Mill Creek Entertainment's Becoming Evil: The Mafia Arrives On DVD On Aug. 11

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Mill Creek Entertainment has a four-disc DVD collection targeted for home entertainment consumers with an interest in The Godfather, The Boardwalk Empire, The Untouchables and all-things dealing with organized crime.

Titled Becoming Evil: The Mafia, consumers on Aug. 11 will get an in-depth look at the history of organized crime in the United States dating back to the 1800s.   Kicking off the collection is documentary filmmaker Kevin R. Hershberger’s six-part mini-series titled Gangster Empire - Rise of the Mob.

Hershberger takes the viewer through the history of “the Mob” with a focus on Prohibition, Atlantic City, Al Capone and the Roaring 20s, The St. Valentine’s Massacre, The Depression, J. Edgar Hoover and his “Public Enemies” list and a special focus on the Italian Mob and the real “Godfathers” of New York and finally out to Las Vegas for the new mobster “playground.”

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyNext up is the three-part series, Moonshine and the Dixie Mafia, which breaks down the rise of the so-called “Dixie Mafia” into a look at the world of Bourbon, the arrival of Prohibition and backwoods stills and the rise of stock car racing and back road smuggling at hectic speeds … and finally a look at the real-life Buford Pusser of Walking Tall fame, with insights provided by none other than his daughter, Dwana.

Rounding out the collection is the ten-part series, Vegas: The City the Mob Made.   Here we learn about Las Vegas before the arrival of organized crime, the “Golden Age” of Las Vegas, Las Vegas becoming a modern city, the decline of Mob Rule and more.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Wait!  Wait!  Wait, not done yet.   Mill Creek Entertainment’s Aug. 11 DVD release of Becoming Evil: The Mafia also includes a Digital download bonus, the nine-part mini-series titled Hollywood vs The Mob.

Each episode focuses on events in the real world and how Hollywood made movies to reflect those events.  Films like Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, Loan Shark, Marked Woman and The Black Godfather are discussed in this very different look at the rise of “The Mob.”

Oscilloscope Laboratories Tabs July 14 For The Release Of DVD And Blu-ray Editions Of Director Jack Henry Robbins' VHYes

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Oscilloscope Laboratories has some good times lined up for July 14 with the DVD and Blu-ray debut of director Jack Henry Robbins’ VHYes.

This quirky comedy got a limited theatrical (yeah, yeah, yeah, we all know by now what that means … with the Covid-19 and all) and, for the record, arrives in the home entertainment packaged media marketplace with an ARR of 179 days.

In VHYes, we are introduced to Ralph (Mason McNulty — Assimilate, 12 Pups of Christmas), a twelve-year-old kid in the time of VHS.   Yes, it’s 1987 and Ralph has just celebrated Christmas with the gift of a video camera and is eager to use it.

He needs a tape for his project and that’s where things go south.   Ralph finds his parent’s wedding tape and begins haphazardly recording over it … and that’s the “movie” that we are tuned into.   His “must-see” cinema verite, stream-of-conscious video playlist … recorded from hither and yon.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
A while back, Oscilloscope put out (May of 2018 to be exact) a DVD and Blu-ray release that was simply titled Road Movie.   It is a simply hilarious collection of Russian dash-cam videos … assembled together featuring wrecks and other things that happen randomly on the highways and back roads of Russia.  It is deceptively simple entertainment and yet totally mesmerizing in its viewing.

Robbins’ VHYes is the 1987-era equivalent.   Ralph quickly learns that he can record anything from late night TV and that’s when it gets truly weird (ignore that his father is beginning to ask questions about the source of his tape).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe entire movie is actually recorded on the same technology from the period and that makes it even stranger, if that is possible.   There is also a subtext that you begin to pick up on as the “movie” progresses … this technology will eventually become an addiction.

Bonus features include — are you ready for this — extended scenes with “Sexy Swedish Aliens” (we told you VHYes was weird) and two Sundance Film Festival short films from Jack Henry Robbins, Hot Winter and Painting with Joan (both equally weird and film festival winners as well).

MVD Entertainment Group Picks July 14 For Director Jeff Sandmann's Nothing Stays The Same: The Story Of The Saxon Pub

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The Saxon Pub in Austin, Texas is closed at the moment.   There is a notice on their website that reads, in part, “The Saxon Pub is working with our artists to reschedule shows canceled, due to COVID-19 … Please continue to check back here …”

For 30 years, beginning in 1990, the Saxon Pub was THE place to be in Austin for on-the-rise musicians.   During that period of time they have hosted over 22,000 musical performances … the main venue is simply called, “the listening room.”

MVD Entertainment Group has selected July 14 as the street date for documentary filmmaker Jeff Sandmann’s award-winning look at the history of this iconic venue, Nothing Stays The Same: The Story of The Saxon Pub.   For fans in need of Saxon Pub fix, this is it.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyFounded by Joe Ables, the Saxon Pub has grown, over the years, to be the destination point for music, especially for locals with talent to get a start before a live audience.   Included among the blend of local and Texas talent are the likes of Joe Ely, Bob Schneider, Patrice Pike, Guy Forsyth, Hector Ward, Carolyn Wonderland, The Resentments, Johnny Nicholas, W.C. Clark, Robynn Shayne and more.

Until the Saxon Pub re-opens, MVD’s Nothing Stays The Same: The Story of The Saxon Pub on DVD this coming July 14 is the next best thing!!

Director Malik Vitthal's Body Cam Heads Home On DVD From Paramount Home Media On July 14

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media has captured the domestic distribution rights to the Ace Entertainment/BET Films production of director Malik Vitthal’s supernatural thriller, Body Cam.   With theatres currently shutdown, this Mary J. Blige chiller will be heading to DVD on July 14.

Patrol cop Renee Lomito (Mary J. Blige — Mudbound, Rock of Ages, Prison Song) is on a seemingly routine patrol when her partner is killed in a bizarre way; gruesome.  No problem, her body cam recorded the entire incident.

She watches it and it appears that something out of the ordinary, perhaps without explanation occurred.   Here’s the catch, when she tries to share the footage with her superiors, nothing.   Nada.   She’s the only one that can see the ghostly image.

You guessed, she’s turned over to Dr. Lee (Han Soto) for a psych analysis … clearly she’s crazy or perhaps suffering from PDSD as a result of losing her partner.   There’s just one problem more cops start dying from the unexplained.

Without giving away the twist, let’s just say that a murder took place, some cops were involved … and this is payback.

Body Cam plays out like a haunted house thriller, except it takes place on the streets, dark alleys and businesses where Lomito patrols.   Death, sudden death, comes out of the blue … and when you least expect it.

Dark Force Entertainment's Film Restoration Of The Last Victim Arrives On Blu-ray On Aug. 25

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Dark Force Entertainment, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has selected Aug. 25 for the Blu-ray debut of director Jim Sotos’ The Last Victim.

Tanya Roberts was an unknown in 1975, long before her role as Julie Rogers on Charlie’s Angels, or as “Bond” girl Stacey Sutton in A View to a Kill … or even before The Beastmaster and Tourist Trap.

Her debut film was the PG-rated remake of writer/director Shaun Costello’s 1973 X-Rated adult film, Forced Entry (starring Harry Reems … which was kind of an adult homage to The Last House on the Left, which was released the previous year).  Titled The Last Victim, it got a quick in-and-out theatrical release through indie distributor Howard Mahler Films in October of 1975 and was then gone … forgotten.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAfter that, Roberts career grew and grew and so some enterprising indie picked it up, added some extra footage and re-released to take advantage of Tanya Roberts new-found stardom (Century International was the company, which was so far below the radar that it didn’t even make Box Office Magazine’s 1984 annual “Buyer’s Guide” of film distributors).

The new title was Forced Entry and suddenly Tanya Roberts has a co-star, Nancy Allen, who had a small part as one of the victims, but she too had moved from no-name to star with such films as Carrie, Blow Out and Dressed to Kill … so hype it!!

The story focuses on an auto mechanic by the name of Carl (Ron Max), who is as nice as nice can be to the customers and his little old lady neighbor, but if he spots an attractive young woman … rape and murder follow (Nancy Allen played a hitchhiker that Carl picks up).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
For most of the film we follow Carl’s crime spree, with time out taken here and there to check in on Nancy Ullman (Tanya Roberts) and her home life.   As luck would have it, her car needs some work and Carl is the guy.   He can’t help himself and the big climax is his assault on poor Mrs. Ullman …

Dark Force Entertainment has lined up a new 2K scan from the original film negative … plus the extra scenes from a remaining 35mm print and gives the viewer both viewing options — The Last Victim or Forced Entry.   Enjoy!!
