Paramount Home Media Preps Blu-ray And DVD Editions Of Yellowstone: Season 3 For Release On Dec. 08

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Paramount Home Media announced this past week that Yellowstone: Season 3 will be available as both DVD (4 disc set) and Blu-ray (3 disc set) product offerings on Dec. 8.

What a fun series.   Kevin Costner leads the Dutton clan in this Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Wind River, Hell or High Water, Sicario: Day of the Soldado) written and produced series.  The first season established the storyline, set up the conflicts between the Dutton’s and those who rip apart their cattle ranch empire and just when it looked like Costner might exit the series … he was saved.

The second season is where things got really interesting as Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly — Eden Lake, Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Flight), Costner’s bright but rebellious daughter, got some terrific episodes that changed the direction of the series … made it much more intense.

And now, the complete third season … all ten episodes, with a cliffhanger that will have you eagerly awaiting the start of the fourth season (yes, it was renewed).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

As to bonus goodies, Paramount Home Media has four hours of material packed with DVD and Blu-ray collections, including a video session with Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan, director Stephen Kay takes fans on an “exploration of the series” and there is a view session with special effects supervisor Garry Elmendorf.

In other release news this past week from Paramount Home Media, Dec. 1 has been selected as the street date for a four-film promotion featuring Eddie Murphy.

There are two new Blu-ray entries in the studio’s popular Paramount Presents promotional line, Trading Places (a new 4K film restoration with deleted scenes and four featurettes — “Insider Trading: The Making of Trading Places,” “Dressing the Part,” “The Trade in Trading Places” and “Trading Stories”) and The Golden Child (also a new 4K film restoration).

The other two films featured in this Eddie Murphy promotion on Dec. 1 are 4K Ultra HD (each with Digital Copy).

The first of these is the 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack presentation of Murphy’s 1984 action hit, Beverly Hills Cop.  Bonus nuggets include commentary from director Martin Brest, deleted scenes, a trio of new featurettes — “Beverly Hills Cop: The Phenomenon Begins,” “A Glimpse Inside the Casting Process” and “The Music of Beverly Hills” — vintage featurettes and the “Beverly Hills Cop Mixtape ‘84” that allows the viewer to jump to songs featured in the film … “Nasty Girl,” “The Heat is On,” etc.

The last film in the promotion is 4K Ultra HD edition of director John Landis’ 1988 comedy hit, Coming to America.   Bonus features here include four featurettes — “Prince-ipal Photography: The Coming Together of America,” “Fit For Akeem: The Costumes of Coming to America,” “Character Building: The Many Faces of Rick Baker” and “Composing America: The Musical Talents of Nile Rodgers” — and a vintage video session with Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall.

Utopia Announces The Oct. 27 Blu-ray Debut Of Bill And Turner Ross' Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Utopia and OCN Distribution will be teaming up on Oct. 27 for the Blu-ray debut of a very unique film.   A “crafted” documentary titled Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets.

The corner bar, that place in the small, often dated strip mall, sharing the parking lot with a beauty shop, check cashing place, a small Thai restaurant and maybe even a neighborhood liquor store, is the subject of documentary filmmakers Bill and Turner Ross.

You drive by them all of the time, but unless you are a regular, you probably pay these watering holes no mind, but for those who do, they call these places home; it is where friends and “family” gather to commiserate.

Brothers Bill and Turner Ross make award-winning documentary films.  They once did one about the day in the life of a zip code, another one followed the three Zanders brothers around New Orleans one night, another was about their own adventures on a makeshift houseboat and yet another concerned the border towns of Eagle Pass, Texas and Piedras Negras, Mexico.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Sort of “slice-of-life” snapshots.   Cinema verité, if you will.   Their latest documentary, Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets, opened at Sundance in January of this year.   Remember when there was a time without Covid-19 and people attended film festivals … and drank with their friends at bars!!

The brothers freely admit that their film is a bit of a cheat and although it received a Grand Jury Prize nomination in the Documentary category at Sundance (losing out to Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss’ Boys State), it is actually a carefully crafted bit of fiction; a well-told story.

Sure, it feels like a documentary, the people are real, but the set-up is fiction, or should we say, fanciful.   If you loved This is Spinal Tap (a fiction), A Mighty Wind (a fiction) and Best in Show (also a fiction), then you have a pretty good idea where Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets … except the people are real, not actors.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

They wanted to do a film about neighborhood bars.   What was it about them that was universal?   What would be the perfect bar?   Is there like a check list?  But, more importantly, they wanted to capture the essence of why sharing drinks and conversations, in a public place, has such appeal … such loyalty.

The film is set up like this.   We are told that it is a bar called “The Roaring 20s” in Las Vegas, Nevada and that the regulars have gathered for the closing night of the bar … tomorrow, no more.

In fact, the interior is a bar in New Orleans and the brothers had access to it for two nights … 18 hours of filming.   They then recruited regulars of that bar and others in the New Orleans area and just let them be themselves while the brothers filmed them.

What emerges is a film that is like a stage play, characters come, go and we are treated to 90 minutes of what it is like to be a fly on the wall in a neighborhood bar.   Entertaining, fascinating, and, certainly, Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets is like no other “documentary” that you will ever see.

So, dive-in and enjoy the festivities on Oct. 27 as Utopia and OCN Distribution deliver the Blu-ray debut of Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets.   Bonus features include the featurette titled “After Hours,” security camera footage and a featurette about Las Vegas.

Icarus Films Prepares The Domestic DVD Debut Of Director Antoine Raimbault's Conviction For Release On Nov. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Icarus Films announced this past week that they will be teaming up with France’s premiere film production and distribution company, Distrib Films, on Nov. 17 for the domestic DVD debut of director Antoine Raimbault’s true-crime drama, Conviction.

What happened to Suzanne Viguier?   We do not know.   She vanished one day, everyone agrees on that.   Was she murdered — there was blood evidence to suggest that there was foul play.   Or did she just grow tired of being married and walk away?

Raimbault’s Conviction is based on Viguier’s disappearance in 2000 and the subsequent legal problems that her husband, Jacques (Laurent Lucas — Haut les Coeurs!, I Hate Love, etc.), faced.   Now, the procedural workings in such a case could be a bit dull and since this is not a documentary, Raimbault introduces a personnage fictive by the name of Nora (Marina Foïs — The Workshop, Faultless, Polisse, etc.), who becomes obsessed with the innocence of Jacques and moves heaven and earth to help prove his innocence.    Is she on a fool’s errand?

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

And what of Olivier Durandet (played by Philippe UchanMy Mother's Castle, Désiré, etc.), Suzanne Viguier’s lover … yes, Jacques was cheating on Suzanne and so she returned the favor.   All true.   Did Durandet have something to do with her disappearance?

Conviction, a mystery, a real whodunit with all of the courtroom trappings … and a wicked twist.   All plucked from a famous French woman’s disappearance and the subsequent murder trial of her husband.   To solve the mystery … Nov. 17 catch Conviction on DVD … in French with English subtitles.

AGFA Looks To Oct. 27 For The Blu-ray Debut Of Director Doug Ulrich's Scary Tales

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The American Genre Film Archive (aka: AGFA) will be teaming up with Bleeding Skull on Oct. 27 for the Blu-ray debut of director Doug Ulrich’s 1993 horror anthology, Scary Tales.

Newly remastered from the S-VHS original tapes (yes, a true independent), this shot-in-Baltimore production, the home of Edgar Allen Poe, of course, features three tales of terror (plus the wrap-around “Storyteller,” which hosted by Ulrich).

Owing much to the influence of the Amicus anthologies of the early 1970s (The House That Dripped Blood, Asylum, Tales from the Crypt, etc.), Scary Tales begins with the “Storyteller” telling the tale of “Satan’s Necklace” to a bunch of little kids (hello, where’s the parental supervision).   This necklace gives the wearer the power of Satan himself and eventually transforms the unlucky stiff into a human devouring monster … his wife (Ilene Zelechowski) hops in the bath and out comes her beating heart … which signals that Ulrich knows his target audience.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The next story the little tykes get to hear is “Sliced in Cold Blood,” a lurid tale about a cheating wife and the subsequent rampage that her husband embarks upon.   There is a “money shot” in this middle sequence that involves the belly of a fat guy (bar patron).  And, there’s also a young woman being raped (Karen Coker), which our boy stops to help, has second thoughts and kills her too.

And finally, the “Storyteller,” and the five little kids who are listening to these tales of madness — who by now are traumatized for life — learn the horrors of videogame playing that becomes obsessive in the segment titled “Level 21.”

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Yes, movie-making on a shoestring, but for genre fans that’s the whole point of it.   It scares the hell out of the traditional “Hollywood” studios, who spend more money on lunch the first day of a shoot then a gifted “amateur” devotes to the entire production.

As to bonus goodies, Scary Tales on Blu-ray from AGFA on Oct. 27 includes commentary from director Doug Ulrich, outtakes, a vintage local television appearance promoting the film, some early experimental short films from Ulrich and, as a super bonus, Doug Ulrich’s second feature film, Darkest Soul (1994), is also included here (and we think it might be its home entertainment debut) … a double-bill!!
