Indican Pictures has
scored a major indie sci-fi release for the domestic DVD market with the
announcement that writer/director Kevin James Barry’s Serena and the Ratts will
be heading to retail on Sept. 23.
Serena Donovan (Evalena
Marie — Remains, Dark Feed, Visionary, etc.) is sort
of “Le Femme Nakita,” a hired-gun; an assassin. From the looks of her these days she’s been
a busy girl … “The Boss” (Jonathan Thomson) gives her assignments and she’s out
there to get it done. He is a one-man
crime wave, ruthless and with a couple of dozen professionals … and she counts
as one of his best.
Here’s the twist, her
latest target is a bunch of nerds headed by “The Professor” (Jeremy Bates) who
have come up with a method for time travel and they have some very ambitious
plans — at least on the surface. Go
back and kill Hitler and change the world.
Things become something
of a tangled blur as her assignments (kills) become undone and things don’t
seem quite right. Which leads her to
switch sides and join “The Ratts,” which have their own agenda and she, in many
ways, is a useful tool. Since time is
being messed with, “The Boss” hits upon the plan of sending out all of his
assassins in a blitz attack … whip them all out in one bold move.
It falls to Serena to
stop him! Serena and the Ratts is a
bold, even original sci-fi outing, that also blends in plenty of action … and
yes, there’s always the eye-candy of Serena, who even looks good covered in
blood and bleary-eyed.
Also getting a Sept. 23
DVD debut date is documentary filmmakers Doug Hoffman and Seyi Sodimu’s 91
Bullets in a Minute.
With the recent events in
Ferguson, Missouri dominating the headlines, the timing by Indican Pictures for
this look at the police shooting cases revolving around Sean Bell (November 25,
2006) and Amadou Diallo (February 4, 1999).
Hoffman and Sodimu
examine both cases and the aftermath of the two infamous shootings … 50 and 41
shots were fired at the two men. Two
sides to the story and yet, despite it all (courts and more), there was no
clear resolution in either case … some would say in response, “No
Justice!” “No Peace!”
