MVD Entertainment Group Tabs Oct. 9 For The Blu-ray Release Of Director Terry Zwigoff’s Art School Confidential

Back in 2006, Sony Pictures Classics took director Terry Zwigoff’s Art School Confidential out theatrically as an arthouse film entry.   It was a limited run, which quickly evaporated and that was that for Art School Confidential and the filmmaker who brought us the Oscar-nominated Ghost World (Best Adapted Screenplay), the hit-comedy Bad Santa and the wildly original Crumb documentary.

In retrospect the studio couldn’t quite figure out what they had.   Arthouse entry?  Black comedy?   Or, something else?   

It’s no problem for MVD Entertainment Group as Zwigoff’s film oddity fits perfectly into the company’s successful Marquee Collection promotional Blu-ray line of products.   Marquee Collection indeed on Oct. 9!

Jerome (Max Minghella — as Nick in The Handmaid's Tale cable series, plus such films as The Internship, The Social Network, The Ides of March, etc.) is a technically proficient artist who lacks a formal education.   So he enrolls at Strathmore to get the education and the validation.

It is a place of eccentrics, including a professor (John Malkovich) who hasn’t moved beyond his “triangle” period, an art history teacher (Anjelica Huston) with an odd perspective on dead white artists and a failed artist by the name of Jimmy (Jim Broadbent) who knows art, but loves the bottle.   

His friends include the outcast “Bardo” (Joel David Moore) and a roommate by the name of Vince (Ethan Suplee), who fancies himself a cutting edge filmmaker.  And then there’s Audrey (Sophia Myles — Underworld, Underworld: Evolution, Transformers: Age of Extinction, etc.), a model, who Jerome quickly becomes enamored with.

Oh yes, and there is one other whacky element at this art college, the Strathmore Strangler … a serial killer who prefers his victims to be subjects of Jimmy’s paintings.    

Jerome gets an education — he’s a quick study.   Being famous is about being famous (think: Kardashian), which is the point of Zwigoff’s film.   Our hero becomes a famous artist for something he didn’t do, but he is perfectly happy to claim credit for it.  He was all he wanted out of life, to be famous.

Vince, Jerome’s roommate, also becomes famous for making a documentary about the Strathmore Strangler.   Of course Vince got all of the details wrong, but he’s now a famous filmmaker, so details really don’t matter.   And, Jerome ends up with the girl of his dreams, even though circumstances prevent him from the enjoyments of that relationship.

Arthouse?   Black comedy … as they say, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!

Bonus goodies include a blooper reel, deleted scenes, the “Sundance Featurette” and the “Making of Art School Confidential” featurette.

Director Jeanne Herry’s Number One Fan On DVD On Oct. 2 From Icarus Films

The Distrib Films’ production of director Jeanne Herry’s Number One Fan will be making its domestic DVD debut on Oct. 2.   Icarus Films will be guiding the sales and distribution efforts.

Sandrine Kiberlain (eight César Awards nominations for acting, including wins for En Avoir (Ou Pas) and 9-Month Stretch) is absolutely magnificent as Muriel Bayen, a divorced mother of two daughters who works as a beautician.   Well, she’s not magnificent for those attributes.  There are two other qualities about Muriel that separate her from “normal” people. 

First, she can’t engage in a conversation without spinning it into an elaborate story full of “artistic license.”   In other words, she’s a compulsive liar … a spinner of yarns.   And secondly, and perhaps more important for the story that unfolds, she is the number one fan of recording artist Vincent Lacroix (Laurent Lafitte — Elle, Tell No One, etc.).

She attends as many as his concerts and television events that she can, she lives on his web site and has all of his CDs.   She is a fan … a fanatic.   And guess what, Vincent has noticed her, which brings us to the fateful night that sends Herry’s story into full frantic motion.

Imagine that you are Muriel for a moment and the object of attention, Vincent, comes knock, knock, knocking at your front door.   He needs your help.   Wow, of course she is all in, even if it involves the disposal of his girlfriend’s body.

Vincent knows that Muriel is a super fan, but what he doesn’t know is that other little foible of hers … that story invention part.   Throw in a couple of romantically-involved police detectives, a dead body and Muriel being grilled for details and you can only imagine how difficult it would be for even the like of Alfred Hitchcock to keep up with all of the plot twists and turns … and Muriel inventions!

Number One Fan is part neo-noir thriller, part black comedy … and with Sandrine Kiberlain’s performance as Muriel, it is over-the-top engaging.   On DVD this coming Oct. 2, presented in French with English subtitles.

Arrow Video Selects Nov. 13 For The Three-Disc Blu-ray Collection De Niro And De Palma: The Early Films

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will be bringing the early film collaborations of Robert De Niro and Brian De Palma to market on Nov. 13.

All three films are new 2K restorations from the original film elements or negatives and will be presented as a three-disc Blu-ray box set.

Before Phantom of the Paradise, Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Scarface and Blow Out, Brian De Palma’s films were a staple of repertory cinema exhibitors in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s with the likes of Greetings, Hi, Mom! and The Wedding Party all making the rounds.

Call them “underground,” if you like.   Indie filmmaking; craft-learning experiments … they were film oddities that nevertheless found favor with the arthouse audiences of the time.   The one thing that all three of these De Palma films had in common was the presence of a then unknown actor by the name of Robert De Niro … other aspiring actors featured in these early works of De Palma included both Gerrit Graham and William Finley — who would go on to co-star in De Palma’s Phantom of the Paradise — Jennifer Salt (Sisters) and Jill Clayburgh.

Arrow Video, in addition to the new 2K restorations for each film, has assembled an impressive selection of bonus features, including a newly-prepared commentary on Greetings featuring author Glenn Kenny (“Robert De Niro: Anatomy of an Actor”), and a newly minted video session with Charles Hirsch, the screenwriter and producer of both Greetings and Hi, Mom!

And actors Gerrit Graham and Peter Maloney are featured in a new video sessions, plus critic Howard S. Berger discusses the film collaborations of Brian De Palma and Robert De Niro.
