise Marine Le Pen and the FN — which saw her go head to head against Emmanuel Macron last year for the presidency of France — it was only natural that films would emerge on the subject.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
We are introduced to Pauline Duhez (Émilie Dequenne — Our Children, Rosetta, Brotherhood of the Wolf, etc.), a nurse in rural France, who becomes an unlikely candidate for the mayor of her town when she is recruited by a far-right political operative to try her hand at politics.

She soon finds herself cut off from the community — she more or less represents French society as a whole, some of whom see their country “invaded” by refuges (and terrorists), while others fret that the dream of a united Europe is quickly slipping away.   In the end, her entry into politics becomes personally overwhelming.

This is Our Land is presented in French with English subtitles.

Carrying a priced-to-collect SRP of just $14.98, this unique collection features in-depth profiles on thirty screen legends — 15 female and 15 male stars.

Included in the fan-pleasing mix are presentations for Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway — famed for Bonnie and Clyde (among other films) — 007/James Bond legend, Sean Connery, filmmaker/actor Clint Eastwood, John Travolta, Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino.   Also getting profiled are the likes of Shirley MacLaine, Ann-Margret, Raquel Welch and Barbra Streisand.    Thirty in all!!!

Arrow Video Looks To Sept. 25 For The Release Of A Blu-ray Edition Of Director Ted Post's The Baby

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
They just don’t come any odder than producer/writer Abe Polsky’s The Baby, which will be getting a Blu-ray push from Arrow Video this coming Sept. 25 — domestic sales and distribution expertise courtesy of MVD Entertainment Group.

Abe Polsky wrote the original script sometime in the late 60s and optioned it off to the production team of Bobby Roberts and Hal Landers, who were responsible for such films as Monte Walsh, The Hot Rock and Death Wish in the early 1970s.   At some point the legendary William Castle was attached to the film, but then everyone fell out of love with the project and it got “shelved.”

Polsky, who had, in the meantime, worked on scripts for writer/director Martin B. Cohen’s Rebel Rousers and director Jerry Jameson’s Brute Corps, saw that The Baby wasn’t going to happen, so he did the only sensible thing and bought it back with the idea of producing it himself.

By the spring of 1973 it was ready for releases with Ted Post as the director (busy year for him … The Harrad Experiment and Magnum Force) with a cast that featured Ruth Roman and Anjanette Comer, plus Marianna Hill (who had worked with Ted Post on High Plains Drifter) and Susanne Zenor as the “sisters” Germaine and Alba … and, of course, David Mooney as the title character.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

What makes the film particularly creepy is that mom (Ruth Roman) and her two daughters have turned the other sibling (Baby) into a man-child, or better yet, a man-baby, complete with diapers and crib!   It all has something to do with collecting welfare for his maintenance, etc., etc. … any attempts by him to assert himself are met with beatings, taunts and the old standby, an electrified cattle prod.

The creepier part — complete with a terrific third act payoff — is the arrival of the social worker, Ann Gentry (Anjanette Comer), who suspects that Baby is being abused.   A backstory story has her living alone with her mother, Judith (Beatrice Manley), having lost her husband to some unspecified “accident.”

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
There are hints that something else is going on, but Polsky’s script keeps you focused on the mom and the daughters, so that Ann’s real motives come as a brilliant twist.    Swimming, anyone?

Bonus nuggets include commentary from MovieMaker Magazine’s Travis Crawford, a new retrospective titled “Down Will Come Baby” hosted by professor Rebekah McKendry (USC School of Cinematic Arts) and two vintage audio interviews — one featuring Ted Post and the other David Mooney.
