Artsploitation Films' Oct. 8 DVD Debut Of Horror Stories ... Update

For additional information on this Artsploitation Films release: Click Here

The venerable horror anthology gets a fresh look on Oct. 8 with Artsploitation Films delivers the South Korean film entry, Horror Stories.
Four separate stories from four different filmmakers are spun around the conceit of a beautiful high school girl (Kim Ji-won) being kidnapped by a crazed psycho (Yoo Yeon-seok) who cleverly forestalls what she believes to be the evitable — her rape and murder — by amusing her captor with tales of horror.
If you are a fan of those great horror anthologies of the 1970s — Asylum, The House That Dripped Blood, Tales From the Crypt, etc. — then you are going to feel right at home here.   Only, kick the violence, the blood and gore up a notch or two.
Min Kyu-dong handled the introduction and connecting segments, with filmmakers Jeong Beom-shik (Epitaph) delivering “Don’t Answer the Door” (two kids are left home alone with instructions not to answer the door); Yim Dae-woong “Endless Flight” (a serial killer with a captive audience); Hong Ji-young cooks up “The Secret Recipe” (an evil step-sister steals her sister’s groom much to her regret) and the filmmaking team of Kim Gok and Kim Sun takes us for a zombie plague ride in “The Ambulance.”

A little uneven, but that’s to be expected, but overall Horror Stories from Artsploitation Films will not disappoint.   In Korean with English subtitles.

Bernadette O'Farrell and Patricia Driscoll took on the role of Maid Marian, while Alexander Gauge starred as Friar Tuck and Archie Duncan was Little John.

Green Apple Entertainment's A Christmas Tree Miracle Arrives On DVD On Dec. 3

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
A lot of families forget what Christmas is all about, and you can count the George family as one of them.  That’s the family in director J.W. Myers’ A Christmas Tree Miracle, out Dec. 3 on DVD from Green Apple Entertainment.

The set up has all the makings of an ugly Christmas — the father, David (Kevin Sizemore — Under the Dome, Red Line) is wrapped up in his job: his wife, Julie (Claudia Esposito — Doughboy, Flight to India) is too on edge to focus and teens Nick and Natalie (Barrett Carnahan and Emily Capehart) only care about the gifts.   Only young Nina (Siomha Kenney) seems to know what Christmas is really about.

When David loses his job and the family continues living its privileged suburban life as if nothing happened, something awful is bound to happen.  It may take the unexpected kindness of a near-stranger to remind this family exactly what Christmas is all about.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Instead of just involving the White House or just blowing it up, this time director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) goes primarily inside of it.   And then blows it up.

White House Down comes to DVD and Blu-ray Disc Nov. 5 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, and fans will want to go with the Blu-ray on this one, getting more than an hour’s worth of bonus features, include an exclusive gag reel and nine exclusive making-of featurettes.    Both the DVD and Blu-ray feature four featurettes.

The ARR works out to 130 days and the box office take was $72.8 million.

Also getting a swift-to-market push is Breaking Bad: The Final Season, which just launched its final cable run on Aug. 11.   Both DVD and Blu-ray sets will be available to own on Nov. 26.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Bonus features include commentary on all eight episodes, four featurettes — “The Main Event,” “The Final Showdown,” “Life of a Show Runner” and “Behind-the-Scenes of the Alternate Ending” — deleted and extended scenes, a gag reel and a three-minute alternate ending (which seems very intriguing).

Image Entertainment's Paradise On DVD And Blu-ray Nov. 12

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Meet Lamb (Julianne Hough — Rock of Ages, Footloose, Safe Haven, etc.), she’s a 21-year-old devout Christian, a proper, God-fearing young woman out of Montana, who, well, is in for a shock.

She’s the subject of writer/director Diablo Cody’s Paradise, due out from Image Entertainment on both DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 12 … a mid-October release in theatres (to raise awareness) is also planned.

After a near-fatal plane crash leaves her seriously burned, Lamb’s faith is tested when she decides to use her insurance payout to try out a list of untried sins in the only place appropriate in the nation: Las Vegas.

A bartender named William (Russell Brand) and a card dealer known as Loray (Octavia Spencer — The Help, Fruitvale Station) help out with the little things: binge drinking, tattoos and quite a bit of soul-searching.

Bonuses include an audio commentary with writer/director Diablo Cody (Oscar-winner for her Juno script and creator of the United States of Tara comedy series), behind-the-scenes footage and a trailer.

Remington And The Curse Of The Zombadings On DVD Nov. 19 From Ariztical Entertainment

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Serial killers!  Homophobe curses!  Gay zombies!  It can only be Remington and the Curse of the Zombadings, out Nov. 19 from Ariztical Entertainment.

This irreverent little ditty (Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington) comes from the Philippines and follows ladies man Remington (Mart Escudero — Hide and Seek, My Monster Mom), who mocks a drag queen as a child and pays the price: 15 years later, the gay curse takes affect.  Remington has just hours to convince a straight man to switch sides, or he becomes gay forever.

Oh, and did we mention that there’s an anti-gay serial killer on the loose?  And that drag-queen zombies are invading?

This comedy was all the rage in the Philippines and as the original title suggests, more gay-zombie/homophobe serial killer/drag queen curses could be in our near future.   Ariztical Entertainment may have latched onto a franchise in the making here!

Warner Home Video's Pacific Rim On DVD And Blu-ray Oct. 15

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Writer/director Guillermo del Toro’s monsters from another dimension, Pacific Rim, will get a three-SKU home entertainment launch from Warner Home Video on Oct. 15.

The ARR is swift-to-market 95 days and summer ticket sales currently stand at $100.4 million.

Planned are double-disc DVD edition, a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and a 3D/2D Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, all featuring UltraViolet.

You have to give del Toro credit for coming up with a mix-genre sci-fi thriller.   Pacific Rim is a little bit Transformers, a little bit Godzilla and all nicely packaged in del Toro’s unique visual style (think: Pan's Labyrinth) … and he pulls it off without a marquee name — Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi are not exactly household names.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Bonus features include commentary from filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, deleted scenes, a blooper reel and four featurettes — “Drift Space,” “The Digital Artistry of Pacific Rim,” “The Shatterdome” and “Focus Points.”

Exclusive to the Blu-ray SKUs is a bonus feature described as “The Directors Notebook.”

Wolfe Video's Margarita Ready For DVD On Oct. 29

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Dominique Cardona and Laurie Colbert teamed up for Margarita, an award-winning slice-of-life drama that will be making its way to DVD courtesy of Wolfe Video on Oct. 29.

Ben (Patrick McKenna) and Gail Lawson (Claire Lautier) are the picture-perfect, up-scale Canadian family.  Professionals — dentist, doctor and liberal to the core.   They smack of smugness that would make even “limousine liberals” down here cringe.  Snobs, but they are oh so perfect.

They’ve even have a nanny for their daughter, Mali (Maya Ritter), an illegal Mexican alien by the name of Margarita (Nicola Correia Damude), but the daughter is now a teen, so when investments go south and their lifestyle begins to catch up with them (a microcosm of the overall economy) she is tossed to under the bus.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The moment she is gone the Lawson’s realize that she was actually a part of their family and have one of those “come-to-Jesus” moments where they suddenly realize that everything they took for granted was a facade of their own making.   Can they redeem themselves and make things right?   That’s the question!

With film festival wins at the Barcelona International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Créteil International Women's Film Festival and the Toronto Inside Out Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival, Wolfe Video has a indie hit on their hands here … and with that Oct. 29 DVD debut date they have plenty of time to bang the promotional drums.
