Masters of Sex: The Complete Series comes with commentary for the pilot episode featuring writer Michelle Ashford (Emmy nominee for her work on The Pacific mini-series, plus WGA nomination for Masters of Sex), executive producer Sarah Timberman (Elementary, Unforgettable, Justified, etc.) and actors Michael Sheen, Lizzy Caplan, Caitlin FitzGerald and Teddy Sears.

Other bonus features include deleted scenes (approximately 40 minutes worth) and a whopping eight featurettes — “Making Masters of Sex,” “A Masterful Portrayal: Michael Sheen as Dr. Masters,” “Ahead of Her Time: Lizzy Caplan as Virginia Johnson,” “The Real Masters: A Conversation with Thomas Maier,” “Surprising Facts About Sex: The Masters’ Great Discoveries,” “The History of Sex,” “The Women of Sex” and “The Men of Sex: Actors’ Roundtable.”

With that bit of housekeeping done, let’s return to the Sept. 11 DVD release of Born Free: The Complete Collection.   This super collection joins the previously announced Blu-ray selections for that same date — Benji: Off the Leash! (Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack) (with Digital Copy), Community: The Complete Series (a 12-disc set), Rescue Me: The Complete Series (a 16-disc collection) and the Blu-ray double features of Age of Consent and Cactus Flower … and Nightwing and Shadow of the Hawk.

The Born Free package includes the original 1966 film release of director James Hill’s film adaptation of the Joy Adamson book, Born Free, starring Virginia McKenna as the naturalist Adamson, with Bill Travers as her husband, George.  Born Free won two Oscars — Best Song (“Born Free”) and Best Original Music Score (John Barry — nominated six times for Best Music, Original Score … winning for Dances with Wolves, The Lion in Winter and Born Free).

Unearthed Films To Release DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Editions Of Writer/Director Stephen Biro's The Song Of Solomon On Aug. 14

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Unearthed Films, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has picked out Aug. 14 as the street date for writer/director/producer Stephen Biro’s latest installment in the American Guinea Pig horror series.

Titled The Song of Solomon, Unearthed Films will be releasing both DVD and Blu-ray editions, plus a special edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, which includes a CD of the film’s soundtrack.

The story itself is about a seemingly ordinary woman by the name of Mary, played by none other than “Scream Queen” Jessica Cameron (Camel Spiders, Resurrection, Intrusive Behavior, Run Like Hell, etc.), so you know — as a genre fan — from the get-go that this is going to be something special.

Cameron is a real pro, who is more than willing get into her part — wow, does she really know all of that Latin? — and that means in The Song of Solomon getting bloody … really bloody!!!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyFilmmaker Stephen Biro sets the hook early with a grab-you-by-the-throat opener and then settles in for a narrative set-up as Mary, at the behest of her mother, gets a little counseling from a well-meaning local professional, who quickly realizes that he’s in way over his head.
Mary’s issues devolve very quickly and before you know it she is in the middle of a series of exorcisms that all end quite badly.

Stop!   You’re thinking Exorcist rip-off right about now.   In the hands of a lesser filmmaker — and without the performance of Jessica Cameron — that assumption would certainly be the case.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
But, Biro came up with a script that almost wrote itself.   It was inspired!!  He turned, as the backstory goes, to the Catholic Church in his quest for knowledge about possession, exorcisms and the like.   They responded, again as the story goes, by sending him a copy of “De Exorcismis Et Supplicationibus Quibusdam” (aka: “Of Exorcisms and Certain Supplications”), which is in Latin.   It is literally an 84-page how-to manual, which became the basis for his script; his vision.

As to bonus nuggets, there are two commentary options.  The first features filmmaker Stephen Biro, who is joined by the very talented Jessica Cameron; the second teams Biro f/x whiz Marcus Koch (We are Still Here, Die Die Delta Pi, American Guinea Pig: Bouquet of Guts and Gore, etc.) and make-up artist Jerami Cruise (Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Revenge Is Her Middle Name, etc.), a behind-the scenes featurette and a trio of video sessions — actress Jessica Cameron, writer/director/producer Stephen Biro and f/x artist Marcus Koch.

Icarus Films Tabs Aug. 14 As The Domestic DVD Debut Date For Director Cédric Anger’sNext Time I’ll Aim For The Heart

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Icarus Films announced this past week that their next Distrib Films home entertainment release will be French filmmaker Cédric Anger’s award-winning true-life thriller, Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart.

Unless you were one of the very lucky theatre patrons back in April of 2016 to catch the two-cinema arthouse release of Anger’s story about the infamous French serial killer — with a twist — known by the name of Alain Lamare, this film is likely a mystery to you.   Icarus Films solves that mystery with the DVD debut of Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart on Aug. 14.

Back in the 1970s, Paris was the location of a mysterious killer, who boldly taunted one of his targets — a young woman who survived — with a note that chillingly concluded with the phrase, “next time I will aim for the heart …”

The terrifying aspect of Anger’s story — adapted from Yvan Stefanovitch’s novel, “Un Assassin Au-Dessus de Tout Soupçon” (roughly translated as “An Assassin Above All Suspicion”) — is that the killer is a French Constable. Renamed for the film as Franck Neuhart (Guillaume Canet — Tell No One, Hunting and Gathering, etc.), this police officer is usually the first one to arrive at the crime scene.   He is one sick puppy (with some really disturbing habits; rituals), who begins with assaults and soon works his way up to murder.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
As the police lay traps and work to catch “The Killer of the Oise,” they soon have one of those OMG moments … as Sherlock Holmes is famous for saying, “when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth,” and in this case everything points to the killer as being one of their own!!!

If you only catch one French-language film this year, make Next Time I’ll Aim For The Heart that film, especially if you are drawn to thrillers and mysteries.   Aug. 14, mark it on you viewing calendar now.

Next Time I’ll Aim For The Heart is presented in French with English subtitles.
Also on the way to DVD from Icarus Films is the Aug. 7 DVD debut of documentary filmmaker Wang Bing’s Bitter Money.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The City of Silk is what Huzhou is known as.   A city with a population equivalent to that of Chicago, it is just to the west of Shangai on Lake Tai, and roughly ten percent of the population of the city works in the garment industry … massive factories (read that as sweatshops) devoted to clothing, some 18,000 different companies in all.

Filmmaker Wang Bing introduces us to 15-year old Xiao Min and her cousin as they make the long train journey to Huzhou.   They are typical of the workforce that literally live — in tenement-like dormitories — where they work … young, rural and doomed to 12-hour days and little pay.

However, once the introduction to factory conditions are established, Bing takes us on several side journeys — almost as if they were dramatic tales all onto themselves.   Bitter Money becomes an exposé on life and working conditions in this bustling industrial city — the City of Silk — that is every bit as compelling as any dramatic work of fiction.

Bitter Money is presented in Mandarin with English subtitles.

Paramount Home Media Expands Its September DVD Release Calendar With PAW Patrol: Halloween Heroes, Scorpion: The Final Season ... And More!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media continued to expand its post-Labor Day line-up of DVD and Blu-ray selections with four new announcements this past week.   So let’s get right to it!!!

First up is the latest DVD collection of “tails” from the popular Nickelodeon PAW Patrol series.   Titled PAW Patrol: Halloween Heroes, Ryder and his K-9 friends star in seven “spooktacular” adventures (actually eight, as one is a double-length special).   The DVD launch is on Sept. 11.

Included in the mix are “Pups and the Ghost Pirate,” which features a mystery aboard Cap’n Turbot’s Halloween Ghost Ship that must solved before the Halloween costume party at the Lookout can get underway!

Bats!  Did someone say bats?   In “Pups Save a Bat,” playtime at the Lookout is put on hold when Ryder, Chase and Marshall have to rescue a baby bat that has fallen asleep underneath the bell at City Hall … it’s pandemonium, but with a happy ending!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Other adventures in this fun-filled mix include “Pups Save a Ghost,” “Pups and the Ghost Cabin,” “Pups Fall Festival,” “Pups Save the Corn Roast” and “Pups Save a Show.”

Also arriving on Sept. 11 from Nickelodeon is the stop-motion SpongeBob SquarePants Halloween special — Nickelodeon and Screen Novelties teamed for the production of this delight — titled SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeySpongeBob is none too sure about the Halloween festivities in Bikini Bottom as he is worried about being scared.   Soon the Flying Dutchman arrives and the scares are a plenty, but in the end SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy and the rest of the gang realize that a few good scares can be fun … it all concludes with a celebration at the Krusty Krab!

On the TV-on-DVD front, Paramount Home Media kicked off the post-Labor Day release onslaught last week with Sept. 4 street dates for both Bull: Season One and Hawaii Five-O: The Eighth Season (box six-disc sets).

This week the focus turns to Sept. 11 with the farewell to Walter O’Brien (World War Z, Interstellar, etc.) and his “gifted” band of asocial misfits with the release of Scorpion: The Final Season.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
All 22 fourth season episodes are included in the six-disc DVD set.   The tension is building within the Scorpion group, with a season finale (series farewell) that will bring it all to a head!

The following week, Sept. 18, Paramount Home Media has the next installment in the hit CBS series Madam Secretary, starring Téa Leoni as Secretary of State McCord.   Madam Secretary: Season Four features all 22 episodes as a six-disc DVD collection.

Bonus features include deleted and extended scenes … in mid-April, CBS announced that Madam Secretary will be returning for a fifth season (which should begin airing in early October).
