MVD Entertainment Group Selects Aug. 11 For The DVD And Blu-ray Debut Of Max Reload And The Nether Blasters

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
MVD Entertainment Group has landed the domestic distribution rights to the directing team of Scott Conditt and Jeremy Tremp’s action fantasy, Max Reload and the Nether Blasters, however the initial plans for a theatrical launch have been set aside (Covid-19 and all) in favor of a Blu-ray and DVD launch on Aug. 11.

Slick, well-produced and featuring cult icon Kevin Smith (aka: “Silent Bob”), Max Reload and the Nether Blasters is a gamer’s fantasy/thriller starring newcomer Tom Plumley as Max Jenkins, the nebbish video game store clerk at Fallout Games — a place where retro video games get a second life.

One day he discovers the thought-to-be-lost game cartridge of “Nether Game,” a legendary role-playing game that only runs on the old Colecovision gaming platform.  It’s like finding the Holy Grail of games, what could possibly go wrong?

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Plenty!!   Not only is this a game that only existed, he thinks, in the world of rumors, but it seems that this particular cartridge is infected with the “Curse of the Ages.”   When the unwitting Max plugs it in and starts to play he frees “The Nether,” a beastly, and very deadly, force from beyond.

The all-knowing wizard of game-playing, Eugene Wylder (Greg Grunberg — Star Trek Beyond, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens … as Matt Parkman on the Heroes television series), guides Max and his friends as they must battle and defeat “The Nether” … or the world is doomed.   No pressure!!
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

This retro-game thriller, which gamers especially will enjoy for the visuals and “gaming experience,” comes loaded with no less than five production featurettes — “Art and Animation,” “NetherCragon,” “Egypt,” “Reggie Gets Nethered – Anatomy of a Scene” and “Speed Run.”

Paramount Home Media Tabs July 21 For The Blu-ray Release Of Ghost: 30th Anniversary Edition

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
And just like that Paramount Home Media Distribution was back with news this past week that yet another key title in the studio’s extensive film library would be getting a new 4K film restoration, supervised by none other than the filmmaker himself.

The latest Blu-ray release added to the release schedule on July 21 is director Jerry Zucker’s Ghost, which will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary.

It was inconceivable that the co-director of Airplane!, who was also the writer and producer of The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, would be given access to a script by Bruce Joel Rubin that was at Paramount at the time.   But, history records that Zucker read the script, met with Rubin … and the rest was history.

Not only would Ghost be nominated for Best Picture, but Rubin would win the Oscar for his script (although Zucker worked on various drafts with him, layering in various elements of humor, he took no writing credit) and Whoopi Goldberg as “psychic” Oda Mae Brown won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar (she had previously been nominated for The Color Purple).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Demi Moore almost didn’t get the part as Molly as Nicole Kidman, who was to co-star in Paramount’s Days of Thunder, had gotten wind of the script and worked hard to land the role.

The film had a modest budget, but became the biggest theatrical hit of 1990 … even out-grossing Paramount’s other blockbuster of the year, Pretty Woman.

Bonus features for the Blu-ray release of Ghost: 30th Anniversary Edition on July 7 includes a vintage commentary track featuring director Jerry Zucker and writer Bruce Joel Rubin, plus a newly-prepared featurette titled “Director Jerry Zucker on Ghost” and a pair of vintage featurettes — “Alchemy of a Love Scene” and “Ghost Stories: The Making of a Classic.”

Mill Creek Entertainment's Three-Disc DVD Collection Of The British Invision Ready For Fans On Aug. 11

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Mill Creek Entertainment marks rock ‘n’ roll history on Aug. 11 with the three-disc DVD release of The British Invasion, a five-documentary collection showcasing the talents of The Beatles, The Who and The Rolling Stones ... priced to own and complete Digital Copy.
So what is included here?

We begin with the documentary team of Eduardo Eguia Dibildox and Brian Huckeba’s 2003 film, The Beatles: A Long and Winding Road, which breaks down the history of the “Lads from Liverpool” into five unique time periods.

The first chapter, 1940 through 1958, focuses on the early lives of John, Paul, George and Ringo.

The next period, 1958 – 1960, looks at the formation of the group, their early “gigs” and how The Beatles finally came together.   This is followed by “Beatle Mania” (1960 – 1962) and then Dibildox and Huckeba get to the glory years of the “British Invasion” (1963 – 1966) and the last segment recaps what has taken place since 1967.

No history of The Beatles would be complete without a look at the man who guided their early career, this is documented in the hour-long production from 2004, Brian Epstein: Inside the 5th Beatle.

A nice companion piece to the Brian Epstein biography is director Henry Stephens’ feature-length documentary Inside John Lennon, which examines his early life, his career with The Beatles, the break-up, his relationship with Yoko Ono to his tragic murder at the hands of Mark David Chapman.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe fourth documentary included in this unique collection from Mill Creek Entertainment on DVD is documentary filmmaker Ron DeMaraes’ The Who: The Vegas Job, which zeros-in on the Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Roger Daltry of The Who and their legendary 1999 concert at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.   Included in the set list that night were “Magic Bus,” “Pinball Wizard,” “I Can’t Explain” and more.

And last, but certainly not least is documentary filmmaker Steven Vosburgh’s five-part series, The Rolling Stones: Just For The Record.

Through intimate archived interviews with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones … and more, we are guided through “The Sixties,” “The Seventies,” “The Eighties,” “The Nineties” and “Two Thousand and Beyond.”

Arrow Video Tabs Aug. 18 For The Re-Introduction Of The Last House On The Left On Blu-ray

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
In the 1930s it was the monsters that Universal Pictures created that became legend — Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolf Man, etc.   In the 1940s, producer Val Lewton teamed with directors Jacques Tourneur, Mark Robson and Robert Wise to make a series of “atmospheric” horror films — Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie, The Body Snatcher and more.

The 50s and into the 1960s theatre-goers got sci-fi thrillers, Vincent Price and Hammer Horror … and then in 1968 a horror masterpiece was created on a limited budget, director George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead.

The terror notch had been up a mark or two on the dial … and young filmmakers took notice.   Among these was newcomer Wes Craven, a college instructor who wrote, directed, co-produced and edited his first film in 1972 and it became a touchstone for horror films that followed.

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will release the “Uncut” version of the iconic, The Last House on the Left, as a stand-alone Blu-ray edition on Aug. 18.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Arrow Video had previously issued a limited edition, double-disc Blu-ray featuring the “Uncut” presentation as well as the “Krug & Company” cut of the film.   It is now out of print.

This re-release Blu-ray presentation features not one, but three commentary options. There is one with Wes Craven and producer Sean S. Cunningham, a second featuring actors David Hess, Marc Sheffler and Fred Lincoln … and a third with Bill Ackerman and Amada Reyes.

The vintage introduction by Craven is included here, a deleted scene, extended outtakes, plus there are seven featurettes — “Still Standing: The Legacy of The Last House on The Left,” “Celluloid Crime of the Century,” “Scoring Last House,” “It’s Only a Movie: The Making of Last House on the Left,” “Junior’s Story,” “Blood and Guts” and “The Road Leads to Terror.”

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment To Release Director David S. Ward's Cannery Row On Blu-ray This Coming June 09

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced a flurry of new Blu-ray product offerings that will be available for film fans to enjoy during the month of June.

Key among these is the new 4K film restoration — from the original camera negative — of director David S. Ward’s 1982 film adaptation of John Steinbeck's novels, “Cannery Row” (1945) and its sequel “Sweet Thursday,” (1954), which was condensed into simply Cannery Row for its theatrical release.

Cannery Row will be available for the first time on Blu-ray on June 9.

What a complicated history this Depression-era story had getting to the screen.  Soon after Steinbeck published “Cannery Row” in 1945 he sold the screen rights, but by 1949 the production never got off the ground and the rights reverted to him.   30 years would pass before the idea of a film adaptation would rematerialize (John Steinbeck himself long since dead).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The central character of Doc (aka: Eddie “the Blur” Daniels) was rumored to be Paul Newman, and then Jack Nicholson, but it finally went to Nick Nolte, who, as the industry trades of the time reported, really got into the role, studying with an actual marine biologist and working out with the California Angels.

The role of Suzy DeSoto, waitress at the Golden Poppy (among other things), had so many rumored actresses up for the part that it looked like a roster of who was who in Hollywood at the time — Olivia Newton-John (Grease in 1978 put her in the running), Liza Minelli, Bo Derek (10 in 1979 put her in the limelight) and even Julie Christie (Heaven Can Wait in 1978) were all in the running at one point or another.

They finally decided on Raquel Welch.   Filming got underway in mid-December of 1980 and just one week into the production … Raquel Welch was fired!!   Enter Debra Winger, who had read for the part six months earlier, but was rejected … and then a little film opened at the beginning of the summer of 1980 that made her a star, Urban Cowboy.   So Debra Winger is the new Suzy!!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe film finally opened during the Valentine’s Day period of 1982 … and now, for the first time, it will be available on Blu-ray on June 9.

Also added to the June Blu-ray release calendar from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment … June 16 is the street date for Romance on the High Seas, while three Blu-ray product offerings will follow on June 23, House of Wax 3D, Pennyworth: The Complete First Season (3 disc set) and Strike Up the Band.
