Bayview Entertainment's Domestic DVD Debut Of Director Sang-hoon Ahn’s The Witness Will Take Place On Mar. 24

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Bayview Entertainment will be bringing director Sang-hoon Ahn’s Mandarin-language remake of his own film, The Witness, to the domestic home entertainment marketplace on Mar. 24.

His first version, Blind, was a South Korean hit in 2011.   Normally, when a foreign-language film is a surprise hit, it gets an English-language remake … some are successful — The Departed (Internal Affairs), The Birdcage (La Cage aux Folles), A Fistful of Dollars (Yojimbo) — some not so much.

It speaks volumes about the rise of the Chinese film industry in the past 20 years … a Mandarin-language remake of a detective thriller from a foreign country.   And by the same director, which is even more interesting.

The new version, The Witness, was released in 2015 and pulled in $33.5 million in China … it was also released in the United States about the same time and generated $418,063 in domestic ticket sales.   That is a very impressive number for a Mandarin-language film with English subtitles.

And what is in more interesting, it didn’t get a domestic DVD and/or Blu-ray release, despite being a huge theatrical hit … that is, until now!   For the record, the ARR works out to a whopping 1,607 days.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

In a prologue, we are introduced to a police trainee by the name Lu Xiaoxing (Mi Yang), who is involved in a deadly car accident that costs the life of her young brother and leaves her blind.

We rejoin her story three years later and she is still suffering from the effects of the accident (the mistakes she made that killed her brother haunt her).   As fate would have it, she is involved in yet another auto accident, only this time it is not her fault.

Something happens as a result of this car crash.   She “feels” that the driver, who took off, was in fact out to abduct her … she plays a hunch and contacts a former colleague on the force, Lu Li (Jingchun Wang) and shares her experience.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Bingo!   He is investigating a series of abductions and car accidents involving cab drivers and this fits the profile.   To make matters worse, she may have left her personal diary in the car and Lu Li begins to suspect that the driver might now be stalking her.

There’s a serial killer on the loose and our blind heroine is now both a potential victim (bait) and a detective out to solve the case.   Does she?  Or doesn’t she?

The Witness is a slick, well-made thriller that easily matches Hollywood technical aspects ... those who put the DVD on their viewing lists on Mar. 24 will not be disappointed.   The Witness is presented in Mandarin with English subtitles.

Arrow Video's 4K Film Restoration Of Director James Signorelli's Elvira: Mistress of the Dark Arrives On Blu-ray On Apr. 28

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will be having loads and loads of fun on Apr. 28 with the release of a new 4K film restoration of director James Signorelli’s 1988 horror comedy, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, as a Blu-ray special edition.

Cassandra Peterson had knocked around the edges of the entertainment business for years as a Las Vegas showgirl, a few small roles in films, a stint in an Italian rock band, a member of The Groundlings and she even found time to pose for Playboy, but it was a casting call in 1981 for the new female host of the proposed revival of “Fright Night” on TV that changed everything.

She got the role and Elvira of the “Movie Macabre” show was born.   She used her showgirl attributes and blended them with her Groundlings comedy timing to create an instant horror cult figure … a marketing force that quickly grew and grew.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
By 1988 it was time for Elvira to star in a movie of her own!!   In Elvira: Mistress of the Dark she plays herself as herself, no Cassandra Peterson in sight.

It is a hoot as Elvira quits her show and soon discovers that she has been named in her great aunt’s will.    She has inherited a spooky old mansion and a book of spells, which eventually has the people of the town claiming that she is a witch who must be burned at the stake.

The plot is just an excuse for Elvira to deliver snappy one-liners, most of which are double entendre jokes about her well-endowed and very shapely body.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Arrow Video’s Blu-ray presentation of Elvira: Mistress of the Dark comes loaded with extras.   There are three commentary options — a vintage commentary track featuring Cassandra Peterson, who is joined by Edie McClurg (who plays Chastity Pariah) and writer John Paragon (fellow Groundling … four time Emmy nominee for his work on Pee-wee’s Playhouse); a second with director James Signorelli, who is joined by Fangoria’s Tony Timpone, and the third commentary option features Elvira impersonator Patterson Lundquist.

Also included as bonus nuggets are the feature-length documentary Too Macabre: The Making of Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, the featurette titled “Recipe for Terror: The Creation of the Pot Monster,” image galleries, a collection of trailers and the original storyboards.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Preps DVD And Blu-ray Editions Of Director Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell For Release On Mar. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Clint Eastwood is arguably the greatest living filmmaker of the last 50 years.    He has won four Oscars, two for directing (Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven) and two for his role as a producer (the same two films).

He has been nominated for seven additional Oscars … two for acting (Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby), two for his direction (Mystic River and Letters from Iwo Jima) and three for producing (his Best Picture nominees were: Mystic River, Letters from Iwo Jima and American Sniper).

He has a reputation in the film industry for making movies on time and under budget (a craft learned from his Dirty Harry filmmaking mentor Don Siegel).

So it is a rare thing indeed when an Eastwood film fails to perform at the box office, despite a CinemaScore of “A” from audiences, a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination (Kathy Bates, her fourth Oscar nomination with a win for Best Actress in Misery) and generally favorable reviews, including a “Top Ten Films of the Year” acknowledgement from American Film Institute.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Of course we are talking about his latest directing and producing release, Richard Jewell, starring Paul Walter Hauser (I, Tonya, BlacKkKlansman, Late Night) as the title character.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced this past week that Mar. 17 will be the street date for both DVD and Blu-ray editions of the film.

The ARR works out to 95 days and the domestic box office take, despite being an Eastwood film with solid audience support, currently stands at a less-than-expected $22.3 million.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyRichard Jewell was a rent-a-cop at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, when he happened to be in the right place, at the right time, and discover a bomb that had been placed in Centennial Park.   He was initially heralded as a hero, but soon the FBI and media turned on him and made his life a living hell.

As to bonus features, both the DVD and Blu-ray release SKUs contain the featurette titled “The Real Story of Richard Jewell.”   Exclusive to the Blu-ray is the additional “The Making of Richard Jewell” featurette.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Selects Apr. 7 As The Street Date For Direector Tom Hooper's Cats

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Lesson learned … just because you can do something, doesn’t mean that you should actually do it.

Director Tom Hooper, who won the Oscar for his direction of The King’s Speech, and delivered a marvelous version of Les Misérables, decided that loads and loads of CGI cat fur would somehow be a good thing in doing a theatrical version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats.

It wasn’t … it was the stuff of nightmares, but it did give Ricky Gervais some great material for his Golden Globes opening monologue.

With this said, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced this past week that Cats will be heading home as both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack offerings on Apr. 7.

The ARR comes in 109 days and box office receipts in the domestic market finally clawed their way to $27.1 million.

As to bonus materials, director Tom Hooper provides commentary (that should be very interesting) and there are ten featurettes — “9 Lives: The Cast of Cats,” “Singing Live,” “Cat School,” “A Director's Journey,” “Making Music,” “The Art of Dance,” “Scaling Up,” “A Little Magic,” “The Dancers” and “Making Macavity.”
