Mill Creek Entertainment's 4K Film Restorations For Filmmaker Andy Sidaris' Malibu Express And Hard Ticket To Hawaii Ready For Blu-ray On Apr. 16

Mill Creek Entertainment announced this past week that its first wave of April priced-to-collect home entertainment products features not one, but two new 4K film restorations showcasing the work of iconic action filmmaker Andy Sidaris!

Sidaris, who found fame as the director of Wide World of Sports (and the use of his audience-pleasing “Honey Shot”) always found a way to combine solid action storylines with the allure of former Penthouse and Playboy centerfolds, a combination that found a loyal film audience and over the years earned him something of a cult following.

Both of these new film restorations will be available as Blu-ray releases on Apr. 16 and both SKUs include Digital Copy.

First up is his 1985 film release of Malibu Express, which finds private investigator Cody Abilene (Darby Hinton — former child actor who starred as Israel Boone in Fess Parker’s hit TV series of the 1960s, Daniel Boone, plus such films as Without Warning, Angels' Brigade, Black Oak Conspiracy, etc.) being “interviewed” by the Contessa Luciana (played by none other than Sybil Danning — Naughty Nymphs, as Eugenie in The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers: Milady's Revenge, The Concorde ... Airport '79, Chained Heat and in the same year as Malibu Express she starred as Stirba in Howling II: ... Your Sister Is a Werewolf) and when he meets her “standards” he is hired to investigate the Chamberlain family.   

Seems like a simple enough assignment, but it gets complicated very quickly when Lady Lillian Chamberlain’s (Niki Dantine) household ends up being the center of Russian spy activity, among other things.   Cody needs to take plenty of time to “investigate” Lady Lillian’s daughter, Anita (Shelley Taylor Morgan — My Tutor, Scarface, etc.), the niece, (played by Playboy’s “Playmate of the Month,” Lorraine Michaels) and her fetish-inspired husband … and keep a sharp eye out for the “muscle,” the family’s chauffer, Shane (Brett Baxter Clark ­— Bachelor Party, Eye of the Eagle, etc.).

When things get tough — or he needs a “timeout” — Cody can always count on his cop friend Beverly (Lori Sutton — Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Looker, etc.) and racecar aficionado June Khnockers (played by Playmate Lynda Wiesmeier — Private School, Teen Wolf) to help out.   

Malibu Express (which, by the way, is the name of Cody’s boat … which also sees plenty of “action”) delivers at all levels … action, fun (some great gags) and plenty of “eye candy.”   The plot is a more of a mechanism to move things along than a mystery that actually has to be solved by Cody!!

Bonus features include a first-time HD widescreen presentation of the film, a vintage introduction by the late Andy Sidaris and 40-minutes worth of behind-the-scenes featurettes (which are worth a look-see on their own “merits).

Next in line, chronologically speaking in filmmaker Andy Sidaris’ famed “Bullets, Bombs and Babes” or “Girls, Guns and G-Strings” series of cult action films, is the spring of 1987 film release of Hard Ticket To Hawaii.

Something sinister is happening on the Hawaiian island of Moloka‘i … it seems that drug lord Seth Romero (Rodrigo Obregon) has plans to flood the islands with drugs and use his diamond smuggling operation to finance the scheme.    

The first two DEA agents dispatched to investigate were murdered by Romero and his henchmen, so bombshells Donna (Playmate Dona Spier — Savage Beach, Picasso Trigger, etc.) and Taryn (Playmate Hope Marie Carlton — Slumber Party Massacre III, Terminal Exposure, etc.) go undercover to crack the case.  They are transport pilots … who can actually fly planes and are not afraid of hauling some very deadly cargo.  Oh, and passengers too.  

During one of these flights they uncover a stash of Romero’s diamonds and all hell breaks loose.   Soon fellow agents Rowdy Abilene (played by The Bold and the Beautiful’s Ronn Moss … 25 years on the soap as Ridge Forrester from 1987 through 2012) and Jade (Harold Diamond — Rambo III) are dispatched to help the ladies and bring Romero to justice!   The “action” is non-stop!!

Bonus features for Hard Ticket to Hawaii include a HD widescreen presentation of the film, an introduction by Sidaris’ and vintage behind-the-scenes featurettes.

Paramount Home Media Picks Apr. 9 For The DVD Rollout Of Ray Donovan: Season Six

Abby is gone, Mickey is behind bars and Ray took a suicidal death-dive into the East River as season five of Ray Donovan came to a conclusion.   It was obviously the end of the line for Hollywood’s notorious “fixer.”   Done.   Finished.   

Wait!  Wait!  Wait!   Not so fast … in the tradition of Hollywood’s glorious serial cliffhangers of the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s our anti-hero Ray Donovan miraculously survives his plunge into the murky depths of the East River and is rescued by none other than a member of the NYPD, officer Sean “Mac” McGrath (Domenick Lombardozzi — Boardwalk Empire, Rosewood, The Wire, etc.).

Ray is none too happy about being brought back to life … a love/hate relationship develops between the two.  

Naturally Ray wants out of the business, but power player Samatha Winslow (Susan Sarandon) has other ideas … and soon enough Ray is back at it.   As so too are Terry (Eddie Marsan), Bunchy (Dash Mihok), Daryll (Pooch Hall), Bridget (Kerris Dorsey)  … and even Mickey (Jon Voight) finds a way out of the slammer and he is out to settle some scores.

Showtime gave a Christmas present to fans with the Dec. 20 announcement in the trades that a seventh season will begin shooting this spring in New York City!!

Arrow Video's 2K Film Restoration Of Director Richard Friedman’s Scared Stiff On Blu-ray Apr. 23

During the Halloween promotional season of 1987 indie theatrical specialist, International Film Marketing brought the Manson International production of Scared Stiff to market.  The theatrical launch was limited and it was soon available on VHS from CBS/Fox (as memory recalls), but damned if we can find any legitimate DVD release in the intervening years.

So it certainly piqued our attention when Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, announced this past week that director Richard Friedman’s Scared Stiff will be getting a new 2K restoration for release on Blu-ray this coming Apr. 23.

We just checked with the amazon.com web site and a vintage VHS copy is fetching $125, so what are you waiting for … get those orders in and get ready to be Scared Stiff on Blu-ray in April!!!

David Young (Andrew Stevens) is a psychiatrist who buys an old antebellum mansion in Charlesburg (filming was actually in and around the Miami area) and settles in with his rock star girlfriend, Kate Christopher (played by Mary Page Keller in her film debut), who is recovering from a nervous breakdown.

It seems that the house has a history and in no time the very “receptive” Kate is seeing ghosts … if she was bonkers before her arrival at her new digs, you can only imagine the hell she faces with voodoo zombies stalk the halls!!

Bonus goodies for the Blu-ray release of Scared Stiff include a newly-prepared commentary option featuring director Richard Friedman (Doom Asylum, Death Mask, Ground Zero, Christmas Crime Story, etc.), who is joined by producer Dan Bacaner and film historian Robert Ehlinger, plus a new video session with composer Billy Barber, an image gallery and the documentary titled “Mansion of the Doomed: The Making of Scared Stiff.”

Icarus Films Expands March Release Calendar - Monsieur & Madame Adelman (Mar. 12), Two Films by Anne Georget (Mar. 12) And Impulso (Mar. 19)

Icarus Films, with documentary filmmaker Fabrizio Terranova’s Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival and Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó’s surreal sci-fi-themed tale, Jupiter’s Moon, already in place for delivery on Mar. 5, expanded its March release calendar this past week with announcements for three new DVD product offerings.

Teaming with France’s Distrib Films, Icarus Films looks to Mar. 12 for the domestic DVD debut of actor-turned-writer/director Nicolas Bedos’ César Awards nominated Monsieur & Madame Adelman (Best Actress nomination for Doria Tillier and Best First Film for Bedos).

Sarah (Doria Tillier — Nothing to Hide) and Victor (Nicolas Bedos — Love is in the Air, The Easy Way Out, etc.) serve as something of a metaphor for the history of France since the 1970s.   Told in flashback, the couple were married for some 45 years … through the good times and bad times; the ups and downs that life serves-up.   

Yes, 45 years together and then Victor is gone and it is left to Sarah to tell their story ... he was a famous writer, a member of the French Academy, and she lived in his shadow.   But it is a journalist — following his burial — who had an appointment to meet with Victor, who now uses the opportunity to interview Sarah instead.

As Monsieur & Madame Adelman unfolds — through chapters  — we learn that in the end it was her, Sarah, who made Victor the success he was.   The irony in the background player being the one with the greater drive, who endures … it seems that Victor could be quite the bastard and still charming and loving.

Monsieur & Madame Adelman is presented in French with English subtitles.

Also making its way to DVD on Mar. 12 from Icarus Films is the release titled Two Films by Anne Georget, which features her heartfelt 2015 documentary, Imaginary Feasts and the recently completely companion piece, Mina’s Recipe Book.  

Imagine, for a moment, that you are a prisoner at Ravensbrück, a Nazi concentration camp, or Auschwitz or Terezin just outside of Prague … it doesn’t matter which hell hole.   They all have one thing in common, the prisoners murdered and the prisoners being starved to death.   

Imaginary Feasts is the story of these starving prisoners who gathered together to share recipes in, as one put it, “Our dream kitchen behind barb wire.”   It was an act of defiance … discovery of such secret recipe books could mean death.   It was an act of hope, of dreams that some day might come to pass and these recipes would be used once again.   

The companion film Mina’s Recipe Book is the story of one such book written in Terezin 1944 … 13 women shared one room in the camp and only one would walk out alive.   To pass the time they shared recipes and one by one they died.   It took 25 years for the recipes Mina wrote down to be reunited with her family, including her grandson, who survived Terezin.   That journey is told here.

Imaginary Feasts is presented in French with English subtitles, while Mina’s Recipe Book is presented in German with English subtitles.

Turning to Mar. 19, The KimStim Collection will be teaming up with Icarus Films for the DVD debut of director Emilio Belmonte’s Impulso.

If the world of dance and choreography is your thing, then the name Rocío Molina is no stranger to you and Belmonte’s Impulso will certainly be on your must-see come Mar. 19.   But for those outside this select circle, Belmonte’s film introduces us to this young Spanish choreographer and Flamenco dance sensation (legend has it that Mikhail Baryshnikov fell to his knees in her dressing room in homage to her dancing talent), who has been at it since the age of three … she is now just 35 and is easily the most influential force in the world of Flamenco these days.

Belmonte’s film follows her preparation on the lead up to her creation of a new dance show during the 2016/17 season at the famed Chaillot National Theatre in Paris.

Impulso is presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
