Icarus Films Picks Dec. 4 For The Domestic DVD Debut Of Director Hlynur Pálmason’s Winter Brothers

Icarus Films and the KimStim Collection will be joining forces on Dec. 4 for the domestic DVD debut of Danish filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason’s chilling film festival favorite, Winter Brothers.

Hlynur Pálmason’s Winter Brothers (his debut feature-length film) was launched at the Locarno Film Festival in August of 2017 and then began a parade of win after win as it rolled along from one festival showcase to another.   The international march of screenings was accompanied by rave responses from both the audiences in attendance and the film critics who caught the various screening.

Unless you were lucky enough to attend one of these events — Chicago International Film Festival, AFI Fest, San Francisco International Film Festival , etc. — your first chance to find out what all the buzz is about will likely be on Dec. 4 when it becomes available on DVD.   Take note of that date.

Hlynur Pálmason, born in Iceland, but now living in Copenhagen, is an artist by trade who has taken to the medium of film with the view of an artist.   That becomes clear from the get-go as the location for Winter Brothers is nothing short of foreboding, chilling … a remote limestone mine in some forgotten corner of Denmark.   Filmed in color, but you can imagine the isolation of Bergman’s The Seventh Seal or Shame as the touchstone for such a place.

It is here, in this dusty, noisy and bone-chilling locale that we are introduced to Emil (Elliott Crosset Hove), a miner who seems to be better suited for loafing about, brewing hooch or living out his visions of fancy.    He clearly doesn’t fit.

We also meet his brother, Johan (Simon Sears), who is every bit the image of a miner, and Emil’s only real friend, but that will that be tested.

One of the catalysts — among several — that will eventually spin Emil’s life completely out of control is a local woman named Anna (Victoria Carmen Sonne), who Emil fantasizes about; obsesses about.   Again, Pálmason’s visual style makes these “sexual” encounters more creepy than erotic … and deliberately so.    

To say that Emil is not quite right is an understatement and as the film progresses we get an uneasy feeling about him … think: fingernails being drawn across a chalkboard.    Indeed, Elliott Crosset Hove’s performance as Emil is nothing short of riveting — creepy riveting — and like a bloody auto wreck along a busy thoroughfare, we must slow down to take a look.

Winter Brothers is presented in Danish with English subtitles.

MVD Entertainment Group Sets Marquee Blu-rauy Status For Director Joe Nussbaum's Sleepover On Dec. 11

You are invited to spend the night with director Joe Nussbaum and his girls versus girls scavenger hunt in the newest Marquee Collection addition, Sleepover.

The Blu-ray debut of this summer of 2004 teenage comedy will take place on Dec. 11.

It’s the last day of middle school — the big move to high school awaits — and Julie (played by Spy Kids’ star Alexa Vega) and her eighth grade sidekicks, Yancy (Kallie Flynn Childress), Farrah (Scout Taylor-Compton — as Laurie in the 2007 Halloween re-boot, plus Halloween II, Cynthia, Ghost House, etc.) and Hannah (Mika Boorem — The Patriot, Along Came a Spider, Blue Crush, etc.) get caught-up in a challenge from her former childhood friend, Staci (Sara Paxton — Aquamarine, Sydney White, The Last House on the Left) that could define their high school years.  

It’s a scavenger hunt, the winning team gets the prime lunchtime spot in high school, while the losers are banned to the outcast area where the “losers” dine (next to the dumpsters, which of course is symbolic for who they are … losers).   Staci has her gang, the eighth grade mean girls, and Julie has her go-to friends, but there’s just one little problem, she’s grounded … can’t leave the house when mom and dad are not home (played by (Jeff Garlin and four-time Emmy-winner, Jane Lynch — Glee, Hollywood Game Night, Dropping the Soap, etc.).

With such a challenge and the ultimate prize of high school popularity on the line, Julie is willing to risk it!   Game on!!

Sleepover is a girl’s flick for girls … and it has a cast that have gone on to amass fans for their collective work in the past 14 years, which makes the film a guilty pleasure for many.

Bonus features include commentary from director Joe Nussbaum (Sydney White), who is joined by cast members Alexa Vega, Scout Taylor-Compton, Mika Boorem and Kallie Flynn Childress, plus there are four featurettes — “A Guide to the Perfect Sleepover,” “Meet the Girls,” “Ready, Set, Action!” and “Sleepover Confessions.”   

Also included as bonus goodies are a gag reel, a wrap party reel and an extensive behind-the-scenes photo gallery.

Indican Pictures Tabs Nov. 27 For The DVD Debut Of Director Christopher Ray's Dick Dickster

Indican Pictures looks to Nov. 27 for the DVD debut of director Christopher Ray’s sensitive ode to moviemaking in Hollywood, Dick Dickster.  The craft, the talent and the heart and soul that is invested in the making of a hit film; the pain and anguish in seeing your vision tinkered with by others are presented with a clarity of vision not seen since Altman’s The Player.   

Well, maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves, so let’s just pause and give you a little background on Dick Dickster, which is written by none other than Robert Ray Shafer.

Robert Ray Shafer is, of course, the legendary Officer Joe Vickers of the 1989 cult horror film from filmmaker Wallace Potts, Psycho Cop.   In the business he’s regarded as an actor’s actor; a pro … always working, from small parts (think: character actor) to leads in indies, to roles in hit comedy series (Bob Vance of The Office sitcom series).  He does it all, including writing.

Which brings us to Dick Dickster and its release on DVD.   Shafer takes on the movie business with this laugh-out-loud comedy that he wrote and stars in as the title character.   Christopher Ray, the son of the equally legendary indie filmmaker, Fred Olen Ray, handles the direction … the son of the man who gave the world Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers follows in his father’s footsteps with Shafer’s Dick Dickster, boy if that doesn’t sound like an endorsement I don’t know what is.

In mocking terms, we meet the sloppy, obnoxious drunk Dick Dickster, a filmmaker with one hit under his belt, Cult of Doom.   Everything since has been a disaster, which in no way excuses his current sorry state.   He’s basically an industry pariah.  

Sammy (Tim Russ — best known to his fans as Tuvok of Star Trek: Voyager), his long-suffering manager, would like him to wander off into the desert and die.  His wife, “Hardy” (Melanie Good — as Cindy in Psycho Cop Returns) wants out and some underworld types want the money he owes them — Tony (Tim Abell — a Fred Olen Ray regular … Rapid Assault, American Bandits, Eyewitness, etc.) has been sent to collect (he’s basically a hitman).

If Dick doesn’t end up dead, he might be heading to prison as D.A. Lawler (Darin Cooper) is making noises about reopening a statutory rape beef associated with Dick’s production of, you guessed it, Cult of Doom.

If it is not clear by now, let’s just say that filmmaker Dick Dickster’s life is in the proverbial shitter.   It’s just a matter of time until he drinks himself to death, is whacked by the mob or Lawler gets the necessary evidence to put Dick away.

But wait, he gets an offer to remake his hit classic as an adult film titled Cult of Poon.   Naturally, his creative integrity won’t allow such a thing!   Never, never, never … until he learns that there’s a $100,000 payday and then he is all in.

Robert Ray Shafer and Christopher Ray have assembled a veteran cast — there must be over 500 screen credits among them — to have their way in mocking Hollywood and the entertainment business in general.   The script is loony and Shafer plays it to the hilt as the burnt-out Dickster … and the payoff comes when we get to the filming of Cult of Poon.   Oh my!

Indican Pictures has a winner here — a brief theatrical run to stir up interest is about to launch, but the real payday for most will be the DVD debut on Nov. 27!!
