Oscilloscope Laboratories Tabs Apr. 9 For The Release Of Blu-ray And DVD Editions Of Documentary Filmmaker Alexandria Bombach's On Her Shoulders

In the summer of 2014 the news channels were filled with scenes of thousands and thousands of Yazidis trapped on a mountain somewhere in Iraq.   It was likely the first time most Americans had heard of the Yazidi people, a group with distinct religious and socio-ethnic origins, who have lived in the northern area of Iraq for over a thousand years … and maybe longer.

ISIS had overrun their villages after the Iraqi army collapsed and those that could flee the deadly onslaught did so and were now trapped without water or food on the slopes of some godforsaken mountain … cable news audiences were drawn to their plight.   And then they were rescued … food arrived and the story just as quickly faded from view.   

As often happens, the news cycle ran its course and the Yazidi were quickly forgotten. 

However, documentary filmmaker Alexandria Bombach took up the story of the aftermath the ISIS attacks and the Sinjar Massacre with her award-winning film, On Her Shoulders, which focuses on one survivor who was not lucky enough to escape the assault and make it to the mountains.

Oscilloscope Laboratories announced this past week that On Her Shoulders will be available as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings on Apr. 9.   The film, in addition to working the international and domestic film festival circuits, including Best Documentary at Sundance in 2018, got a brief theatrical release and qualified for the Academy Awards Best Documentary Shortlist.

The ARR works out to 151 days.

Nadia Murad, a young woman with limited knowledge of the outside world, was captured by ISIS when they overran her village.   600 fellow villagers, including her mother, were murdered on the spot.   The young women and girls, however, were spared since they were of value.   Sex slaves to be raped at will.   Such was Nadia’s fate.

She was able to escape and this simple young woman was eventually named a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for the dignity of survivors of human trafficking.  A face to the misery, who was interviewed over and over again about what it was like to be a prisoner, to be raped and to face death at any moment … and in the process she reached the conclusion that the press and those of good will who were trying to help her were asking the wrong questions.

Filmmaker Alexandria Bombach follows Nadia’s growth from naïve young woman to an important voice for her people.   An amazing transformation caught on film and one that is well-worth seeing.

On Her Shoulders is presented with a mix of Arabic, English and Kurish, with English subtitled where appropriate.   Included as a bonus feature is a video session with filmmaker Alexandria Bombach.

 

Mill Creek Entertainment Readies DVD And Blu-ray Editions Of Laura Linney's The Big C: The Complete Series For Release On Apr. 16

Mill Creek Entertainment, which announced just last week newly restored Blu-ray editions of iconic action filmmaker Andy Sidaris’ Malibu Express and Hard Ticket To Hawaii for delivery on Apr. 16, added to this mid-April release mix with news this week that the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning Showtime series, The Big C, will be available as both six-disc DVD and Blu-ray collections.

The Big C: The Complete Series features all 40 episodes and comes complete with Digital Copy.

Cathy Jamison (Laura Linney — Emmy Winner for Outstanding Lead Actress and Golden Globes’ winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series) is a Minneapolis high school teacher who gets some very bad news.   She is dying from cancer, specifically melanoma and has but a short time to live.    

Three months on the short side and maybe as much as five years with some luck.  After the diagnosis sets in, Cathy finds the news liberating.   She kicks her husband Paul (Oliver Platt) to the curb and gets in the face of her lay-about teenage son, Adam (Gabriel Basso) … and she’s just getting started.   Students, no more BS starting right now!!!

Also added to Mill Creek Entertainment’s Apr. 16 priced-to-collect DVD and Blu-ray release calendar this past week is the double-disc, six-film DVD collection of Soul Team Six.   Six classic blaxploitation films from the glory days of the 1970s … with Digital Copy and priced at just $14.98.

So what’s in the mix?   Leading the way is writer/director Laurence Merrick’s fall of 1970 film release of Black Angels, which pits two rival motorcycle gangs — Serpents (the white gang) and the Choppers (black brothers) — in a fight to the death.   Seriously, “an all-out fight to the death!!!”

Also from 1970 is the Aaron Spelling MOW Black Brigade (aka: Carter’s Army), starring Stephen Boyd as a white officer in command of an all-black squad of soldiers — Roosevelt Grier, Richard Pryor, Moses Gunn and Billy Dee Williams are among the GIs. 

Also in the mix are both director John Evans’ The Black Godfather (1974), starring Rod Perry, Damu King, Jimmy Witherspoon, Diane Sommerfield and Don Chatain, and writer/director Matt Cimber’s The Black Six (1973) … Moose King (John Isenbarger) doesn’t like Eddie (Robert Howard), a black kid, dating his sister (Cindy Daly), so Moose and his motorcycle gang beat the kid to death.   

 Of course that was a mistake … Eddie’s brother, Bubba (Gene Washington) has his own motorcycle “club,” comprised of hard-working Viet Nam vets (played by NFL players … Mercury Morris, Carl Eller, Lem Barney, Willie Lanier and Joe Greene) and when word arrives that Moose killed his brother it is all-out war!!

Rounding on the mix is writer/director Lee Frost’s 1975 film release of Black Gestapo, also starring Rod Perry, and Black Fist, starring Richard Lawson as a up-and-coming boxer who is taken advantage of … when he rebels his friends and family members are murdered and he goes into hiding until he can exact his revenge!

Arrow Video's 2K Film Restoration Of director Enzo G. Castellari’s Keoma Arrives On Blu-ray On Apr. 16

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution guidance provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has selected Apr. 16 for the Blu-ray release of a new 2K film restoration (from the original 35mm camera negative) of director Enzo G. Castellari’s legendary Spaghetti Western, Keoma, starring Franco “Django” Nero as the title character.

It’s 1976 and the glory days of the Spaghetti Western are beginning to fade.  Legend has it that Castellari approached Nero and suggested that a real sequel to the 1966 hit, Django, might be a fitting close-out to the genre.   Manolo Bolognini, the producer of the original Django, was on board with the idea and as soon as Nero’s commitment to director William A. Graham’s 21 Hours at Munich was wrapped production would begin on Keoma. 

A script was commissioned, but tossed out on the first day of production and a whole different outlook for the project was agreed upon … there was no turning back.   Over the next eight weeks a story was improvised and the legend of Keoma was born.

What emerged is a story about a half-breed Civil War veteran by the name of Keoma, who returns home to find that his three half-brothers have joined the sinister Caldwell (Donald O'Brien) to rule the town with an iron fist.   To make matters worse, there is a plague outbreak … it is figuratively the “end times.”

Of course Keoma is having none of this and takes on Caldwell and his thugs with the help of a his father (played by William Berger), a freed slave named George (Woody Strode) and Liza, a pregnant woman (Olga Karlatos) … he is guided in this one-sided mission by the visions of a woman who seems to be a “Witch” or a mystic of some kind (played by Gabriella Giacobbe).

Violent to be sure, but radically different from the traditional Spaghetti Western motif, Keoma emerged as a unique film vision that has, perhaps surprisingly, stood the test of time.

Bonus goodies include both the original Italian-language track (with newly-prepared subtitles) and the theatrical English-language dubbed version (released in 1978 in the United States).   There is also a newly-prepared commentary track featuring Spaghetti Western experts C. Courtney Joyner and Henry C. Parke.

Other bonus nuggets include the new video session with star Franco Nero titled “The Ballad of Keoma” and six additional featurettes — “Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust,” “Writing Keoma,” “Parallel Actions,” “The Flying Thug,” “Play as an Actor” and “Keoma and the Twilight of the Spaghetti Western.”
