Indican Pictures' Selects Sept. 23 For The DVD Release of Writer/Director Kevin James Barry's Sci-Fi Thriller Serena And The Ratts

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Indican Pictures has scored a major indie sci-fi release for the domestic DVD market with the announcement that writer/director Kevin James Barry’s Serena and the Ratts will be heading to retail on Sept. 23.

Serena Donovan (Evalena Marie — Remains, Dark Feed, Visionary, etc.) is sort of “Le Femme Nakita,” a hired-gun; an assassin.   From the looks of her these days she’s been a busy girl … “The Boss” (Jonathan Thomson) gives her assignments and she’s out there to get it done.   He is a one-man crime wave, ruthless and with a couple of dozen professionals … and she counts as one of his best.

Here’s the twist, her latest target is a bunch of nerds headed by “The Professor” (Jeremy Bates) who have come up with a method for time travel and they have some very ambitious plans — at least on the surface.   Go back and kill Hitler and change the world.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Things become something of a tangled blur as her assignments (kills) become undone and things don’t seem quite right.   Which leads her to switch sides and join “The Ratts,” which have their own agenda and she, in many ways, is a useful tool.  Since time is being messed with, “The Boss” hits upon the plan of sending out all of his assassins in a blitz attack … whip them all out in one bold move.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyIt falls to Serena to stop him!   Serena and the Ratts is a bold, even original sci-fi outing, that also blends in plenty of action … and yes, there’s always the eye-candy of Serena, who even looks good covered in blood and bleary-eyed.

Also getting a Sept. 23 DVD debut date is documentary filmmakers Doug Hoffman and Seyi Sodimu’s 91 Bullets in a Minute.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
With the recent events in Ferguson, Missouri dominating the headlines, the timing by Indican Pictures for this look at the police shooting cases revolving around Sean Bell (November 25, 2006) and Amadou Diallo (February 4, 1999).

Hoffman and Sodimu examine both cases and the aftermath of the two infamous shootings … 50 and 41 shots were fired at the two men.   Two sides to the story and yet, despite it all (courts and more), there was no clear resolution in either case … some would say in response, “No Justice!” “No Peace!”

Silver Screen Legends: Hedy Lamarr DVD Collection From The Film Chest On Sept. 30

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Film collectors, film buffs and fans of Hedy Lemarr will have plenty to take notice of on Sept. 30 as that is the street that the Film Chest has selected for its latest DVD collectible (in cooperation with Synergy Entertainment).

Priced at just $17.98, this four-disc/four-film collection is titled Silver Screen Legends: Hedy Lamarr and includes four of her starring roles, including her first English-language and major studio debut, director John Cromwell’s 1938 drama, Algiers.

This remake of novelist Henri La Barthe’s Pépé le Moko (1937, French-language version starring Jean Gabin and Mireille Balin) was shot on location (the arrival of World War II would put an end to that) and teamed Hedy Lamarr as Gaby with Charles Boyer as Pépé le Moko.

The result was that Algiers was box office hit and earned four Oscar nominations — Best Actor for Charles Boyer, plus Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Gene Lockhart), Best Cinematography (James Wong Howe) and Best Art Direction (Alexander Toluboff).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyNext on the list is director Edgar G. Ulmer’s 1946 film noir thriller, The Strange Woman, teaming Lamarr with George Sanders and Louis Hayward (Gene Lockhart is also counted among the impressive cast).

The following year, 1947, Hedy Lamarr was cast in a film remake of Margaret Ayer Barnes and Edward Sheldon’s stage play, Dishonored Lady.   Her co-stars were Dennis O’Keefe and John Loder and direction was handled by Robert Stevenson (Oscar-nominated in 1964 for his direction of Mary Poppins).

Lastly, director Richard Wallace’s 1948 film release of Let's Live a Little is a change of pace for Lamarr … after dramas and film noirs, a romantic comedy.   Robert Cummings and Anna Sten are her co-stars.

Oscilloscope Laboratories' Portrait of Jason: Project Shirley, Volume 2 Heads To DVD On Nov. 11

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Triibbey
Milestone Films, in association with Oscilloscope Laboratories, will release DVD and Blu-ray editions of Portrait of Jason: Project Shirley, Volume 2 on Nov. 11.

Shirley Clarke, born of wealth and privilege, educated and a devotee of modern dance might have lived out her life with her interest in dance as nothing more than a passion, a love, but nothing more.   But in the mid-1950s she took up film — legend has it that it was for therapy — and at that she did excel, which included an Oscar nomination in 1960 for her short film, Skyscraper.

On a December evening in 1966 filmmaker Shirley Clarke set down with Jason Holliday, a gay black man with dreams of becoming a performer.   For 12-hours Clarke filmed this man as he spoke of his life, his desires, frustrations … the result was Portrait of Jason, one of the most celebrated cinéma vérité films of the period.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TriibbeyA restored version of this landmark film is the centerpiece of this remarkable collection that also includes “The Lost Confrontation,” “Where’s Shirley?,” “Jason in Color!,” “Jason: Before and After,” “Butterfly” and “Shirley Clarke in Underground New York,” plus audio outtakes and a Pacifica Radio interview with Shirley Clarke (1967).

Also included is the audio from a 1967 album titled “Jason Holliday Comedy Album.”
