Paramount Home Media Picks Apr. 24 As The Street Date For The 40th Anniversary Home Entertainment Celebration Of Grease

Oh my gosh, has it been that long?  Forty years, really?  

Back in the 1970s, my lovely bride and I ran a little chain of theatres in San Diego and Orange counties.   We launched midnight showings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show in our arthouses — the Stand in Ocean Beach, the Wilshire in Fullerton and the Balboa Cinema in Newport Beach — plus we had “first run” theatres in Escondido, which weren’t really first run theatres when we started.

It went like this, Oceanside, which is 17 miles away, claimed clearance over Escondido, so everything that played here in Escondido was always a few weeks (to months) after Oceanside had their way it.   Paramount, United Artists and Columbia Pictures were the first to actually take a look at the map and say enough with that, and gave us first run clearance (“day-and-date”), with the provision that we, The Plaza Twin and The Bijou (aka: The Ritz) — our three screens — and The Vineyard Twin (the “competition”), play all of their films.   No problem.  Eventually 20^th Century-Fox, Warner Bros. and Universal followed, but Disney held out for another couple of years.

In any case, one of the first big blockbusters that we had a chance to play date-and-date was One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest during the Thanksgiving/Christmas season of 1975 … by June of 1978 we were doing better numbers than Oceanside across the board and we absolutely blew them away when we opened Grease in The Ritz (it had close to 800 seats) 40 years ago … sell out, sell out, sell out!!! 

News arrived this past week that Paramount Home Media will be celebrating the 40^th Anniversary of director Randal Kleiser’s theatrical debut of Grease — starring John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John and Stockard Channing (and the rest of the T-Birds and Pink Ladies) — with a new 4K restoration from the original negative on Apr. 24 with the release of DVD, Blu-ray/DVD DigiBook Combo Pack and 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack editions.

The Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD SKUs come with all sorts of bonus goodies, which includes the vintage commentary by director Randal Kleiser and choreographer Patricia Birch, the “Rydell Sing-Along” feature and all of our favorite behind the scenes and supporting featurettes (from previous editions … remember the one with the little leather jacket, that was cool).  

 

Plus, there are new featurettes included with this 40^th Anniversary promotion and an alternate ending (can’t wait for that).   Grease is the word and Apr. 24 just can’t come soon enough!!!

Film Chest Targets Apr. 20 For The DVD Launch Of Writer/Director Dylan Reynolds' 4/20 Massacre

Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day is a must for perennial viewing come Feb. 2 each and every year, as is A Christmas Story every time Christmas Day rolls around, and now there just might be a new annual viewing entry on “Weed Day” — April 20 for those not in the know — each year!

Film Chest announced this past week that writer/director Dylan Reynolds’ 4/20 Massacre — the first slasher film devoted to the “Weed Day” holiday — will be making its DVD debut on Apr. 3 (just in time to light’em up).   

Five young women (genre fans will quickly recognize them as the “victim pool”) — Rachel (Justine Wachsberger — as Lauren in Insurgent and Divergent), Jessica (Jamie Bernadette — The Bunnyman Massacre, All Girls Weekend, etc.), Donna (Stacey Danger — The Amateur, Suburban Cowboy), Aubrey (Vanessa Rose Parker  — as Amber in Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance) and Michelle (Marissa Pistone — Raze, Cruel Will, etc.) — go off on a camping trip in the woods on the pretext of celebrating a birthday for one of their members (yeah, right).  

We quickly learn that camping in the woods is not their strength as they begin bickering over where they are — maps can be so confusing.   It’s at this moment that a stoner dude stubbles upon them on the trail ranting about being hunted for “THE WEED” … he proceeds to surrender a satchel full of the stuff to the sweet young things (aka: victim pool) and runs off into the woods, free of his burden (later to be hunted down by his “hunter” and hacked to death).

WOW.  Apr. 20 — “Weed Day” — five young women in the woods, celebrating the “holiday” with enough grass to maintain a camping trip HIGH for, oh say, the foreseeable future (in a slasher flick that can be pretty short).   It is wonderful; it is marvelous … sweet!   

The title, 4/20 Massacre, pretty much says it all, so pick your favorite camper and hope that they are the last one standing (crawling) … it could be a fun group viewing game.   

Bonus features include commentary from filmmaker Dylan Reynolds (Chain Link, Nipples and Palm Trees) and video sessions with various members of the cast and crew.

Vinegar Syndrome Sets Its Blu-ray And DVD Release Calendar For The Month Of March

Vinegar Syndrome announced this past week that its next round of film restorations for delivery as DVD and Blu-ray product offerings will take place on Mar. 27.

Leading the pack is writer/director Alexander Cassini’s debut effort, Star Time, which opened at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 1992 and then went into sort of a distribution limbo (a small black hole) before surfacing at the iconic Nuart Theatre in early 1993 for midnight showings.   

If you have one of the old VHS copies, you can keep it or can it, but you will certainly want Vinegar Syndrome’s Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack edition come Mar. 27.    It is a new 2K scan from the original camera negative, so that’s the one to keep going forward.

Star Time, for many, will not ring any bells, but this was (and remains) a film, even with its modest budget, way ahead of its time.   Consider how prophetic Paddy Chayefsky was with his Oscar-winning screenplay for Network in 1976, which correctly predicted that television news would become an entertainment vehicle.   

Cassini’s Star Time, looks at the loss of reality by becoming attached to media and when that “reality” is shattered, so too is the individual.  The story revolves around a twenty-something named Henry Pinkle (Michael St. Gerard — Hairspray, Great Balls of Fire!), who becomes unhinged when “The Robertson Family” television show is canceled and decides to kill himself.   

Substitute a television show (‘90s pre-internet) for Facebook “likes” or some other social media alternate reality and you are right there with Star Time and Henry Pinkle.   A voice, an embodied voice by the name of Sam Bones (played by John P. Ryan — Five Easy Pieces, It’s Alive, etc.), convinces Henry that killing himself is not the best solution and that if he were to become a serial killer he could be a television star himself.    Great idea, so he becomes the “Baby Mask” killer and goes around hacking up people with a hatchet that Sam Bones has given him.

But when it comes to killing a social worker by the name of Wendy (Maureen Teefy), whom Henry has confided in, he just can’t bring himself to do it.   So Sam Bones takes over and offers to whack poor Wendy … and that leads to the ultimate rooftop showdown between Henry and Sam!!!

Bonus features include commentary with writer/director Alexander Cassini, a short film by Cassini titled “The Great Performance,” and the featurette titled “Shooting Star Time.”

Also on the Mar. 27 release calendar from Vinegar Sydrome is the double feature Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack release featuring director Jamaa Fanaka’s Welcome Home Brother Charles (aka: Soul Vengeance) and Emma Mae.

These are two of Fanaka’s early films — prior to hitting it big with the Penitentiary films starring Leon Isaac Kennedy.   Both are new 2K scans from the original 35mm camera negatives and bonus features are limited to a featurette titled “The History of the L.A. Rebellion & Jamaa Fanaka” and a Q&A session from a 2017 revival screening of Emma Mae featuring the film’s star, Jerri Hayes.

Adult filmmaker Alex deRenzy’s 1986 film release of Babyface II, starring Lois Ayres, Kristara Barrington, Stacey Donovan and Taija Rae, gets a new 2K restoration (from the original 35mm camera negative) and will be available for fans to enjoy as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack.

On the DVD release front, director Gerald Graystone’s 1975 adult/arthouse film peculiarity, Confessions of a Teenage Peanut Butter Freak, teaming Zachary Youngblood (who also wrote the script) with newcomer — and future adult star — Constance Money (The Opening of Misty Beethoven, Mary! Mary!) sports a new 2K restoration from a combination of the best 16mm and 35mm source elements available.    

And, Vinegar Syndrome caps off the Mar. 27 home entertainment release selections with its latest addition to its popular “Peekarama” line of DVD adult viewing products with the double bill selection of adult filmmaker Art Ben’s Women at Play (with Paula Meadows) and Good Girls, Bad Girls (featuring Colleen Brennan, Sharon Mitchell and Taija Rae).
