Mill Creek Entertainment Tabs May 12 For Two New Blu-ray Double Features

Mill Creek Entertainment will be putting smiles on the faces of collectors on May 12 with the release of two double-feature Blu-ray editions drawn from the film vaults of the Hollywood studios.   Priced-to-collect and available for the first time on Blu-ray … who could ask for more, so let’s get to it!!

The first double feature comes from Hollywood filmmaking showman, William Castle, before he took charge of his career and became one of the greatest self-promoters of all time … cinematically speaking. 

 

Titled Classic Crime Double Feature, this Blu-ray package includes Castle’s 1951 film release of Hollywood Story, which was based on the murder — yes, murder — of silent director William Desmond Taylor (renamed here as Franklin Ferrara) on the first of November in 1922 … the murder remains unsolved to this day, but boy, were there suspects aplenty.

Here Richard Conte is a would-be documentary filmmaker who decides to do a story on the murder — perhaps even solve it.   But secrets need to remained buried and “production” troubles plague Conte’s efforts to tell the story … including a new round of murders.   Julie Adams and Richard Egan co-star.

Teamed with Hollywood Story is director William Castle’s 1955 film release of New Orleans Uncensored, a gritty story of corruption on docks of “The Big Easy,” starring Arthur Franz, Beverly Garland and Michael Ansara, with Mike Mazurki included in the cast. 

The other double-feature on Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment are two classic Westerns with star power.   The first of these is director Budd Boetticher’s 1953 film release of The Man from the Alamo, starring Glenn Ford and Julie Adams, with Hugh O’Brien, Victor Jory, Chill Wills and Neville Brand in key roles.

The second half of this dynamite double-bill is director Robert Rossen’s 1959 classic, They Came to Cordura, with an all-star cast that includes Gary Cooper, Rita Hayworth, Van Heflin, Tab Hunter and Richard Conte.

Paramount Home Media Picks May 5 For The DVD Release Of Gunsmoke: The Final Season

They say that all good things must come to an end.   Last week, Paramount Home Media announced that Criminal Minds would be saying farewell on Apr. 14 with the DVD release of Criminal Minds: The Final Season (a mega-set collection of the entire series would also be available on Apr. 14).

This week we say goodbye to the 20-year run of the venerable Western TV series, Gunsmoke (September of 1955 through March of 1975), starring James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City … Gunsmoke: The Final Season on DVD — all 24 episodes — on May 5.  

The series was shot on 35mm film and all of the episodes from this sign-off season have been fully restored from the original film elements.

Miss Kitty (Amanda Blake) had left the series the previous year, so perhaps it was perhaps time for the traditional frontier Western to say its goodbyea.   Director Sam Peckinpah’s summer of 1969 film, The Wild Bunch, seems to have been the turning point — the transition from the “Old West” to the modern era.  You can only stay in Dodge City of 1870s and 1880s so long before the moving finger of time says … move on.  

 

Of note, Sam Peckinpah wrote 11 of the Gunsmoke episodes between 1955 and 1958 … how’s that for irony.

Indeed, filmmaker Don Siegel’s The Shootist, starring John Wayne, would arrive in theatres in 1976, one year after the departure of Gunsmoke, and its theme of the final days of a veteran gunman seemed to echo the dying of the “Old West” and the frontier.   Gunsmoke, as a television series, marked that passage of time quite well, and that is perhaps why some 35 years after its sign-off it is still remembered and celebrated.

Also available from Paramount Home Media on May 5 will be the mega-set of Gunsmoke: The Entire Series (all 635 episodes).

MVD Entertainment Group Bestows Marquee Collection Status On Sarah Michelle Gellar's Possession • DVD And Blu-ray Editions Available On Apr. 14

MVD Entertainment Group has targeted Apr. 14 for the Marquee Collection release of both DVD and Blu-ray editions of the directing team of Joel Bergvall and Simon Sandquist’s 2008 (2009) film suspense thriller, Possession, an English-language adaptation of the 2002 South Korean film titled Addicted.

This should have been a theatrical hit, but the production company, Yari Distribution, ran out of money after nearly two years of trying to get a finished product into release.   Just that simple … the result was an on-again, off-again direct to video launch by 20^th Century-Fox back in 2010 and it is now out of print.

Possession, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, Cruel Intentions, The Grudge … and as Buffy in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series) fits right into MVD Entertainment Group’s Marquee Collection promotional banner … too new to be cult, but not old enough to be catalog.

This is a creepy film, and deliberately so, that spins around the premise of a happily married young couple, Jess (Gellar) and Ryan (played by Michael Landes — Angel Has Fallen, Burlesque, Lakeview Terrace), lives being turned upside down as the result of a car accident.   

But, wait, car accidents do turn lives upside down by there very nature, but there is more going on here.   Ryan has a screw-up brother by the name of Roman (Lee Pace — Captain Marvel, Driven … as Thranduil in The Hobbit film series), who scares the bejesus out of Jess.   Finally something has to be done … and that’s when everything gets downright weird.

The storyline, while wildly improbable, has the two brothers involved in the same car crash and both in comas at the hospital.   Roman wakes up and insists that he is Ryan and that his brother’s essence (spirit, whatever) has been transferred to him.   Put yourself in Jess’ position, the man she is mortally terrified of claims to be her husband.   Is he?   

Sorry, we are not giving away the secret here … Apr. 14 for MVD’s Marquee Collection release of Possession to find out. 

Bonus features include roughly a half-hour’s worth of deleted and alternate scenes (as Yari Distribution ran out of money they cut and re-cut the film) and a making-of featurette.

Italian FIlmmaker Valerio Mieli's Ricordi Makes Its Domestic DVD Debut On Apr. 14

Icarus Films will be teaming up with Distrib Films for the domestic DVD debut of Italian filmmaker Valerio Mieli’s Venice Film Festival People’s Choice Award-winner (plus others), Ricordi?, on Apr. 14.

Imagine a graph, the type that genealogists prepare to show families.   In this box is such and such, the daughter or son of this couple.  In that box is this person and in another that person.   They are connected, but the only ones you remember are the people in the boxes that you know; have known … the others are just names; abstracts.

Mieli plays with time and memories in the romance of Lui (Luca Marinelli — Il Padre d'Italia, Don’t be Bad, Martin Eden, etc.) and Lei (Linda Caridi — Mamma + Mamma, Nome di Donna) — we never actually hear their names spoken — a seemingly perfectly matched couple.   We skip about in time, sometimes with tricks of the camera (the cinematography of Daria D'Antonio is every bit a part of the story as the storyline itself), where the eye expects to see one thing only to be toyed with by changing memories.

They meet, they fall in love … moments are relived and subtly change, depending on the mood; the wishful thoughts of a moment shared in time and space can be remembered in different ways as time passes.  We experience this with Lui and Lei … over time.

Indeed, Mieli’s Ricordi? is a beautiful, lyrical love story in once since, but it is also a discussion of life and memories and how the recall of those moments can seemingly change based on how one feels.   Relationships are not just one thing, but they change … the interaction between these two lovers, by its very nature, sets in motion those changes in perception and reality.   Mieli makes a point of that.

Ricordi? is a love story, an enjoyable love story, but told in such a way as to engage the viewer in a unique and, in the end, a very satisfying way.   The film is presented in Italian with English subtitles.
