Arrow Video Looks To Sept. 17 For The 4K Ultra HD Release Of Director Sergio Martino's Torso

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K film restoration (from the original camera negative) of director Sergio Martino’s 1973 (1975 domestic) film release of Torso ready for genre fans to enjoy on Sept. 17.

This 4K Ultra HD edition features both the original Italian-language version (running 94 minutes) and the English-dubbed domestic theatrical release presentation (about 90 minutes).  

Starring Suzy Kendall (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Darker than Amber, To Sir, With Love, Tales that Witness Madness, etc.), Torso is a clever blend of classic Italian giallo with the trendy slasher horror elements that were emerging at the time.    Her friends are being murdered and hacked to pieces one by one … who is the killer, what’s the motive and will she survive?   

Bonus goodies include commentary from Kat Ellinger (“All the Colours of Sergio Martino”), alternate opening and closing credits, the 2017 Q & A session at the Abertoir International Horror Festival with Sergio Martino and five featurettes — “All the Colors of Terror,” “The Discreet Charm of the Genre,” “Dial S for Suspense,” “Women in Blood” and “Saturating the Screen.”

 

Cleopatra Entertainment Rocks Out On Sept 06 With Four Blu-ray Concert Releases Featuring • Tanya Tucker • Todd Rundgren • John Mayall • UFO

Cleopatra Entertainment, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has not one or two new Blu-ray concert releases ready for fans to enjoy on Friday, Sept. 6, but four … count’em, FOUR!   So let’s get to it!!

First up is the Blu-ray debut of Tanya Tucker: Live at the Renaissance Center (2006).
This 15-song set includes “My Arms Stay Open,” “Tell Me About It,” “Don't Go Out With Him,” “If Your Heart Ain't Busy” and “One Love at a Time.”

Bonus features include a video session with Tanya Tucker and the 2007 concert at Casino Rama in Orillia, Canada. 

Next up on Sept. 6 is the Blu-ray debut of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers: Up Close and Personal.

This vintage “concerts” collection includes numbers from the 1998 and 1999 Houston-area live performances at Billy Blues and Rockefellers.

Included in the mix are eight Mayall Blues classics including “White Line Fever,” “A Hard Road,” and “Voodoo Music.”

That’s two … how about number three?    Would the Blu-ray debut of Todd Rundgren: Healing Live be right up your alley?

Back in 2010 Todd Rundgren was having fun with “Rundgren Radio” and also did a six show concert tour billed as “Todd/Healing” … the result are a ten-song set that includes “Healer,” “Pulse,” “Tiny Demons,” “Flesh” and “Time.”

The Criterion Collection Announces Its October Release Slate • Top Lined By Produced By Val Lewton On 4K Ultra HD Oct. 08 (I Walked With A Zombie, The Seventh Victim)

The Criterion Collection has just announced its 2024 October slate of new film restoration, which is topped by (always a subjective call) the Oct. 8 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack release of Produced by Val Lewton. 

This is a double-feature showcasing films produced by the legendary Val Lewton in 1943.   Both are new 4K restorations.

Kicking off the evening’s double-feature presentation (be sure to have the popcorn ready) is director Jacques Tourneur’s I Walked with a Zombie, the follow-up entry film to Lewton’s very successful 1942 release of Cat People (also directed by Tourneur).

Betsy Connell (Frances Dee — Wells Fargo, So Ends Our Night, Reunion in Reno, etc.) is a nurse who has been hired by Paul Holland (Tom Conway — The Falcon in San Francisco, Cat People, The Falcon Strikes Back), a sugarcane plantation owner on the island Saint Sebastian in the Caribbean, to care for his wife Jessica (Christine Gordon).  She is suffering from an unknown “tropical” disease.  

What Betsy (Frances Dee was a last minute replacement when Anna Lee was forced to withdraw with a scheduling conflict … this was Dee’s only genre film) discovers is that Jessica has been cursed and is in a permanent zombie-like state.   The other thing that Betsy discovers is that not all of the residents of Saint Sebastian are whom they appear to be.   Very mysterious!

Commentary by authors Kim Newman and Stephen Jones is included with I Walked with a Zombie.

The Second feature is The Seventh Victim, also from 1943 that was originally scheduled to be directed by Tourneur, but he was replaced by film editor Mark Robson in his first directing assignment — he would go on to be nominated for Best Director for Peyton Place and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (Robson would follow up with The Ghost Ship, Isle of the Dead and Bedlam — all Lewton productions).

Future Oscar-winner Kim Hunter (Best Supporting Actress for A Streetcar Named Desire) would make her film debut here as Mary Gibson, who drops out of school to go to New York City to search for Jacqueline (Jean Brooks), her sister who has gone missing.

Mary discovers some strange goings-on involving a secret devil-worshipping cult known as the Palladists, who have Jacqueline under their control.   Who can she trust?   Jacqueline’s psychiatrist, Dr. Judd (played by Tom Conway) … can he be trusted?   Murder and mayhem follow … will Mary be the next victim?

Bonus features include commentary from film historian Steve Haberman.   

Also included director Constantine Nasr’s feature-length documentary titled Shadows in the Dark: The Val Lewton Legacy.

Mill Creek Entertainment Tabs Sept. 17 For The Blu-ray Debut Of Bewitched: The Complete Series

Mill Creek Entertainment has made it official.

Sept. 17 will the street date for the 22-disc Blu-ray collection of Bewitched: The Complete Series, starring Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha, the 400-year old witch who marries Darrin, a mortal (played by Dick York for the first five seasons and then Dick Sargent for the balance of the series).   

They have two children, Tabitha (Erin Murphy) and Adam (David Mandel-Bloch) … and one pesky mother-in-law, Endora (Agnes Moorehead).

All 254 episodes from the series are included here.  Bewitched: The Complete Series was nominated for 22 Emmy Awards in various category over its eight season run.

Bayview Entertainment Targets July 30 For The Blu-ray Debut Of Documentary Filmmaker Daniel Zubiate's Purple Pie Place

Road Trip!!!

Get ready for some summer fun on July 30 with the Blu-ray debut of documentary filmmaker Daniel Zubiate’s Purple Pie Place from Bayview Entertainment.

Braker Lane Films hit the road and landed smack dab in the middle of Custer, South Dakota and found the coolest place to visit if you are heading to Mount Rushmore and the surrounding area for a summer road trip.   

It’s the Purple Pie Place, a restaurant that opened in 1981 and is only opened from late March until early fall … it has, over the years, become legendary with lines of eager customers circling the place waiting to get in!

Zubiate and his crew hooked up with the new owners (the fourth), Yulia Yehle and her husband Bobby to document the history of the place — Zubiate has been going there for the past 25 years and it became something of an obsession for him.

The documentary unfolds over the entire tourist season.   Beginning with the preparation for opening until the final curtain, when the place closes down for the winter months.   In all, Zubiate and his crew made seven trips to Custer during the “tourist season” to film the various aspects of the operation of the Purple Pie Place.

Unobstructed View Shows "Hollywood" How It Is Done With The “Oppenheimer Model” For The 4K Ultra HD Launch For Director Tinto Brass' Caligula: The Ultimate Cut On Sept. 17

The headline should read: Indie Gets It Right!   Studios, please take note of how it is done, please!!

Unobstructed View is set to release the Drafthouse Films “Ultimate Cut” of director Tinto Brass’ Caligula theatrically on Aug. 16.  This will be followed by the distribution of Caligula: The Ultimate Cut 4K Ultra HD Collection (two 4K discs, a Blu-ray disc and a bonus CD soundtrack) on Sept. 17 (a double-disc Blu-ray purchasing option and a stand-alone DVD edition will also be available).

Here’s the big news — the news that the so-called “Hollywood” studios are ignoring — the VOD window for Caligula: The Ultimate Cut will not arrive until Oct. 18.   

Let that sink in!   Unobstructed View is following the highly successful “Oppenheimer Model” in the distribution of this restored “classic.”  

This distribution scheme actually has a formal name: Promo, Better, Best.   It was the model that studios (and book publishers) followed during the past century.   It works.

This is how it goes.   First, Best is the theatrical release window (which comes first) where the distributor controls the film asset and shares the revenue with its exhibiting partners.   There is little to no chance of piracy at this point.

Note, we did formally alert AMC Theatres that one of their “digital prints” was used (likely in the New England area) to generate the first pirated Blu-ray edition of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.   To our knowledge nothing came of this alert, but at least they were make aware of the issue … and acknowledged same.

Next, Better is the distribution of physical media assets.   Again, the distributor controls the film asset and its distribution — in this case, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD product offerings.   Copies can be ripped at this point, but that is rarely an issue.

And finally, Promo, which is the VOD window for all those down-market consumers who are too lazy to go to the local multiplex or lay down the bucks for a physical media edition of the film.   This is where piracy is running rampant these days as the studios are putting the VOD window before the physical media release (if that ever happens … witness: Napoleon, Killers of the Flower Moon, etc.).

Unobstructed View and Drafthouse Films have gone to the expense of restoring this film — a landmark film in some ways — and they have wisely taken the precautions of controlling the distribution of this asset to minimize piracy (which will happen … most likely on Oct. 18).

As to what Unobstructed View is serving up on Aug. 16 is the newly restored “Ultimate Cut” of the film, which clocks in at 178 minutes.   The second 4K Ultra HD disc features the original theatrical cut of the film, which run 151 minutes and 47 seconds.

For the “Ultimate Cut” we have two separate commentary options.   Producer and re-constructionist Thomas Negovan is joined by re-construction editor Aaron Shaps in the first commentary option, while author Grant Morrison teams up with Negovan for the second.

These commentaries should be very informative when you consider the history of the film.   In well-documented accounts, Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione began working with famed author and playwright Gore Vidal in 1976 on a film production focusing on the life and times of First Century Roman tyrant, Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, who is better to known to history as simply Caligula.

Vidal set out to get it right and used contemporaneous accounts (notably: “The Annals of Tacitus” and “The Lives of the Twelve Caesars by C. Seutonius Tranquillus”) to create an extensive vision of Caligula’s madness and excesses.

Meanwhile, Guccione set out to find an arthouse director to bring his vision of what it was really like in Caligula’s court — both in terms of the violence and the excessive sexual elements (also well documented).   The likes of Federico Fellini and Lina Wertmuller turned him down.

After seeing director Tinto Brass’ Salon Kitty (aka: Madam Kitty) in the spring of 1976, Guccione approached him on directing the film.   The deal was done.   Malcolm McDowell, who was sensational in Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, was cast as Caligula, Teresa Ann Savoy (as Margherita in Salon Kitty) was tapped for the role Drusilla, Caligula’s sister (and lover), Helen Mirren as Caesonia (Caligula’s wife and mother to his child … among her other “talents”) and Peter O’Toole was Tiberius.

An impressive cast to be sure.    Brass shot “his” version of the film.   Guccione was not pleased and fired Brass and took over the production, shooting extensive “inserts” after the original production had already wrapped.   Because of strict Italian rules for directing and producing credits, Guccione had to smuggle his new footage out of the country under bogus title labels.

Time passed … 1977 came and went.   1978 as well!   Where is Caligula?   Finally, in August of 1979 the film opens in Italy … and lasted about six days before Italian authorizes shut it down.

Nothing but controversy followed.   So much so that Guccione had to “four-wall” theatres for its domestic theatrical release (beginning in February of 1980) … he rented each venue, a common practice back then.

Now, in glorious 4K, you can see both the theatrical cut and what Negovan and his crew envisioned as the Brass (fully endorsed by McDowell) vision for the film.

Additional bonus features, which are on the companion Blu-ray disc, include a trio of production featurettes — “The Orgy of Power,” “The Making of Caligula” and “The Guccione Scandal.”
