MVD Entertainment Group Sets Marquee Collection Blu-ray Edition Of director Scott Ziehl’s Road House 2 For Delivery On Jan. 22

The Double-Deuce and James Dalton, the “cooler,” were the elements of the surprise 1989 box office hit, Road House. Patrick Swayze was Dalton, a lethal weapon, who just wanted to enjoy life in rural Missouri with “Doc” Clay (Kelly Lynch), but events just kept dragging him from one altercation to the next. It was an action gem!

Word arrived this past week that MVD Entertainment Group has bestowed the coveted Marquee Collection status on director Scott Ziehl’s 2006 direct-to-video sequel, Road House 2, for a Blu-ray push on Jan. 22.

The same elements are revisited to good effect is this kick-ass sequel, which finds Johnathon Schaech (How to Make an American Quilt, That Thing You Do!, Prom Night) starring as Dalton’s son, Shane, who is an undercover DEA agent working the nasty streets of New York City.

When word arrives that his uncle Nate (played by Will Patton) has been beaten near to death because he wouldn’t sell his popular watering hole, The Black Pelican, Shane does what any good nephew would do, he saddles up and heads south to Louisiana to deal with the scum.

He first has to take on Wild Bill (played by Jake Busey) and his local thugs, but soon learns that the real muscle behind the plans to take over The Black Pelican is none other than Miami drug lord, Victor Cross (Richard Norton — Mad Max: Fury Road, Mind Games, The Octagon).

The love interest this time around is a local school schoolmarm named Beau Hampton (Ellen Hollman … as Saxa in the Spartacus television series), who, as luck would have, can handle her own in a brawl. There is also closure to Shane’s search for his father’s murderer … a nice twist at the end reveals all!

Mill Creek Entertainment Expands Its Jan. 8 DVD Release Calendar With Two New Priced-To-Collection World War II Collections

With a major priced-to-collection Blu-ray promotion already in place for the New Year (a six-title “Retro VHS” packaging selection on Jan. 15 that includes the likes of Happy Birthday to Me, Silent Rage, The Last Action Hero and Who is Harry Crumb?), Mill Creek Entertainment has announced plans to expand the early January of 2019 release calendar with a pair of World War II-themed documentary collections on DVD.

Set for delivery on Jan. 8 — and priced to own at just $19.98 each — are the six-disc presentation of WWII: Behind the Front Lines of the War that Shook the World and the three-disc set of Secret Stories of Hitler. Both collections include Digital Copy.

WWII: Behind the Front Lines of the War that Shook is a collection of three separate documentary series, which kicks of with the 21 episode collection of The Finest Hours of WWII (the rise of the Axis powers are explored; the great battles are detailed … and the devastating final conclusion with the arrival of the atomic age). Next up is the five-part presentation Combat Aircraft, which examines the birth of aviation through the advancements by the end of World War II (the dawn of jet aircraft) … and the last collection in this 24-hour combined presentation is Waves of Freedom.

The other World War II-themed collection being released by Mill Creek Entertainment on Jan. 8 is Secret Stories of Hitler, which includes Academy Award-winning producer David Puttnam’s controversial 1974 documentary, Swastika, the six-part presentation of Hitler: Anecdotes, Myths and Lies (aka Hitler: The Untold Story) and the three-part release of U-Boats: Hitler’s Sharks.

Paramount Home Media Teams With Nickelodeon Home Entertainment For The Feb. 5 DVD Release Of Blaze and the Monster Machines: Robot Riders

On Feb. 5, Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution will be teaming up for the DVD debut of Blaze and the Monster Machines: Robot Riders!

Axle City could take a major hit from a runaway train — and more (watch out for that glue … and is that a volcano about to blow?) — if Blaze and his pals don’t up their game. This comes in the form of mega-strong robot suits as everyone joins in to save the day.

Also included in the animated adventures are stories about rescuing three lost baby Tyrannosauruses in Dinosaur Valley, Crusher accidently creating a giant meatball with too much “grow spice” and when Space Commander Megan is marooned on Pluto it is Blaze to the rescue — wormholes, ice volcanoes and asteroids are no match for these Monster Machines!

Arrow Video Tabs Jan. 8 For The Release Of A Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Edition Of director Gilbert Moses’ Willie Dynamite

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has carved out Jan. 8 for the Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack debut of director Gilbert Moses’ 1974 Blaxploitation classic, Willie Dynamite.

Now put yourself, for a moment, in the shoes of Roscoe Orman — who is known to his many fans as Gordon Robinson of Sesame Street (44 years and going strong) — in the early months of 1974. You’ve just landed the starring role in Universal Pictures Blaxploitation film, Willie Dynamite — as a New York City pimp — and at the same time, in what will be a career-defining, multi-generational role on the PBS kidvid series Sesame Street. Will they stick with you?

The film’s path to the screen began two years earlier when producers David Brown and Richard D. Zanuck, seeing the success of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, Shaft and Super Fly, quickly snatched up screenwriter Ron Cutler’s script (his first). It would be Brown and Zanuck’s only foray into Blaxploitation as film such as Jaws, The Verdict and Driving Miss Daisy would take their interests elsewhere.

By the end of the year (or perhaps early 1973), they had recruited newcomer Gilbert Moses to direct (his previous directing experience was on Broadway) and filming was completed soon their after at Universal Pictures (interiors) and on location in New York City. The film was released in early 1974 — panned by the critics, but audiences flocked to it … and, as they say, the rest is history.

As to the story itself, Willie is a New York City pimp, who supplies beautiful hookers to conventioneers, but the police are taking a dim view of such activities.

Meanwhile, a former hooker named Cora (Diana Sands) is in a relationship with DA Daniels (Thalmus Rasulala) and has taken it upon herself to reform prostitutes by getting them jobs as models, which brings her into head-to-head conflict with Willie when she tries to recruit one of his top earners, Pashen (Joyce Walker).

This will be a running battle between Willie and Cora throughout the film, with him constantly in and out of jail — a running gag has his beloved Cadillac being towed away again and again. Things, however, take a nasty turn when a competitor by name of Bell (Roger Robinson) decides to push Willie out of the business … and in a twist ending Willie finds help (and salvation) from a very unlikely source!!!

Bonus features include “Kiss My Baad Asss,” a guide to Blaxploitation hosted by actor and musician Ice-T, and featuring interviews with Richard Roundtree (Shaft), Melvin van Peebles (Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song), Isaac Hayes (Oscar-winner for Best Original Song from Shaft) and more.
