Warner Bros. Home Entertainment To Release DVD • Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack • And 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Editions Of Dunkirk On Dec. 19

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Unless there’s something lurking in the weeds during the Christmas-season rush of new film releases that, cinematically-speaking, could upset the apple cart, the clear front-runner for Best Picture Oscar laurels in 2017 is writer/director Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk.

Of course the same thing could have been said back in 1998 when Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Robert Rodat teamed for Saving Private Ryan, which somehow lost to Harvey Weinstein’s insipid Shakespeare in Love.   One of the greatest emotional experiences ever to reach the screen was not Oscar-worthy.

The question is, will Dunkirk suffer the same fate?   The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has a date with destiny on Sunday, March 4, 2018 to turn-around the efforts of its members over the past few years to all but destroy the Oscar brand with some very questionable Best Picture choices — Moonlight over La La Land (or even Hell or High Water); Spotlight over The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road or The Big Short (take your pick); Birdman, The Artist, seriously.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyWe while have to wait to see how the crushing politics and hypocrisy of the award’s season plays out, but for now the date of Dec. 19 can be circled on your home entertainment release calendar for the delivery of DVD, Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack editions of Dunkirk to your favorite retail outlet.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment finally made it official this past week after a three-week battle with retailing giant amazon.com over date-jumping and some confusion over the actual home entertainment launch (sparked by amazon.com).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The ARR is a leisurely 151 days and the domestic box office haul currently stands at $187.7 million.

The battle of Dunkirk plays out in a one-hour (the air battle), one-day (the sea rescue) and one-week (the trapped British and French forces) story that Nolan has cleverly blended together to tell a powerful tale of survival and heroism.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe bonus features are organized along these same lines in three over-arching presentations.   “The Land” features “Rebuilding the Mole,” “The Army on the Beach” and “Uniform Approach;” “The Sea” includes “Assembling the Naval Fleet,” “Launching the Moonstone,” “Taking to the Sea” “Sinking the Ships” and “The Little Ships;” and “The Air” has “Taking to the Air” and “Inside the Cockpit.”

There is also a making-of collection titled “Creation” which include four featurette segments — “Revisiting the Miracle,” “Dunkerque,” “Expanding the Frame” and “The In-Camera Approach.”   Finally, there is one final duo of featurettes titled “Conclusion” — “Turning Up the Tension” and “The Dunkirk Spirit.”

Vinegar Syndrome Picks Dec. 12 For The Next Slate Of New Film Restorations For DVD And Blu-ray Release

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Vinegar Syndrome announced this past week that Dec. 12 will be the next street for the next selection of new Blu-ray and DVD restorations.

It is like a cinematic wonderland … where does one begin!!!

Let’s start with the Crown International Pictures production of director Bernard Hirschenson’s 1975 “roadTRIP” gem, Pick-Up.   Which gets a new 2K restoration from the film’s original 35mm camera negative.

This is a mixed-genre mishmash that is part sexploitation, part occult thriller and part drug-induced hippie/magic bus/trip-out.   In other words, Pick-Up can be anything you want … and then some.

Carol (Jill Senter in her only film role) and Maureen (Gini Eastwood, also in her only screen appearance) are hanging out in the Florida Everglades when a converted bus (a decked-out home away from home tour bus) stops and the driver, Chuck (Alan Long, yes his only screen appearance as well), offers them a ride (they were just sort of there in the weeds).   Carol is all for it, but Maureen senses danger, but in they get and off they go.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Chuck, as it turns out, has to deliver the bus to Tallahassee for a client and he is running a little behind schedule (his cigar-chomping boss keeps calling on the bus’ high-tech cellular phone … pretty awesome for 1975).   In no time, as the bus rolls along, he wants to get high with Carol, who, in turn, decides to dance topless just as a pick-up truck full of horny teens cruises by … they enjoy her impromptu dance in the front window of the bus (this little event foreshadows what will come later).

Meanwhile, Maureen has settled in with her tarot cards and is experiencing all sorts of weird vibes.   Pretty soon, and we are not pulling you leg here, Chuck comes to a detour, out in the middle of nowhere, manned by one guy with no apparent reason to be there.   On the side road, that they are directed to, they eventually get bogged down and some pretty strange things unfold.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThere’s a mystical temple in the swamp that Maureen happens upon (an excuse to get naked), Chuck and Carol find a baby raccoon (and they too get naked) and there’s a clown, with balloons, prancing around … must have missed the party.  Oh yes, remember those guys in the pick-up truck, they too will find their way to this party spot.

Pick-Up, like we said, is anything you want it to be.   It can be viewed as simply a mid-‘70s drive-in sexploitation flick … or a pretty strong case can be made that the entire series of events that unfolded were simply visions of “possible things to come” experienced by Maureen (the ending seems to suggest this) just before her and Carol got on the bus at the beginning of the film.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
As to bonus goodies, there’s a commentary track from director Bernard Hirschenson, video sessions with Hirschenson and actress Gini Eastwood and bonus movie … Orgy at Lil’s Place (produced by Hirschenson in 1963).

Next up is a double feature showcasing two by cult filmmaker Andy Milligan.   Teamed together — with new 4K restorations — are Seeds (1968) and his 1965 short film, Vapors.

Seeds is a thought-to-be-lost killer-on-the-loose thriller that appears to have had some regional theatrical exposure from fly-by-night distributor, Harrington Film Distributing Corporation, back 1968.   In any case, the film was withdrawn from distribution and re-cut as Seeds of Sin, which surfaced back in 2004 on DVD as part of a double-feature release from Something Weird Video … with Milligan’s The Ghastly Ones (also released theatrically in 1968, but by J.E.R. Pictures).
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Vinegar Syndrome has re-assembled Seeds into it’s original director’s cut (unseen since 1968) and is also including the alternate “sexploitation” cut, Seeds of Sin.

As to bonus goodies, there is a video session with writer John Borske, who gave us scripts for Gutter Trash, Torture Dungeon and Bloodthirsty Butchers (all joint efforts with director Andy Milligan), another video session with Vapors’ actor Gerald Jacuzzo (Torture Dungeon, Guru, The Mad Monk), a Q&A session film at the Quad Cinema screening in New York earlier this year featuring Borske, Jacuzzo and Seeds’ actress Patricia Dillon (who also appeared in Milligan’s Gutter Trash and Torture Dungeon).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
And Dec. 12 will also mark the arrival of the latest edition of Vinegar Syndrome’s popular “Peekarama” series of vintage adult features.   Presented here — with new 2K scans from the original 35mm negatives — are two from director Paul Vatelli … Nasty Nurses (1984, with nurses portrayed by Janey Robbins, Brooke West, Kimberly Carson and “Candystriper” Misty Dawn … Herschel Savage is Dr. Matthews and Kay Parker is his lusty wife, Joyce) and Let’s Talk Sex (1983, featuring the love “call girls” of the phone sex shop, “Dial-A-Fantasy).

Cleopatra Music And Films Readies The Rift: Dark Side of the Moon For DVD Release On Dec. 12

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Cleopatra Music & Films, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has selected Dec. 12 for the DVD debut of director Dejan Zecevic’s sci-fi thriller, The Rift: Dark Side of the Moon.

Something happened on the moon.   In a prologue we learn that a team of American astronauts encountered something during their mission on the moon and now all hell is about to be unleashed on Earth!

With the aid of local Serbian operatives, a team of CIA agents are dispatched to a remote area north of Belgrade to investigate the downed spacecraft … included on the team are “John Smith” (Ken Foree — Dawn of the Dead, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Water for Elephants, etc.), Liz Waid (Katarina Cas — The Wolf of Wall Street, Danny Collins) and Dysart (Monte Markham).

The effects of the conflict in Serbia remain and much of the area that they focus on in their search is battle scarred and abandoned, which brings an eerie and uneasy feeling to their efforts.   Soon they discover one of the astronauts from the mission, who is neither all that well (in fact, he’s dead) and he has a story for them that none of them are all that eager to hear.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

It seems that they encounter a malevolent force on the moon — an alien presence — that has transported itself to Earth (a presence that is capable of time-shifting and time-portal transporting) and this “force” is preparing an army for invasion.   Army?   What army … everything looks pretty much dead around here!   That would be the army … the dead from Serbia’s bloody recent past!!!

Mill Creek Entertainment Expands Its Jan. 16 (2018) Release Calendar With Blu-ray Editions Of Yor: The Hunter from the Future And S.W.A.T.: Special Edition

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Mill Creek Entertainment continues to expand its first wave of 2018 DVD and Blu-ray priced-to-collect product offering with news this week that Italian filmmaker Antonio Margheriti’s 1983 film release of Yor, The Hunter from the Future, will be available on Jan. 16 as a 35th Anniversary Blu-ray edition.

The future and the prehistoric past intersect in the world of Yor (played by Reb Brown — Sssssss, The Sword and the Sorcerer, Uncommon Valor, Howling II: ... Your Sister Is a Werewolf, etc.), a loner in what appears to be a prehistoric world inhabited by dinosaurs and cave dwellers.

One day he comes to the rescue of a hunter named Kala’a (Corinne Cléry — perhaps best known as “O” in Just Jaeckin’s 1975 film release of The Story of O, plus such films as Bond Girl, Corinne Dufour, in Moonraker) and her mentor, Pag (Luciano Pigozzi), who are under attack from a strange beast.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
This encounter sets in motion a series of life-and-death adventures that eventually lead Yor and Kala’a to the truth about the world in which they live.  They discover that is a post-nuclear holocaust Earth, with tech-survivor, The Overlord (John Steiner) holding dominion over the planet’s now primitive survivors.

Bonus features include a new commentary option with the film’s star, Reb Brown.
Also heading to Blu-ray on Jan. 16 is S.W.A.T.: 15th Anniversary Special Edition.   Directed by Clark Johnson and starring Colin Farrell, Samuel L. Jackson, Michelle Rodriguez and LL Cool J as Los Angeles S.W.A.T. team members who are locked in a war with a power drug dealer who is aided by a former team member (played by Jeremy Renner).

Bonus goodies include two separate commentary options.
