Drop Dead Diva: The Complete Series On DVD Toplines Mill Creek Entertainment First Wave Of June 04 DVD And Blu-ray Priced-To-Own Product Offerings

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Sunday night at nine o’clock … the death hour for TV series, especially those relegated to down-the-dial cable channels.   Add to that a no-name star, whose previous on-screen credits included a bit part (“woman in park”) in What Women Want in 2000 and an appearance on a Law & Order: Trial by Jury episode five years later.

How is that combination a winner?   20th Century-Fox even passed on the proposed series after reading the script for the pilot episode.   But a funny thing — make that, a VERY funny thing — happened in mid-July of 2009 on the Lifetime Channel, a star was born and a comedy series that had been passed on found an audience and became a hit!

Of course, for fans in the know, the series that became a six-season sitcom wonder on the Lifetime Channel was Drop Dead Diva and the then unknown Brooke Elliott became a star.
Mill Creek Entertainment announced this past week that its first wave of June 2019 price-to-collect DVD and Blu-ray product offerings will be top-lined by the 12-disc DVD collection of Drop Dead Diva: The Complete Series.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe set-up for the success of the series, and the reason why fans will be lining up on June 4 to grab their keepsake collections of Drop Dead Diva: The Complete Series, is the show’s delightful play on the Heaven Can Wait theme.   Two people die, sadly, one of which is Deborah "Deb" Dobkins (Brooke D'Orsay), a shallow, but gorgeous model, who arrives at the gates of heaven and is told that by “Fred,” the gatekeeper (played by Ben Feldman — Mad Men, Silicon Valley) that she cannot pass because she is neither good nor bad, but something of a zero.

No problem, Deb just smacks the “return” button before Fred can stop her and is zapped into the body of the recently deceased second person, Jane Bingum, played by none other than Brooke Elliott.   Deb is horrified, Jane is not, repeat NOT, supermodel material, but she is a whip-smart attorney.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
To complicate things a little further, she — Deb that is, now in Jane’s body (with all of the smarts that comes with it) — discovers that her former fiancé, Grayson (Jackson Hurst — The Mist) is a colleague of Jane and is working at the same law firm.   Yikes!

Throw in the now “guardian angel” Fred — a punishment of sorts for letting someone mess with the order of things — who has been sent to earth to keep Deb/Jane from spilling the beans and you have all the makings of a comedy series with “staying” power.

Comedian Margaret Cho provides plenty of comedy relief as the secretary sidekick at the law firm and the show is packed with a load of guest stars.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyMark it down, June 4, all 78 episodes of Drop Dead Diva: The Complete Series on DVD!
Not done yet!   Mill Creek Entertainment has added four new Blu-ray releases to its popular priced-to-collect line of Retro VHS films on Blu-ray … this time from the 1990s!  All four films in this June 4 Retro VHS blitz are making their Blu-ray debuts and all four are priced at just $14.98 each (and that’s before discounts at retail).

So what’s in the mix?   For starters, how about director Hark Tsui’s 1997 action comedy, Double Team, which features Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman working together — and odd pair if there ever was one — to stop a ruthless killer by the name of Stavros (played by Mickey Rourke).

Joining Double Team in the Blu-ray Retro VHS packaging hit parade are Excess Baggage (1997, teaming Alicia Silverstone with Benicio Del Toro and Christopher Walken), Jury Duty (1995, Pauly Shore, Tia Carrere and Stanley Tucci in the jury trial that never ends) and Dana Carvey leads the good life — in someone else’s home — in the 1990 comedy, Opportunity Knocks.

Paramount Home Media Tabs May 7 For DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Releases Of Director Adam Shankman's What Men Want

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media announced this past week that director Adam Shankman’s What Men Want will be making its home entertainment packaged media debut on May 7 as both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack product offerings.

The ARR is a swift-to-market 88 days and domestic box office receipts were a solid $54.1 million.

In a flip on the Mel Gibson hit comedy, What Women Want, Taraji P. Henson (Empire’s Cookie Lyon) stars as Ali Davis, a sports agent who is constantly knocked out of the big sports deals because she is woman.   When she get the power to hear the thoughts of her rivals and potential male clients, everything changes … she’s a winner, winner, winner!

Not just in the competitive world of being an agent for high-profile professional athletes, but in other “endeavors” as well!!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyBonus features, which are exclusive to the Blu-ray SKU, are top-lined by commentary from director Adam Shankman (Rock of Ages, Hairspray, A Walk to Remember, The Wedding Planner), who also provides an introduction to deleted and extended scenes.

Other bonus nuggets include a gag reel and half-dozen featurettes — “The Dream Team,” “Flipping the Narrative,” “What DO Men Want?,” “Poker Night,” “Ali + Athletes” and “Sister Spills the Tea infomercial.”

In other release news from Paramount Home Media this past week, the Amazon Prime cable series, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Season One, will be available as a double-disc Blu-ray edition on June 4.

All eight episodes from the first season (already renewed for season two) are included here … bonus features include a quartet of deleted scenes.

MVD Entertainment Group Sets July 11 For The Marquee Collection Release On DVD And Blu-ray Of Writer/Director Neil Burger’s The Illusionist

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
MVD Entertainment Group will be bringing both DVD and Blu-ray editions of writer/director Neil Burger’s turn-of-the-century (Victorian era, that is) romantic mystery, The Illusionist, to the home entertainment marketplace as a newly-minted Marquee Collection product offering on June 11.

Austro-Hungarian Empire politics in Vienna during 1889 serve as the backdrop for a forbidden love affair featuring the son of a cabinet maker-turned-magician, Eisenheim (Edward Norton) and Sophie (Jessica Biel), the would-be bride of a vicious prince (played by Rufus Sewell).

The story of the affair involving the aforementioned magician and the young Duchess (Biel) is told in flashback by Vienna’s Chief Inspector Walter Uhl (Paul Giamatti) to the Emperor as he tries to explain her murder and how it involves the Emperor’s son, Prince Leopold (Sewell).   There’s a peasant magician involved as well, who has developed a magic act with illusions of the dead woman that cannot be explained.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
This Illusionist is a clever mystery, with twists and turns and packed with plenty of magician directed tricks — the art of misdirection — that baffles both Chief Inspector Uhl and the audience in equal measure.   Remember, with “magic tricks” nothing is as it seems!!
Bonus features include commentary from filmmaker Neil Burger (The Upside, Divergent, Limitless) and a pair of featurettes — “The Making of the Illusionist” and “Jessica Biel on the Illusionist.”

Icarus Films Teams With The KimStim Collection For The May 28 DVD Debut Of Director Christian Frei’s Genesis 2.0

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Icarus Films will be teaming with The KimStim Collection on May 28 for the domestic DVD debut of documentary filmmaker Christian Frei’s Genesis 2.0.

Back in 1990, sci-fi writer Michael Crichton conjured up a bit of fiction that he titled “Jurassic Park,” which was brought to the screen three years later by Steven Spielberg.   Jurassic Park was a huge hit theatrically and it has spawned a whole film franchise that could go on forever.

Of course it is silly to imagine a bunch of scientists tapping into the DNA of an extinct species and bringing those creatures back to life.  But hell, it was (is) great fun to see Velociraptors and everyone’s favorite, the T-Rex, running loose once again.

But what if the fiction of Crichton’s “Jurassic Park” was the stuff that dreams are actually made of … and what if those dreams are the purview of geneticists who are actually working on bringing extinct species back from the grave?

Documentary filmmaker Christian Frei (Oscar-nominated for his 2001 film, War Photographer) teamed with adventure cinematographer Maxim Arbugaev to interweave two stories — a half-a-world apart — into one where sci-fi does indeed meet the world of science.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Frei works the circuit of researchers engaged in cloning and genetic research, while Arbugaev journeys to the remote New Siberian Islands, where access can only be had a few precious weeks each year — a place every bit as remote as the research station at the South Pole.

It is here that Arbugaev chronicles the search for Mammoth tucks in the frozen tundra — worth their weight in gold (in China) — and the discovery of an intact woolly mammoth, complete with frozen blood (the stuff of DNA).   So dangerous is the trip to this remote outpost that Arbugaev was able to capture on film a polar bear raid on their primitive encampment — a life and death struggle for outright survival again a trio of ravenous hunters, who know no fear of man.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The whole process of “weeding out” genetic material (disease cures) and the recreation of long-gone animals gives rise to all sorts of ethical issues, which are touched upon in Frei’s Genesis 2.0.   At what point does the fiction of Spielberg’s Jurassic Park film franchise meet the real world of genetic engineering?   Where is the line — these days — between science fiction and science reality?

Genesis 2.0 is presented in English, with some Russian (English subtitles when appropriate).
