Arrow Video Selects May 21 As The Delivery Date For 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Editions Of Director Joe Carnahan's Narc And Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, steps up with not one, but two new 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack theatrical releases that are both set for delivery on May 21.

The first up is a new 4K restoration — from the original 35mm camera negative — of director Joe Carnahan's 2002 crime thriller, Narc, teaming Jason Patric (Solarbabies, The Lost Boys, Rush, Sleepers) with Ray Liotta (Goodfellas, No Escape, Unforgettable, Hannibal) as Detroit police detectives who get assigned the politically-hot investigation of the unsolved murder of an undercover cop.

The film itself is edgy — dark, violent — and that presented funding problems, which ultimately led to a record number of film producer credits for Narc (if you ponied up some money to finish the film, you got a producer’s credit, including Tom Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner).

Bonus features include a vintage commentary with filmmaker Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces, The Grey) and film editor John Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy, Pacific Rim, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), a new introduction by Carnahan, four new featurettes — “Shattering the Blue Line,” “Shooting Narc,” “If You Live Another Day” and “The Journey of the Costume” — four archived featurettes — “Making the Deal,” “The Visual Trip,” “The Friedkin Connection” and “Shooting Up” — plus archived video sessions with Carnahan, Liotta, Patric, fellow filmmaker William Friedkin and more.

The other new 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack from Arrow Video on May 21 is director Guillermo del Toro’s 2015 gothic horror tale, Crimson Peak, starring Mia Wasikowska (Stoker, Judy & Punch, Tracks, etc.) and the “brother/sister” team of Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston.

Unearthed Films Has A Newly-Minted 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Edition Of Filmmakers Screaming Mad George And Steven Wang's The Guyver Ready For Fans To Enjoy On May 21

Unearthed Films, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K restoration (from the 35mm camera negative) of Japanese filmmaker “Screaming Mad George” (aka: Joni Tani) and Steven Wang’s 1991 adaptation of Yoshiki Takaya’s manga series, The Guyver, targeted for release as a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack “Limited Edition” on May 21.

This is the R-rated (unaltered) version of the film, which was cut for the domestic theatrical run back in the spring of 1991.

Part super-hero movie, part sci-fi thriller and part “Kaiju” battle royal, The Guyver has a college kid by the name of Sean (played by Jack Armstrong — Student Bodies) being transformed into “Guyver” — a mutant with incredible fighting powers — when he finds a device that was stolen from Chronos.

When thugs dispatched by Chronos — Zoanoids — first attempt to recover the gizmo goes south (kidnapping Sean’s “girlfriend,” Mizuki, and seemingly killing Sean), Chronos turns to grotesque Kaiju to battle a resurrected “Guyver.”   

If this sounds like an “Ultraman” adventure, you wouldn’t be far off the mark … and the ending leaves open a chance for more “Guyver” super-hero tales.   The Guyver turned out to be both fun and goofy (in a good way) … attracting a genre fan following over the years.   

This new 4K presentation will be a must-have on May 21 (move quickly, only 5,000 units are being manufactured).

As to bonus goodies, there is a brand new commentary featuring the filmmaking team of Screaming Mad George and Steve Wang, which is moderated by author Dom O’Brian (“Budget Biomorphs: The Making of The Guyver Films”).

The companion Blu-ray disc contains a video session with Screaming Mad George, the featurette titled “Suit Test” (with commentary by George and Wang), outtakes and a gag reel.

An additional bonus is a companion CD soundtrack.

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment Readies Two New 4K Ultra HD Releases With An Apr. 23 Street Date • Director David Ayer's The Beekeeper • Martin Scorsese's The Departed

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment doubles-up on new 4K Ultra HD announcements during the same week.   One, a new theatrical releases … and the other from the vaults!

Let’s start with the new theatrical arrival, which takes place on Apr. 23 as a full-spread physical media launch.   This would be director David Ayer’s The Beekeeper, starring Jason Statham.

The ARR for this Amazon MGM Studios production works out to 102 days and the domestic box office take currently amounts to $63.1 million.

All three editions — 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD — will be stand-alone presentations.  

Additionally, there appears to be no bonus features included with any of the physical media releases.

From the vaults — for the first time as a 4K Ultra HD — comes auteur filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s 2006 Best Picture winner, The Departed.   The delivery date is also Apr. 23.

Scorsese won Best Director and scriptwriter William Monahan’s adaptation of Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s 2002 film titled Internal Affairs captured the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Bonus features include the newly minted featurette titled “Guilt and Betrayal: Looking Into The Departed,” two archived featurettes — “Stranger than Fiction: The True Story of Whitey Bulger, Southie and The Departed” and “Crossing Criminal Cultures” — and nine deleted scenes (with introduction by Scorsese).

Writer/Director Bryce McGuire's Night Swim Arrives As Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack And DVD Product Offerings From Universal Pictures Home Entertainment On Apr. 09

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has circled Apr. 9 on the spring release calendar for the delivery of both DVD and Blu-ray editions of writer/director Bryce McGuire’s stay-in-the-shallow-end horror tale, Night Swim.

The ARR is 95 days and domestic box office receipts currently stand at $31.9 million.   

Universal continues to follow form with a premium VOD window between the theatrical launch and the subsequent arrival the physical media product offerings.   That was on Jan. 23, just 18 days into the theatrical run … illicit Blu-ray knockoffs were available within hours.

A second VOD window opens up on Mar. 12 with additional content.

As to bonus goodies, there is a commentary with filmmaker Bryce McGuire plus a quartet of featurettes — “Masters of Fear,” “Demons from the Depths,” “Into the Deep” and “Marco Polo.”

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Readies Four Series (Two Star Wars And Two Marvel Studios) For Delivery As 4K Ultra HD Product Offerings On Apr. 30

On the heels of trade press news about Sony Pictures Home Entertainment taking over the physical media distribution of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s extensive film and series library, there was an announcement this past week that four of the studio’s streaming series will be heading to the 4K Ultra HD marketplace on Apr. 30.  

Note, all four series will be also available as Blu-ray collections on the same date.

This could — and we say “could” — signal May 1 as the launch date for this newly fashioned distribution agreement (details have been sketchy at best).

Note number two, all of these series have long-sense been targeted by the “Helper” community (aka: pirates, bootleggers) as Blu-ray product offerings for genre fans who likely grew weary of waiting for Disney to act (quality of same is suspect).

What’s in the release mix for 4K?    This would be two Star Wars series and two from Marvel Studios … so let’s get to it.

First is (and this is of course a subjective call) the limited series, Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will be available as a double-disc set.

Bonus features include commentary by director Deborah Chow on the series finale, plus a trio of featurettes — “Duels of Fate: Obi-Wan vs. Vader,” “The Dark Times: Villains” and “Designing the Galaxy.”

Next is the three-disc presentation of Star Wars: Andor - The Complete First Season.

Bonus goodies here include the two-part featurettes “Ferrix Part 1: Imperial Occupation” and “Ferrix Part 2: Fight the Empire,” plus three additional production featurettes — “Aldhani: Rebel Heist,” “Coruscant: Whispers of Rebeillion” and “Narkina 5: One Way Out.”

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Presentation Of Director David O. Russell's American Hustle: 10th Anniversary Set For May 21

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment continues to deliver films to the 4K Ultra HD arena at a regular pace.   The latest is the May 21 “Limited Edition” 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack SteelBook presentation of director David O. Russell’s 2013 Best Pictures nominee, American Hustle: 10th Anniversary.

Not only did Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees, Silver Linings Playbook, Amsterdam, etc.) get a nomination for directing, but among the ten overall Oscar nominations there were four for acting — Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.

Bonus features include 11 deleted and extended scenes (about 15 minutes worth) and the archived featurette titled “The Making of American Hustle.”

Blue Underground Tabs May 21 As The Street Date For The 50th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Release Of Director Bob Clark's Deathdream

It is always a surprise, even amazing, that a “little” film from decades ago (five to be exact) bubbles to the top of film collector, film buff and genre fan stack for 4K Ultra HD treatment.

 Such is the case with the news this past week from Blue Underground, with sales and distribution support by MVD Entertainment Group.   This release news comes in the form of 50th anniversary 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack release of director Bob Clark’s 1974 horror gem, Deathdream (aka: Dead of Night), which will be available for genre fans to enjoy on May 21.

1974 was a big year for Bob Clark, who had teamed with Alan Ormsby for the cult favorite Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things — which started playing theatrically in June of 1972, but didn’t finish making the rounds (limited prints) until early 1973 (roughly nine months) — but it wasn’t Deathdream that made 1974 a big year.   

Rather, it was Clark’s direction and Ormsby writing for Black Christmas that ignited Clark’s filmmaking career (Porky’s, A Christmas Story, etc. would follow).

Instead, Deathdream followed the same theatrical release pattern as Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things.   Limited 35mm prints were “bicycled” around the country, often times with different distribution partners.   The film was reissued with different titles as late as 1976 in efforts to cash in on the success of Black Christmas.

Ultimately, it didn’t matter as Deathdream — with VHS, DVD and Blu-ray releases over the years — attracted the genre fan following that it so richly deserves.   On May 21 it arrives as the ultimate, a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition!!

Bonus features include not one, not two, but three separate commentary options.   There are two vintage commentaries, one each with Clark (who, along with his son, were murdered by a drunk driver in 2007) and Ormsby, while the third is new and features film historians Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson.

There’s an alternate opening, a new featurette titled “The First Andy,” plus four archived featurettes  — “Deathdreaming,” “Tom Savini: The Early Years,” “Flying Down to Brooksville,” and “Notes for a Homecoming” —  video sessions with Anya Liffey (aka: Anya Ormsby) and writer/make-up artist Alan Ormsby and more.
