Paramount Home Media Readies "Paramount Presents" Blu-ray Edition Of Airplane For Release On July 21

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media has tabbed July 21 as the street date for the studio’s latest addition to its “Paramount Presents” line of up-graded Blu-ray products.

Airplane! has been selected to be the seventh title in the series, which kicked off on Apr. 21 with Blu-ray spiffed-up editions of Fatal Attraction, King Creole and To Catch a Thief.

With air travel in chaos these days it might be time for a good laugh about just that, chaos in the skies.   Back in 1980, the directing tandem of Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker delivered a rat-a-tat-tat tale of epic proportions — filled with a zillion sight gags and a plethora of dazzling one-liners — as former pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), terrified of flying, has to take over when Capt. Oveur (Peter Graves) and the rest of flight crew are stricken with food poisoning!!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyEveryone tries to help, including his former girlfriend Elaine, who, as luck would have it is a flight attendant on this very flight.   It is going to be tough getting Striker down … the pressure builds and the tower supervisor, Steve McCroskey (Lloyd Bridges), is quick to point out that it is the “wrong week to quit smoking … drinking … doing amphetamines … sniffing glue.”

Bonus features including filmmaker commentary, a newly-prepared Q & A with Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker and the newly-minted featurette titled “Filmmaker Focus: Airplane!”

MVD Entertainment Group Announces Rewind Collection Status For The Aug. 11 Blu-ray Rollout Of Director Dennis Dimster's Mikey

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
MVD Entertainment Group has a brand, spanking new addition to its very popular “Rewind Collection” promotional line of Blu-ray releases — which are “cult classics” from video stores (remember those, video stores … get your video rentals and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy).

The candidate for a Blu-ray launch on Aug. 11 is the new film restoration of director Dennis Dimster’s 1992 horror chiller, Mikey, featuring Brian Bonsell (as Alexander in Star Trek: The Next Generation), as the title character, a nasty little psychopath in training … actually, on second thought, he may already have arrived.

In the opening sequence our little nut job drowns his foster sister, electrocutes his foster mom and calmly waits for his foster father to arrive home … and then beats him to death with a baseball bat.  Nice little fellow, who goes “turtle” and hides in a closet and calmly waits for the authorities to arrive.   Poor Mikey, the sole survivor … poor, poor Mikey.

We skip ahead and a new foster family, Neil (John Diehl — Jurassic Park III, A Time to Kill, Stripes, etc.) and his wife, Rachel (Mimi Craven, former wife of Wes Craven), are found for Mikey.   It is a horrible bit of luck.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Mikey, which followed in the wake of Child’s Play, which was released theatrically in November of 1988, is pretty much the live-action alternative.  Mikey, the boy, is a nasty bit of business.   This kid is mentally ill, he’s a serial killer, a murderer, but because he’s a child, you never, ever suspect that he could be as evil as he is.

Mikey is a gem … a horror thriller that still works today.   And, MVD has a top-notch addition to its killer “Rewind Collection” line of Blu-ray products (“killer” in more ways than one).

Bonus features include a new, feature-length documentary that is titled The Making of Mikey, plus the newly-minted featurette titled “Mikey: Anatomy of a Scene.”

Writer/Director Lucie Borleteau's The Perfect Nanny Arrives On DVD Courtesy Of Icarus Films On June 23

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Icarus Films will be guiding to market on June 23 the Distrib Films release of writer/director Lucie Borleteau’s film adaptation of Leila Slimani’s best-selling crime thriller, The Perfect Nanny.

The book won the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 2016, was translated from French to English, and became a best seller in the United States as well.   The story, which was based on, or should we say, “inspired by” actual events in New York City in 2012, introduces us to Myriam (Leïla Bekhti — Midnight Sun, The Source), an attorney with two young children who is torn between taking care of her kids and getting back to her career.

The solution, a nanny, who comes in the form of Louise (played by 13-time César Awards nominee Karin Viard — with wins for Little Tickles, Summer Things and Haut les Coeurs! … she was nominated for Best Actress for her performance here), who seems a little “off,” even if she is the epitome of Mary Poppins, “practically perfect in every way.”

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The Perfect Nanny is anything but Mary Poppins, as the film progresses sinister tones emerge.   The signs are there, but Myriam is tickled to be back in the swing of thing and her husband, Paul (Antoine Reinartz — School Life, Beats Per Minute), wants to keep her happy and is willing to give Louise more than the benefit of the doubt.

Chilling, the steady “turning of the screw” brings us to a terrifying finale that leaves us on the edge of our seats urging Myriam and Paul to wake up before Louise’s last strings connecting her to sanity are cut away.

The Perfect Nanny is presented in French with English subtitles.

Arrow Video Tabs July 7 For Blu-ray Release Of Writer/Director Mike Hodges' Black Rainbow

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has tabbed July 7 for Blu-ray debut — complete with a new film restoration from the original film negative — of writer/director Mike Hodges’ under-appreciated gothic chiller, Black Rainbow.

British filmmaker Mike Hodges (Get Carter, Flash Gordon, The Terminal Man, etc.) came to the United States in the fall of 1988 and filmed a gothic-like supernatural crime thriller, whew, that’s a lot of genre-blending … you can even throw in precognitive sci-fi elements if you are so inclined.

In any case, Black Rainbow stars Rosanna Arquette — after Desperately Seeking Susan, Silverado, and After Hours, but before Pulp Fiction — as Martha Travis, a travelling road show “medium,” a huckster, a con artist.   Her father, Walter (played by Jason Robards), is her manager and he likes to drink, well, actually, he likes to drink a lot.

At one of these sessions she actually sees the pending death of a local by the name of Tom Kuron (Olek Krupa — Burn After Reading, Hidden Figures), a nobody, but who is about to blow the whistle on some corporate shenanigans … and he is subsequently murdered.   She saw it, she said in her act and poor Tom died.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

To another nobody, a local journalist by the name of Gary Wallace (Tom Hulce — Animal House, Amadeus), that sounds like a story.  So he starts following Martha and Walter around … and sure enough she sees more deaths before they happen.   And to make matters worse, the killer decides that her little act has to come to an end.   So, does she see her own death, will Wallace come to her rescue, or is it the end for all of them?

Nice cast, decent story, sharp production values, but financial problems precluded a theatrical release, so it went the direct-to-video route after working the film festival circuit beginning in October of 1989.   VHS in 1991, DVD (now out of print) followed in 2005 … now, finally, on Blu-ray from Arrow Video on July 7.

Bonus features include a vintage commentary option from filmmaker Mike Hodges, plus a newly-prepared commentary with film historians Kat Ellinger and Samm Deighan.
There are also five featurettes — “Message in a Bottle,” “8 Minutes,” “Disasters,” “Seeing the Future” and “Behind the Rainbow.”

Wolfe Selects June 16 For The DVD Debut Of Writer/Director Wendy Jo Carlton's Good Kisser

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Wolfe announced this past week that writer/director Wendy Jo Carlton’s Good Kisser will be making the transition from the film festival circuit to the home entertainment marketplace on June 16.

The film began working the circuit last September, with screenings at the Long Beach QFilm, Cinema Diverse in Palm Springs, Sarasota’s Fabulous Indie … and then jumped out internationally with European screening dates.   With the Covid-19 lockdowns those public screening options are no long an option.   So the DVD move makes quite a bit of sense for Wolfe and filmmaker Wendy Jo Carlton.

Kate (Rachel Paulson — Fixer, Heartland) and Jenna (Kari Alison Hodge — The Arrangement, Get Close, Darling Nikki) have been a couple going on two years, with Kate into the trappings of style and “things,” while Jenna is more along the lines of a milquetoast, insecure … unsure.

That dynamic has reached its limits, it is time to move forward or part company … that’s where this day-in-the-life of Kate and Jenna begins in Carlton’s Good Kisser.   The solution, an evening of fun with an invited guest, Mia (Julia Eringer — Fox Trap, The Black Water Vampire) … on the surface, perhaps an erotic adventure to spice things up, but, as it is sometimes said, “the game is afoot.”

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
From the get-go Jenna is unsure of Kate’s plan, but Mia is a force of nature, sexual, pleasing and charming.   Throw in some dancing, a few drinks and intimacy and you can see how such an arrangement might be very enjoyable.

But filmmaker Wendy Jo Carlton (Easy Abby, Hannah Free, Brushfires) has delivered more than just an erotic evening with three attractive individuals … that would have been the easy road.   Instead, the complexities of relationships, the games of power, reality and insecurities are touched upon during the course of the evening … and nothing will ever be the same.

Bonus features include video sessions with Julia Eringer, Kari Alison Hodge and Rachel Paulson.
