Mill Creek Entertainment Targets Feb. 19 For An Eight-Strong Mini-Series Blitz On DVD

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Mark it down right now.   Feb. 19, an eight-selection mini-series blitz from Mill Creek Entertainment … all priced at just $14.98 each and all eight DVD releases include companion Digital Copy!   It just doesn’t get any better than that for price and viewing content!

Where does one begin?   How about with director John Erman’s Scarlett, the 1994 mini-series event sequel to Gone With the Wind!    Timothy Dalton (as James Bond/007 in 1987 with The Living Daylights and back again in 1989 in License to Kill) stars as Rhett Butler with Joanne Whalley as Scarlett O’Hara.

The double-disc mini-series based on Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Western epic, Lonesome Dove, teaming Robert Duvall with Tommy Lee Jones, plus Danny Glover and Diane Lane, is also to be found among the Feb. 19 mini-series selections.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Looking for an event mini-series based on classic literature?   How about Homer’s tale of Odysseus (Armand Assante) and his amazing adventure in the Emmy-winning presentation of The Odyssey?   Or, perhaps the seductive nature of Egypt’s “Queen of the Nile” and her affairs with Julius Caesar and Marc Antony in director Franc Roddam’s Cleopatra is more to your liking … Leonor Varela is Cleopatra and Timothy Dalton and Billy Zane take up the roles of Caesar and Antony.

Adventures and drama on the high seas … is that what you have in mind?   Mill Creek Entertainment has you covered with director Franc Roddam’s 1998 adaption of Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick, starring Patrick Stewart as Captain Ahab, Henry Thomas as Ishmael and Gregory Peck (as Captain Ahab in the 1956 theatrical version) won the Golden Globe for his performance as Father Mapple.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAnd then there’s director Robert Lieberman’s 1996 tale of ocean-going tragedy, The Titanic, starring George C. Scott as Captain Smith, with the likes of Catherine Zeta-Jones, Peter Gallagher, Eva Marie Saint, Tim Curry and Marilu Henner (as Molly Brown) among the passengers on the ill-fated ship.

Rounding out the selections of Feb. 19 mini-series events (and remember, all are priced at just $14.98 each and include Digital Copy) are the double-disc presentation of The 10th Kingdom, starring Dianne Wiest as the Evil Queen, with Daniel Lapaine as Prince Wendell, who is trapped in New York City (in a parallel universe) where he meets Virginia (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) and her father Tony (John Larroquette), who help him get back to where he belongs (and he finds true love in the process) and director Lloyd Kramer’s mini-series adaptation of the Mitch Alborn book, Five People You Meet in Heaven, starring Jon Voight as Eddie … Ellen Burstyn and Jeff Daniels co-star.

Icarus Films Preps Director Christian Tod's Free Lunch Society And Iranian Filmmaker Vahid Jalilvand’s No Date, No Signature For DVD Release On Feb. 5

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Austrian documentary filmmaker Christian Tod, who was — by his own admission — heavily influenced by Captain Jean-Luc Picard and certain episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation back in the 1990s, asks the question, “What would you do if your income were taken care of?”

The result is the feature-length documentary titled Free Lunch Society, which will be making its domestic DVD debut courtesy of Icarus Films on Feb. 5.

How would it work?  Is it possible?   These are the questions (and more) that Tod explores with the likes of Götz Werner, self-made billionaire and the head of the Cross-Department Group for Entrepreneurial Studies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology; Fran Ulmer, educator, Director of the Institute of Economic and Social Research and former Lt. Governor of Alaska; Peter Barnes, journalist, author and environmentalist; Charles Murray, author of “Our Hands” and Libertarian Political Scientist; University of Manitoba professor Evelyn Forget; UC Berkeley professor Emmanuel Saez and more.

The film raises the issue, should the Calvinistic work ethic continue to be the backbone of modern society or can there be constructive alternatives?

Free Lunch Society is presented in a mix of English and German, with English subtitles where necessary.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Bonus features include the featuretted titled “The Free Lunch Society Talk Show” and several promotional videos.

Also announced this past week by Icarus Films is the Distrib Films presentation of director Vahid Jalilvand’s No Date, No Signature, the official Best Foreign Language entry by Iran for this year’s Academy Awards (nominations will be revealed on Jan. 22).

The domestic DVD debut date will also be on Feb. 5.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
No Date, No Signature had a very limited Oscar-qualifying theatrical release in early August of this year (limited to just three screens) and generated $33,877 in ticket sales … the ARR comes in at 186 days.

Class distinctions in current day Iran (filmed in and around Tehran) are explored in this intense dramatic tale — critic rave reviews and multiple award-winning film festivals results give credence to just how well-made this foreign-language entry is (including Best Director and Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival in 2017, losing-out to Nico, 1988 in the Best Film category).

In the opening sequence, Dr. Kaveh Nariman (Amir Aghaee — We're All Sinner, Mermaid, The Second Wife, etc.), a renowned Forensic Pathologist, collides with an over-loaded motorcycle on a dark street — father, mother, young boy and infant.   It appears to be a no-harm, no-foul incident and that’s that as they all go their separate ways.

Later, he crosses paths with the young boy again, this time as a dead body that is awaiting an autopsy.   This sets in motion a series of events that filmmaker Vahid Jalilvand uses to explore both class divisions, but long-standing customs and traditions that may seem alien to Western audiences.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Dr. Nariman’s colleague, Dr. Sayeh Behbahani (Hediyeh Tehrani — Red, Fireworks Wednesday, Israfil, etc.), performs the autopsy when he begs off and she discovers that the boy has died of food poisoning, which comes full circle to the father (played by Navid Mohammadzadeh) when Sayeh informs the parents.  He had bought cheap, rancid chicken and his wife immediately knew that something was amiss.

The father goes on a rampage against those who sold him the meat, while Dr. Nariman guilt-ridden over the boy’s death and eventually orders his body exhumed for a second autopsy.   Neither father, nor doctor can let “their” guilt go … it becomes all-consuming.

No Date, No Signature is presented in Farsi with English subtitles.

MVD Entertainment Group's Rewind Collection Status For The Blu-ray Launch On Feb. 26 Of Director Robert Radler's Showdown

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
MVD Entertainment Group announced this past week that the next Blu-ray entry under the company’s popular “MVD Rewind Collection” promotional label will be none other than Robert Radler’s 1993 martial arts thriller, Showdown.   The street date will be Feb. 26.

In an establish prologue we see a police officer by the name of Billy Grant (played by Tao Bo fitness guru Billy Blanks) answer some sort of domestic disturbance call which quickly escalates into an accidental death.   Guild-ridden over the death, Grant quits the force … but it is established in these opening sequences that he is a gifted martial arts practitioner (that will quickly become an important plot element).

We then shift to a high school senior named Ken (played by Kenn Scott — as Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, Shootfighter: Fight to the Death, Sworn to Justice, etc.) and his down-on-her-luck mother, who have just moved into town (filmed in and around Tucson, Arizona).    He arrives at his new school and immediately walks into a bad situation when he spots the lovely Julie (Christine Taylor — Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) and thinks that it would be a terrific idea to strike up a friendship.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Before you can say “kick-some-ass” he is confronted by Julie’s boyfriend, Tom (Ken McLeod) and his sidekick Rob (Michael Cavalieri) and roughed up.   Here’s where it comes full circle, the school’s janitor just happens to be Billy Grant and he befriends the overmatch kid … if he to survive his senior year (and get the girl) he needs to learn some defensive skills and Billy is just the man to be his mentor.

Meanwhile, just to close the circle even tighter, the brother of the man Billy accidently killing in the opening set-up, just happens have a karate school in town — he’s a nasty fighter, with all sorts of criminal associates — and Tom just so happens to be one of his students!!!

Showdown delivers exactly what it promises … plenty of action and the parallel storylines will come together in a massive no-holds-barred beat-down!   Plenty of action and, of course, a happy ending!

Bonus goodies are still a work in progress at this time.
