Icarus Films Picks Aug. 6 For The Domestic DVD Debut Of writer/director Donato Carrisi’s The Girl In The Fog

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Icarus Films will be teaming up with France’s premiere film production and distribution company, Distrib Films, on Aug. 6 for the domestic DVD debut of Italian writer/director Donato Carrisi’s film adaptation of his own novel, The Girl in the Fog.

Regardless of the language that you speak, The Girl in the Fog is a film for those who love their mysteries.   Murder mysteries.   Detective thrillers.

The first mystery we encounter is that of a man involved in an auto accident, covered in blood, however as things turn out the blood is not his.   He ends up in the care of a psychiatrist by the name of Augusto Flores (played by Jean Reno) and the mystery of this man unfolds in flashback.

He is Detective Agente Vogel (Toni Servillo — One Man Up, Gorbaciof, The Confessions, etc.), who has been investigating the disappearance of Anna Lou Kastner, a sixteen year-old girl living in the remote Alpine village of Avechot.  The investigation has turned into a media circus of Vogel’s deliberate making (for reasons of his own rehabilitation) and he has cynically turned the focus of the girl’s disappearance on one of her teachers, Professor Loris Martini (Alessio Boni — The Goodbye Kiss, The Hush, Wild Blood, etc.).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The “collective” press is like a ravenous animal.   They are egged-on by the investigator, but to what purpose?

The teacher could be the killer.   And, then again, maybe not.  Indeed, it could be anyone in this close-knit village … and, for all we know, Vogel might even be involved.   In the meantime, it is her teacher who must dangle in the wind as the chief suspect.  And, another thing to consider, without a body, is the girl even dead?

The Girl in the Fog is a delicious mystery that unfolds like a puzzle.   It is up to the armchair detectives in the audience to decipher the clues and solve the mystery before the reveal in the final act.   Good hunting!

The Girl in the Fog is presented in Italian with English subtitles.

Arrow Video Restores Writer/Director Alfred Sole’s Alice, Sweet Alice For Delivery As A Blu-ray Product Offering On Aug. 6

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 2K restoration (from the original negative camera) of writer/director Alfred Sole’s Alice, Sweet Alice awaiting a Blu-ray release on Aug. 6.

Filmed in Paterson, New Jersey beginning in the summer of 1975, it would take a long and winding path to domestic theatres.   First, Sole need something like 18 months to finally finish the film and during that time his original release window evaporated.

What to do?   Alice, Sweet Alice went out under its original title, Communion, and worked the festival circuit ‘ Virgin Island Film Festival (a Gold Medal winner) and the Chicago Film Festival (nominated Best Picture) — in late 1976.   Hemdale then picked it up for distribution in the U.K.

Suddenly, there is interest in the domestic market for the film.   Communion was the debut film for a nine year-old girl by the name of Brooke Shields.   But in the meantime, Louis Malle’s Pretty Baby grabbed the spotlight and was heralded for Shields performance as a young New Orleans’ prostitute.   Allied Artists steps in and obtains the distribution rights, retitles the film to Alice, Sweet Alice and it is finally released theatrically in the United States in May of 1978.

A long and winding road, but it got there.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Alice, Sweet Alice is a Gothic murder mystery that focuses on who killed Alice’s sister, Karen (Brooke Shields), during her first communion.   Everything points to Alice (played by Paula E. Sheppard (Liquid Sky), but even as the evidence piles up we come to learn that someone else is actually doing the killings.  But who … and more importantly, why?

Bonus features include not one, but two commentary options.   The first is an archival commentary featuring filmmaker Alfred Sole, who is joined by editor Edward Salier.   The second is by FilmStruck’s Richard Harland Smith.

Additionally, there are deleted scenes, the TV cut of the film titled Holy Terror and a trio of featurettes — “First Communion: Alfred Sole Remembers Alice, Sweet Alice,” “Sweet Memories: Dante Tomaselli on Alice, Sweet Alice” and “Lost Childhood: The Locations of Alice, Sweet Alice.”

Paramount Home Media Readies Five-Disc DVD Set Of I Love Lucy: Colorized Collection For Release On Aug. 13

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media and CBS Home Entertainment will be celebrating Lucille Ball’s birthday on Aug. 13 (officially 108-years-young on Aug. 6) with the release of a five-disc DVD collection showing all 16 colorized I Love Lucy episodes.

The I Love Lucy: Colorized Collection is also being promoted by Fathom Events on Aug. 6 with a nationwide theatrical event that features five of the colorized episodes.

A sampling of some of the episodes included in the collection are: “Job Switching,” which fans know and love as “Lucy and the Chocolate Factory,” “The Million Dollar Idea,” (trying to market a secret family recipe turns into a disaster when every unit sold loses money), “Pioneer Women” (turn out the lights as Lucy and Ethel take on Ricky and Fred in a test of wills), “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (Lucy does a TV commercial for Vitameatavegamin) and “L.A. at Last!” (William Holden and the Brown Derby will never be the same).

Wild Eye Releasing Looks To Aug. 27 For The DVD Release Of Writer/Director Stephen Wolfe's Doll Factory

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Clowns get a bad rap … dolls, puppets and the like can, at times, be much scarier because they are the playthings of innocent children.

Wild Eye Releasing, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, makes this point on Aug. 27 with the DVD release of writer/director Stephen Wolfe’s Doll Factory.

Of course, Warner Bros. gets its turn with Clown terror a week later with the theatrical release of It Chapter Two … between these two it could be a healthy debate for genre fans.   Dolls — Chucky has been quite the terror — or Clowns (a sewer adventure with Pennywise anyone?), pick your terror.

With Doll Factory, we have a willing victim pool of Halloween revealers who find an ancient “book of spells” and do the naturally stupid thing by using it for fun and games.   With a backstory opening we already know that things will go south in a hurry.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe lovely Allison (Tracy Collins — Midnight Abyss) finds the book and convinces a half-dozen of her friends to head over to the abandon “doll factory” and have some fun.    It’s a bust.   Nothing.  Nada.   And Allison takes the heat for making everyone look foolish.

But just as they are about to head back to party central the place comes alive with a bunch of creepy looking dolls (what kid would be playing with these ghouls?) and poor Allison bites the dust.    When the carnage is done, only Kay (Nicole Elliott — The Devil's Hand) and Mark (Justin Herman — Midnight Abyss) manage to escape the factory alive.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyYour friends have just been slaughtered by creepy little dolls — who need souls to feed their master, Vegor (Patrick Sane — Sugar Mountain, Blood Corral) — and when you go to the local police they just laugh you off.   Come on, it’s Halloween, why don’t you kids grow up!!
If you saw Steve McQueen and Aneta Corsaut in the 1958 version of The Blob, then you have a pretty good idea as to what their modern versions, Kay and Mark, are up against.   The terror grows and no one believes them!

Fortunately, Darius Grumley (played by Boo Gay) had a run in with the dolls and Vegor years ago (the prologue) and brings Sheriff Bart Barclay (Chris Fender) and his Deputy, Donnie Harris (Larry Wade Carrell), around to his way of thinking … they join forces with Kay, her brother Melvin (Andy Palmer) and Mark to take on Vegor and his army of demonic dolls!    The fate of Goober, Texas … and for that matter, the world, hangs in the balance!!!

Bonus features include commentary from filmmaker Stephen Wolfe, a gag reel and a Behind-the-Scenes featurette.
