In quick succession Paramount has announced upgrades to the 4K Ultra HD format for the entire Mission: Impossible series (June 26), Terminator Genisys (June 12) and Best Picture-winners, Braveheart and Gladiator on May 15.

MVD Entertainment Group's Popular "Rewind Collection" Gets A New Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Addition With The Release Of Lionheart On June 12

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
MVD Entertainment Group’s popular “Rewind Collection” gets a new Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack additon on June 12 with the hi-def release of director Sheldon Lettich’s 1991 super-charged crime thriller, Lionheart, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.

The equivalent of cockfighting, but substituting humans for the unlucky roosters, is what Cynthia Caldera (Deborah Rennard) — a wealthy New Yorker, with too much time on her hands — organizes for her upper crust friends.  It is into this combat circle that French Legionnaire Lyon Gaultier (Jean-Claude Van Damme) finds himself when he jumps ship in New York harbor — in a prologue we learn that his brother was a police informant who was outted by Los Angeles thugs and literally burned alive.   He is now in intensive care and Lyon is desperate to get out to the coast.

Scurrying through the streets of Manhattan he comes across a streetfight, complete with a crowd of wagering fanatics — big money is being bet on who can pound who into submission.   Short on cash, Lyon enters the competition and scores big!   He even gets a street-wise manager (and friend) in the process named Joshua (Harrison Page), who helps out in a very tight spot.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
That little performance catches the attention of Cynthia and it is all-in for her, she’s got to have Lyon in her stable of fighters.   She even gives him a new fighting moniker, Lionheart!
Not interested, Lyon and his new buddy, Joshua, head out to Los Angeles, but soon discover that his brother is dead and his widow, Helene (Lisa Pelikan) and her daughter (played by Ashley Johnson in her film debut, who has gone on to have quite the career as a “voice talent,” plus such TV series as Growing Pains, All-American Girl, Blindspot, etc.) are destitute.

No sooner can he say, “I’ll help out,” when up pops Cynthia and her “assistant,” Russell (Brian Thompson) … she simply can’t take no for an answer.   If that wasn’t enough to put the pressure on, the arrival of two Legionnaire skip-tracers intent on taking Lyon back to Djibouti puts the icing on the cake.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

All of this is, of course, the set-up.   Cynthia has in mind a high-stakes “death match” for Lionheart against the unbeatable Attila (Abdel Qissi), a streetfighter who has killed no less than eight of his opponents.

As any fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme knows, Attila-smila, Lionheart is going to mop the floor with him.   So director Sheldon Lettich and Van Damme himself, needed to come up with a little something that would make the outcome in doubt.   So they wrote in an altercation with the two blokes from the Foreign Legion who were on Lyon’s tail that left him bruised and bloodied … and with a cracked rib!

Cynthia’s “death match” will be a real fight-to-the-finish and Lionheart might not survive Attila’s beatdown.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Bonus goodies in this all-action thriller include commentary from director Sheldon Lettich (Double Impact, Only the Strong … and screenplays for Max, Rambo III, Bloodsport, Russkies, etc.), who is joined by actor Harrison Page (Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Carnosaur, etc. … and as Captain Trunk in the Sledge Hammer! sitcom), and two new video sessions, one with filmmaker Sheldon Lettich and the other featuring Harrison Page.

Plus, there is the newly-prepared documentary, The Story of Lionheart, two new production featurettes — “Inside Lionheart” and “Lionheart: Behind the Fights” — the vintage of “Making of Lionheart” featurette and a bonus featurette titled, “Behind the Scenes of the Audio Commentary.”

VCI Entertainment Restores Fred Williamson's "BOSS" For Blu-ray Release On Aug. 14

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
VCI Entertainment announced this past week that director Jack Arnold’s 1974/1975 Blaxploitation film, Boss Nigger, starring and written by Fred Williamson, will be available as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack product offering on Aug. 14.

A new 2K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative is the offing.

The title of the film, of course, is offensive and even during the height of the Blaxploitation wave it arrived it some theatrical venues as simply Boss or The Black Bound Hunter, with the “N” word nowhere to be found.

You have to put the film and its star, Fred Williamson, in the context of the Blaxploitation genre, which was kicked off by the arrival of director Melvin Van Peebles’ 1971 film, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (a new 4K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative will be released by Vinegar Syndrome as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack on May 29).
It was in full steam by the summer of 1972 when Fred Williamson and Bernie Casey announced that they would be producing and starring in a spin-off of the surprisingly successful March of 1972 film release of director Martin Goldman’s The Legend of Nigger Charley.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyA sequel, director Larry G. Spangler’s The Soul of Nigger Charley, arrived the following year and somewhere during the timeframe between the release of the two films Bernie Casey dropped out of the project, but Williamson continued in his efforts to produce his own installment in the series.

To complicate Williamson’s efforts to product Boss Nigger, his film career had taken off and he was in demand big time … Hammer, Black Caesar, Hell Up in Harlem and Three the Hard Way (and others) all arrived theatrically and those films took up space and time.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Finally, during the summer of 1974 he was able to put together the financing and brought Jack Arnold on board to direct — the two had just worked together on the Warner Bros. production of Black Eye, which was released theatrically in the spring of 1974.

Two years from start to finish and finally Boss Nigger went into production.  Williamson returned to the same filming locations for The Legend of Nigger Charley in New Mexico and D’Urville Martin reprised his role as Williamson’s sidekick.   Within a few months of the film being completed, Lawrence Woolner’s Dimension Pictures acquired domestic distribution rights (this is not the same Dimension that was founded by Bob Weinstein in the early ‘90s) and began to platform the release of the film on a regional basis … opening the film at Christmas of 1974 and “bicycling” prints around the country for an entire year!

As to bonus goodies, VCI Entertainment has three featurettes included with the Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack release — “A Conversation with Fred “The Hammer” Williamson,” “Jack Arnold Tribute” and  “A Boss Memory.”

Mill Creek Entertainment To Release A Nine Film Blu-ray Collection For Just $14.98 On June 5

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
This is not a misprint.   We even ask Mill Creek Entertainment if the pricing was correct … and they said, YES.

On June 5, consumers can create an instant Blu-ray library of nine action films for just (drum roll, please), $14.98.   Tippy-tap, tippy-tap, calculator working … WOW, that’s a $1.66 per Blu-ray film title.

This five-disc Blu-ray collection is titled Action 9 Movie Collection and it includes not one or two, but no less than five Jean-Claude Van Damme action thrillers, plus two from Fast & Furious alumni, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson.

So let’s crack it open and let’er rip …

Director Mic Rodgers’ 1999 sci-fi entry, Universal Soldier: The Return, starring Van Damme as Luc Deveraux (aka: GR44), the dead Vietnam vet, who was resurrected as a deadly cyborg in Universal Soldier … well, he’s back!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The implants have been removed and he is back among the living, but when the secret program he is working on — new Universal Soldiers, or simply, UniSols — is about to be shutdown, the master control computer, S.E.T.H (an acronym for Self-Evolving Thought Helix), will have none of it and turns the UniSols loose … who are a truly unstoppable force.   Oh wait, they haven’t met Jean-Claude Van Damme!

Between the first Universal Soldier film in 1992 and Universal Soldier: The Return in 1999, Van Damme starred in one hit after another.   Mill Creek Entertainment has two of those from period.   These are director Ringo Lam’s 1996 box office smash, Maximum Risk, which finds Van Damme assuming the role of his dead twin brother — a Russian mobster — to solve his murder (Natasha Henstridge co-stars as his dead brother’s fiancé) and director Tsui Hark’s 1997 buddy action/comedy, Double Team, who teams up with none other than Dennis Rodman to stop an international terrorist (Mickey Rourke) who has kidnapped Van Damme’s pregnant wife (Natacha Lindinger).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAlso in the mix are two direct-to-video action films starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Second in Command (2006), Van Damme must defend the American Embassy in Moldavia with just a handful of Marines against impossible odds, and The Hard Corps (also from 2006 and co-starring Vivica A. Fox), which finds Van Damme as a body guard to a former boxing champ (Raz Adoti), who is being hounded by the mob.

Five Jean-Claude Van Damme and we’re not done yet!!!

The Fast & Furious alumni kick in with Vehicle 19 (Paul Walker) and Gridiron Gang (Dwayne Johnson), plus Mill Creek Entertainment rounds out the nine-film collection with You Got Served and Stomp the Yard.
