Icarus Fims Selects Feb. 13 As The DVD Debut Date For Documentary Filmmaker Bobbi Jo Hart’s Rebels On Pointe

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
They will be touring the United States beginning Jan. 20 through Mar. 4.   Make note of those dates, because if after reading this news from Icarus Films, you just might want to catch one their live performances.

The announcement this past week from Icarus Films was that documentary filmmaker Bobbi Jo Hart’s Rebels on Pointe will be making its DVD debut on Feb. 13.   The film had a brief arthouse theatrical break in mid-November (limited to just three screens), so a much-wider audience stands ready to enjoy this gem.

For the record, the ARR works out to 88 days.

Rebels on Pointe documents the rich history of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, an American ballet group that bills themselves as “The World’s Foremost All-Male Comic Ballet Company.”   Founded way, way back in 1974, the ballet artists of this company have fun with classical ballet — playing both the male and female parts — but as the New York Times review of Rebels on Pointe (by Jeannette Catsoulis) pointed out … “The performances are hilarious, but the dancing is no joke.  As Gia Kourlas, a dance critic for The New York Times, points out, it takes exceptionally strong technique to merge classical choreography and comedy.”

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The film itself details the group’s history, provides behind-the-scenes access to their work (and preparation), plus interviews with cast members and clips from the various presentations — just the trailer for the documentary can get you hooked; the film itself will make you a fan!

Bonus features on the DVD provided by Icarus Films include a whopping 145 minutes worth of bonus interviews and outtakes!

Also new from Icarus Films this week, and timed for release during the celebration of Black History Month is the DVD presentation of I Am Somebody: Three films by Madeline Anderson (Feb. 6).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe DVD release from Icarus includes three of Madeline Anderson’s short films … the heart of which is the 30-minute presentation of I Am Somebody.  Documentary filmmaker Madeline Anderson was in the right place at the right time when the events unfolded in the spring of 1969 at the South Carolina Medical College Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina.   Her film is like a time capsule view of what unfolded at time.

By any standard the black workers — mainly nurses and aides — were treated poorly.  Their wages were not only below those of whites performing similar duties, but a full 30 cents per hour below the Federal Minimum Wage ($1.30 at the time).    12 said enough and were immediately fired.   Their co-workers went out on strike to protest and the National Guard (with fixed bayonets) was called in … the unrest lasted for 100 days.   Dr. Ralph David Abernathy of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was there to help with the strike and Coretta Scott King spoke to the strikers during this period.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Eventually, the strike was resolved, wages raised and the 12 who were fired were rehired … the threat of $12 million in Federal Funds being withheld was a mighty hammer.

The other two films in this unique collection are Integration Report 1 (circa 1960) and A Tribute to Malcolm X (1967).   Icarus Films is including, as a bonus, the short film titled Celebrate Moe!

Paramount Home Media Picks Feb. 20 For The Home Entertainment Launch Of Writer/Director Sean Anders' Daddy's Home 2

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media wasted no time in the New Year with the announcement this past week that writer/director Sean Anders’ smash comedy sequel, Daddy’s Home 2, will be available as a three-SKU product offering on Feb. 20.

The ARR comes in at 102 days and ticket sales currently stand at a robust $102.3 million.  That’s outstanding for a sequel, especially when the major media critics panned it … but audiences howled and that, in the end, means that they had the last laugh!   With those numbers for a sequel, you can expect a re-match with these various dads (just a question as whether you can corral the actors).

As to SKU configuration for Daddy’s Home 2, Paramount will be delivery a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and a stand-alone DVD edition.
The casting of Mel Gibson as Mark Wahlberg’s father was inspired, equally so was that of John Lithgow as Will Ferrell’s eccentric dad.   Since director/writer Sean Anders and Mark Wahlberg served as executive producers, there’s a good chance that another go‘round for this winning combination could surface (if Wahlberg can work it into his busy schedule).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAs to bonus nuggets, which are exclusive to the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray SKUs, there are deleted, extended and alternate scenes, a gag reel and five featurettes — “Making a Sequel,” “Look Who’s Back,” “Co-Dads: Will & Mark,” “The New Dads in Town: Mel & John” and “Captain Sully.”

Also heading home on the same date, Feb. 20, is writer/director Michael Carney’s faith-based film adaptation of Ron Hall and Denver Moore’s best-selling biographical novel, Same Kind of Different as Me.   Blu-ray and DVD editions will be available.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The ARR is 123 days and domestic box office receipts came in at $6.4 million.

Based on a true story (and told in flashback), Greg Kinnear stars as a Texas-based international art dealer by the name of Ron Hall, who strikes up what proved to be a life-changing friendship with a homeless man named “Suicide” (aka: Denver Moore) played by Djimon Hounsou, while volunteering at a homeless shelter.    Renée Zellweger plays Hall’s wife, Deborah, who had a “vision” of Moore’s character and instructed her husband to befriend him.

As to bonus features, there is commentary from Ron Hall and filmmaker Michael Carney, who are joined by co-screenwriter Alexander Foard, plus there are deleted and extended scenes and a pair of featurettes — “Love is Patient, Love is Kind: The Making of Same Kind of Different as Me” and “Filming in Mississippi.”

Mill Creek Entertainment Preps Six-Film Kevin Bacon Promotion For Both DVD And Blu-ray Release On Mar. 6

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
You won’t have to play “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” to take advantage of Mill Creek Entertainment’s Mar. 6 Blu-ray and DVD priced-to-collect product promotion featuring Kevin Bacon.

Titled Kevin Bacon 6 Movie Collection, fans — and film fans in general — can snap up these double-disc Blu-ray and DVD presentations at very attractive pricing.   So what do they get … let’s get right to that!

Two of his best sci-fi thrillers are included here, director Joel Schumacher’s Flatliners, which teamed him with the likes of Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Oliver Platt and William Baldwin and director Paul Verhoeven’ Hollow Man, which saw Kevin as a crazed scientist stalking his fellow researchers, which included Elisabeth Shue and Josh Brolin.

Kevin Bacon gets to torment both Charlize Theron and Dakota Fanning in director Luis Mandoki’s 2002 kidnapping thriller, Trapped, and Meg Ryan is the object of Bacon’s obsessions in director Jane Campion’s 2003 thriller, In the Cut, which also features Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mark Ruffalo and Nick Damici.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Rounding out this six-film collection featuring Kevin Bacon are writer/director Atom Egoyan’s 2005 mystery-within-a-mystery tale, Where the Truth Lies, which co-stars Colin Firth and Alison Lohman, and lastly, director Christopher Guest’s 1989 romantic comedy, The Big Picture, where Kevin, as a film school graduate, learns about the shark-infested waters of Hollywood.

Also arriving on Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment on Mar. 6 is the Blu-ray debut of director Catherine Hardwicke’s 2005 award-winning bio-pic, Lords of Dogtown, starring Heath Ledger … this is the unrated, extended-cut not seen in theatres!    Bonus features include commentary, deleted scenes and much more!!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAnd, get this, the SRP is just $14.98 for Lords of Dogtown (and that’s before discounts at retail).

Also among the priced-to-collect Blu-ray product offerings from Mill Creek Entertainment on Mar. 3 are two double-features from the famed Hammer Films library — director Maniac, featuring Kerwin Mathews and Nadia Gray, is teamed with the 1965 horror-thriller, Die! Die! My Darling, which stars Stefanie Powers and Tallulah Bankhead (and yes that is Donald Sutherland in one of his very early film roles).  The other double feature on Blu-ray from the Hammer Films library is director Cyril Frankel’s 1960 film adaptation of the Roger Garis stage play, Never Take Candy from a Stranger, which is teamed with director Seth Holt’s 1961 horror-thriller, Scream of Fear!, featuring Susan Strasberg and Hammer Films icon, Christopher Lee.

Rounding out the Blu-ray selections on Mar. 6 are both Blu-ray and DVD editions of the documentary feature debut of Legend of the American Sniper (which includes Digital Copy).   This is an insightful look at what it takes be an elite sniper for American ground forces in combat.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
On the DVD front, Mill Creek Entertainment has two for the young ones with the release of Baby First: ABC Galaxy of Learning and Baby First: Color Crew New Adventures — over two hours of fun and learning comes with both of these priced-to-own DVD product offerings (the SRP is just $9.98 each).

On the TV front, Mar. 6 brings collectors the Robert Altman anthology six-part mini-series, Gun, and the six-disc set of Crossbow: The Complete Series, starring Will Lyman as the legendary William Tell.

Arrow Video Preps Blu-ray Edition Of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ 1967 Horror Gem: The Gruesome Twosome

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The tale of the “kindly” Mrs. Pringle (Elizabeth Davis), landlord and proprietor of the Little Wig Shop (a home-based business), is the subject of horror icon Herschell Gordon Lewis’ 1967 horror gem, The Gruesome Twosome, which will be a getting a hi-def spin on Blu-ray from Arrow Video — MVD Entertainment Group provides the domestic sales and distribution expertise — this coming Feb. 6.

You can put the pieces together.   Mrs. Pringle runs a wig shop that features real human hair.   Mrs. Pringle rents out a room to young women attending the local college.    Mrs. Pringle’s son, Rodney (Chris Martell — Scream Baby Scream, Flesh Feast), is nuts.   Girls are scalped and Mrs. Pringle’s business has a steady supply of new raw materials.

Don’t you just love it when it all just fits together!   The “Godfather of Gore” nailed this one, right down to talking mannequin heads and a stuffed bobcat (or whatever it is) named Napoleon.   It’s a gore-fest of the first order featuring young women being scalped, decapitated and gutted — the innards of beautiful corpses can be a delight to play with, just ask Rodney!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAs to bonus features, we have an introduction to the film by the late Herschell Gordon Lewis, a vintage commentary track featuring the filmmaker and a trio of featurettes — “Peaches Christ Flips Her Wig!,” “It Came from Florida” and “HG Lewis vs. the Censors.”

And, as an extra special bonus, Arrow Video is including Herschell Gordon Lewis’ 1967 film release of A Taste of Blood, starring Bill Rogers (Flesh Feast) as a newly minted vampire (the result of drinking brandy sent to him by a distant relative).

Indican Pictures Selects Feb. 20 For The DVD Debut Of Writer/Director Angelo Lopes' Post- Apocalyptic Thriller Wastelander

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Circle Feb. 20 on your DVDs-to-see calendar as word arrived this past week that Indican Pictures has tagged that date for the DVD debut of writer/director Angelo Lopes’ post- apocalyptic thriller, Wastelander.

A limited threatrical run of Wastlander is planned just prior to DVD launch, which promises to be the first installment in a trilogy.

Rhyous Solidor (Brendan Guy Murphy), a former soldier, is a wanderer in the wasteland, only vaguely remembering bits and pieces of his past … visions of “Eden” haunt him.   One day he happens upon an odd assortment of fellow survivors, whose leader is only sustained by his “cryo” suit, but who does confirm that such a place exists.

In a clever mix of Mad Max meets Prince Arthur, our “knightly” hero embarks upon his quest to find this lost “Eden” with a motely group that includes the resourceful “mechanic” Neve (played by the alluring Carol Cardenas — Zero Point Theory, The Z, etc.) and the screw-loose Solek (Jon Proudstar — Jackrabbit Sky, Legend of the Phantom Rider).   The only thing that binds them together is their collective fear of The Scourge, a band of ruthless killers who roam the wasteland doing as they please and taking what they want.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Oddly, The Scourge actually fear the presence of “Eden” and that makes it all the more imperative that Rhyous and his group succeed in their quest.

Also on the way from Indican Pictures is writer/director Norman Gregory McGuire surreal “road trip” story, The Lucky Man, starring Jesse James (As Good as it Gets, The Butterfly Effect, The Amityville Horror, etc.) as a con artist preacher named Reverend Johnny Jones, who discovers that he actually does have the “power.”

The street date for the DVD release is Jan. 23.   The film had a brief theatrical showcase run in December, which yields an ARR of 32 days.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyHis scam is to move from small town to small town with his tag-along girlfriend, Rebecca (Mariana Paola Vicente — Self/Less, Nocturna), preaching to the locals — he’s actually pretty good at it — to get enough money for the next motel, the next round of drugs and enough booze to make him forget what a lowlife grifter he is.   When a pair of young thugs decide one evening that he’s an easy mark things happen … unexpected things, that is, as Johnny is able to revive one of his attackers from the dead (the results of a stray bullet).

Rebecca listens to his tale, but thinks it’s the drugs or booze talking.   It happens again, this time he causes harm to an old man by accident and then makes it right.  She’s now a believer!

The power to heal … it proves to be both a blessing and a curse as events unfold and the sins of the past have a strange and ironic way of overtaking this newfound “healer” and his faithful companion.

The Lucky Man is a strange, strange roadtrip … one that is worth taking coming Jan. 23 when it becomes available on DVD.
