Paramount Home Media's The Haunting Of Hill House Arrives As Blu-ray And DVD Sets On Oct. 15

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media has something special for the Halloween promotional season this year!!

Arriving on Oct. 15 are both Blu-ray and DVD collections of director/producer Mike Flanagan’s re-imagining of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 gothic horror novel, The Haunting of Hill House.

This ten-part series gives genre fans a full ten-nights of Halloween horrors on the run-up to October 31.   Or, if are so inclined, you can just binge-watch it … but what’s the fun in that?

In any case, filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Ouija: Origin of Evil … his film adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 novel, Doctor Sleep, opens theatrically on Nov. 6) expands the core haunting of the Hill House Mansion to follow the Crain family over a number of years as chronicled in Steven Crain’s autobiographic novel, “The Haunting of Hill House.”   Both Michiel Huisman (as Daario Naharis in Game of Thrones) and Paxton Singleton play the writer as both an adult and young boy.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
As we come to know the Crain family, Hugh (Henry Thomas and later Timothy Hutton) and his wife Olivia (Carla Gugino), have purchased the old place to renovate it, sell-it and use the profits to build a house of their own based on Olivia’s design.   The Crain’s have five kids, including the aforementioned Steven and his siblings — Shirley, Theodora, Luke, and Nell — and get to know them as both kids and adults, who are still troubled by their childhood experiences in the creepy old place.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAs to bonus chills, three of the episodes are extended and featured as “director’s cut” presentations, complete with optional commentary.

So successful was The Haunting of Hill House as an event series, that the concept has been renewed for a second season titled The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is based on Henry James’ 1898 Collier’s Weekly serial tale, “The Turn of the Screw.”

MVD Entertainment Group Bestows Rewind Collection Status On Writer/Director Damian Nieman’s Shade

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
MVD Entertainment Group’s popular Rewind Collection will be getting a new member on Dec. 17 with the Blu-ray debut of director Damian Nieman’s 2003 neo-noir thriller, Shade.

This is a hidden gem — and we’d love to know the full backstory — that fits right in the MVD Rewind Collection universe.   A complete filmmaking unknown by the name of Damian Nieman, not only wrote the film, but directed it … and managed to assemble a cast that includes Sylvester Stallone, Jamie Foxx, Gabriel Byrne, Melanie Griffith, Hal Holbrook and Thandie Newton.

Really?   Well, there’s a little more to it than some film school whiz kid making one film, with an all-star cast and then calling it quits.   He’s actually an accomplished magician — a regular at the famed Magic Castle, where he learned the ins-and-outs of the “magic world,” especially slight of hand with cards.

He studied the pros, he saw how cards could be manipulated for fun … and how cards could be manipulated in the world of cheating; “card play.”

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyHe wrote a script (he really did attend film school at Loyola Marymount University) and through various connections he got Merv Griffin to take an interest in his story — a story about grifters and hustlers and card cheats (mechanics).   Pretty soon Bo Hopkins was on board as a producer (his only foray into producing) … he also has a small role in the film.

It steamrolls and pretty soon Stallone is starring as Stevens, “The Dean” of the high-stakes poker hustle; the realm of underground gambling is his kingdom … and Gabriel Byrne comes on board as Miller, a small-timer who wants to move up the food chain.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The queen bee is Tiffany (played by Thandie Newton … as Maeve Millay in the Westworld cable series), who can size up the chumps.   Throw in a few more hustlers and card mechanics and you have all the makings of a neat little thriller where who-is-doing-what-to-whom is never that clear (hustlers hustling hustlers … if you get the drift).

The film actually opened the film festival circuit in April of 2003, bounced around the world and then got a very limited theatrical release in May of 2004 … and then Warner Bros. pushed it to DVD and that was it.

MVD Entertainment Group to the rescue with their Rewind Collection focus and now magician/director Damian Nieman’s Shade is ready for a whole new audience to discover on Blu-ray come Dec. 17.

As to bonus goodies, Nieman provides commentary and he is joined by actor Stuart Townsend (as Vernon … as Lestat in Queen of the Damned and Dorian Gray in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), there is also an extended video session with Nieman, Townsend, Stallone, Newton, Byrne, Foxx and Melanie Griffith.    Additionally, there are two featurettes — “The Making of Shade” and “Tricks of the Trade.”

Synergy Entertainment's Festival of Fright: A Treasury of Classic Horror Movie Trailers Head To DVD On Oct. 01

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Grab the beer, or “monster grog” if you like, and the pop corn because Synergy Entertainment has 39 classic reasons to celebrate on Oct. 1.   That’s the street for the DVD/CD Combo Pack presentation of Festival of Fright: A Treasury of Classic Horror Movie Trailers.

This treasure trove of classic horror theatrical trailers is the perfect ice breaker for an evening of genre thrills … the warm up, if you please.   Honestly, current theatrical trailers suck.   They are lazy, they grab a scene here or there, throw in some music from the soundtrack and cut, cut, cut as fast as a film editor can.

But back in the day, there were screen crawls, block narrative wipes, narration (the perfect voice to sell, sell, sell), ominous music cues … and none better were theatrical trailers for horror and sci-fi films of the 1940s, 50s and even into the 60s, and then, at some point, Hollywood got lazy.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeySynergy Entertainment, in conjunction with The Monster Club, has assembled 39 of these trailer greats for genre fans to savor, enjoy and yes, talk about; critique.   How can you not but beam with joy as the coming attraction for The Mole People flashes before your eyes?   Or Tarantula — as it rolls your mind drifts off to the musical lines from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “…I knew Leo G. Carroll was over a barrel when Tarantula took to the hills.”

Every trailer, a memory; hours sitting in the dark, pop corn at the ready and all primed to be scared, horrified and thrilled.   Oct. 1, there will be 39 reasons to celebrate … From Hell it Came, Black Sunday (a love affair begins with Barbara Steele) and The Unearthly.   Or, how about Vincent Price, the master of horror, on view in the likes of The Masque of the Red Death, House on Haunted Hill and The Tingler.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe bonus goodie included with this DVD release is a CD compilation of Halloween-themed party music … a little background to set the atmosphere as the night begins.  Recall that immortal line from Bela Lugosi in Dracula, “Listen to them.  Children of the night.   What music they make!” … and you know in your heart of hearts that any Halloween party needs that touch of properly-themed spooky, eerie, creepy music, complete with sounds from “children of the night.”    It’s here, Oct. 1 … trailers and music, the perfect combination.

Arrow Video Preps Writer/Director Billy Senese’s The Dead Center For DVD And Blu-ray Release On Oct. 22

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The Halloween season gets a slow-burn horror tale that would put a sinister smile on any crypt-keeper’s otherwise stoic puss.   Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise supplied by MVD Entertainment Group, has selected Oct. 22 as the street date for both DVD and Blu-ray editions of writer/director Billy Senese’s twisted horror tale, The Dead Center.

Senese arrived on the feature film scene in 2014 with Closer To God, his award-winning take on the Frankenstein legend as presented in terms of modern science.    With The Dead Center, he is back with another horror gem that is both claustrophobic in its setting and at the same time filled with dread … dread in terms of the inevitability of a fearful outcome that builds, and builds … and builds!

Unidentified, the toe-tag simply reads “John Doe” — he actually has a name, Michael Clark (played by Jeremy Childs — Closer to God, The Last Castle, After Darkness), but that isn’t important.   We are introduced to him on the slab of a morgue run by medical examiner Edward Graham (Bill Feehely — Blood Rogues, At the Edge) … he’s dead, dead, dead.

But in no time, Michael awakes and takes to walking the halls of the hospital, which leads him to an empty bed in the psych ward, where he settles in for a little nap — it’s been a rough day, being dead and all.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

He’s soon discovered by a nurse making her rounds — an “extra” nut job, that’s strange — who alerts Dr. Daniel Forrester (Shane Carruth — perhaps best known as a filmmaker in his own right … the award-winning Upstream Color), the head shrink, who takes the mysterious new arrival under his wing and tries his best to sort out how “John Doe” got there.

Meanwhile, Graham has begun an inquiry of his own.   Where did “John Doe” get off to … and who the heck is he!!   Unbeknownst to him, Forrester has begun interviewing the mysterious “John Doe,” only to hear a story from the now lucid “corpse” that gives him the chills.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
As events unfold, it becomes clear that the wandering stiff has some real issues that can’t be explained by the rational Forrester … and there in lies the path to his own hold on sanity.
Bonus goodies include commentary with filmmaker Billy Senese, producers Denis Deck and Jonathan Rogers and cinematographer Andy Duensing, plus there are nine deleted scenes, an alternate ending and a newly-prepared documentary on the making of The Dead Center which is titled “A Walk Through The Dead Center.”

Other bonus nuggets are on-set video sessions with actors Shane Carruth and Poorna Jagannathan, the featurette titled “Head-Casting with Jeremy Childs,” Billy Senese’s 2011 short film, The Suicide Tapes, and a half-dozen Midnight Radio Theatre radio plays written, produced and directed by Billy Senese — “Insomnia,” “The Long Weekend,” “Disposable Life,” “The Suicide Tapes,” “The Woman In The Basement” “Blood Oath” and “Flu.”

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Spider-Man: Far From Home Ready On Oct. 01

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
When retailers (we won’t say who, but they are usual suspects) and at least one distributor (Ingram) gang up on poor Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and say that director Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Far From Home will be heading home as a three-SKU product offering (plus “exclusives”) on Oct. 1, you would like to think that Sony would take some sort of punitive action about breaking the “announce date,” but they won’t (so it will continue).   Oct. 1 it is … despite no official press release.

The ARR for that date is just 88 days and domestic multiplex revenues currently stand at a tasty $379.8 million.

Despite the late August blow-up between Sony and Disney over future Marvel Comics Spider-Man adventures, when you pull in those kind of box office numbers you can fully expect yet a third (or more) film to be developed in the current series (Spider-Man: Far From Home is a sequel to 2017 release of Spider-Man: Homecoming).

As for consumer home entertainment packaged media selections, there will be a stand-alone DVD edition, plus Combo Pack options for both the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats.

Bonus features, which appear to be limited to the Combo Pack SKUs, include deleted scenes, a blooper reel, at least four featurettes — “Far, Far, Far From Home,” “Suit Up,” “Fury & Hill” and “Thank You, Mrs. Parker” — plus the short film titled “Peter’s To-Do List.”
