Icarus Films Sets The Domestic DVD Debut Of Lourdes For Sept. 28

Icarus Films will be teaming up with France’s premiere film production and distribution company, Distrib Films, on Sept. 28 for the domestic DVD debut of documentary filmmakers Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai’s Lourdes.   

This is an insightful and heartfelt look at the second most popular tourist destination in France after the City of Lights, Paris.   But more, it is also about about the people who make pilgrimages there in hope of miracles.

Hollywood has made movies about the events of 1858, where a teenage girl by the name of Bernadette had visions of the Virgin Mary.   Jennifer Jones won the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of the young woman and the events that took place in the Best Picture-nominated film, The Song of Bernadette.  

Between the folklore, the Catholic Church and the movie, Lourdes has gone from a small village to a prime destination, especially for those who are looking for miracles of their own.

The approach that Demaizière and Teurlai’ take in their documentary is that of following individuals on their pilgrimage to Lourdes.   These are either people that are very ill, or ones that have some special need, or the people helping them in their quest.   This makes for an intimate look at why so many make the trip to Lourdes as they seek out the water that flows there.  A place that has such special meaning.  

And, it is not random.   The filmmakers begin with the participants before they leave, which gives us a bit of background and makes what follows much more meaningful.  It is very touching … believe, not believe, you will be moved by the experience.

Lourdes is presented in French with English subtitles.

 

 

 

Bayview Entertainment Sets Poltergeist Diaries For Release On DVD This Coming Oct. 19

Bayview Entertainment has been working hard to find indie films that have been overlooked by the other home entertainment players.   The studios these days are way too busy with their steaming platforms to take notice and many of the independents are just trying to hold it together as the Covid pandemic never seems to end.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Bayview stunned the home entertainment package media marketplace with the announcement that they had acquired writer/director Claire Bryétt Andrew’s Max and Me for release on DVD, which will be arriving on Sept. 14.   It stars breakout talent Lily Bleu Andrew in her film debut.

This week, they are back with news of the under-the-radar acquisition of writer/director József Gallai’s alone-in-the-spooky woods horror tale, The Poltergeist Diaries.   The DVD debut date will be Oct. 19.

Filmed in Hungary, with an English-speaking cast, The Poltergeist Diaries is presented as something of a documentary, which makes it very effective as the narrative of what has happened — or what we “think” might have happened —unfolds in ominous, even unsettling, tones.

We learn right up front that Jacob Taylor (András Korchmáros — The Whispering Man) has gone missing.   His brother, Ben (Péter Inoka) and Jacob’s girlfriend, Kimberly (Kata Kuna) have joined forces with a documentary filmmaker (József Gallai) to help sort out the mystery.

We also have footage that Jacob shot, and we, as the viewer, are able to begin to put two and two together.   Jacob had a rough go of it after his mother passed, decided to take some personal time and found a real estate deal that was simply too good to pass up.  A much-undervalued house in the woods … Jacob begins picking away at clues he finds and soon he learns why it was such a deal.

Meanwhile, the “hunting” team records interviews and do their best to solve the mystery.   Which, because this is a creepy horror story, points to something very sinister about the house!!

For genre fans, and those who love a good mystery, The Poltergeist Diaries on DVD from Bayview Entertainment on Oct. 19, is a perfect found-film viewing opportunity during the Halloween promotional season.  

 

 

MVD Entertainment Group Bestows Marquee Collection Status On Director Stuart Grodon's Edmond On Nov. 09

MVD Entertainment Group has a new addition to its film-fan-pleasing Marquee Collection series with news this past week that director Stuart Gordon’s 2005 surreal thriller, Edmond, based on David Mamet’s 1982 stage play, and starring William H. Macy, will be arriving as a Blu-ray product offering on Nov. 9.

Edmond Burke lives and works in New York City, he’s bored, married, but lonely and more than a bit sexually frustrated, so one night, on his way home, he does something out of the ordinary and stops in at a tarot card reader’s business as a distraction.

The fortune teller (Frances Bay — Happy Gilmore, The Attic, Nomads) gives him a reading.  You know, all the usual rigamarole about this card and that, and then tells Edmond point blank that he is not where he belongs.   He already was predisposed to that and so this encounter confirms it … thus begins a great and tragic adventure on the streets of New York City.

During the course of the evening he is cheated, robbed, humiliated, beats a pimp senseless, has sex with Glenna (Julia Stiles — The Bourne Ultimatum, Mona Lisa Smiles, Silver Linings Playbook), a waitress he meets at a diner … and kills her. 

His misery for stopping by the tarot card reader that night is only just beginning!!

Bonus features include two commentary options, one with playwright David Mamet and the second with director Stuart Gordon (Dagon, Fortress, Re-Animator), producer Duffy Hecht and actor Lionel Mark Smith (as the pimp), deleted scenes the featurette titled “Anatomy of a Thriller.”
