The Film Detective Picks July 29 For The Release Of DVD And Blu-ray Editions Of The 4K Film Restoration Of The Sin Of Nora Moran

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The Pre-Code world of Hollywood is visited on July 29 with the 4K film restoration of director Phil Goldstone’s 1933 shocker, The Sin of Nora Moran, starring Zita Johann (The Mummy) as the doomed titled character.

Explicit, especially for audiences of the time, we know from the get-go that Nora is no longer with us, she was sentenced to death and electrocuted.   Using a film technique called “narratage,” which had been developed by Preston Sturges earlier in the same year, we learn of Nora’s sad fate through a series of “jump-around” flashbacks.

The governor’s widow, Edith Crawford (played by Claire Du Brey, a prolific character actress, whose career began in silent films and went well into the 1950s) has found love letters among her dead husband’s belongings and takes these to her brother, John Grant (Alan  Dinehart — Charlie Chan at the Race Track, Dante's Inferno, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, etc.), who just happens to be the District Attorney.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
From this point, the narrative jumps around in time and we, as the audience, slowly piece together what happened to land poor Nora in the death house.   And what a story it is … rape, blackmail, murder and the death of an innocent woman (with a twist).   Pre-Code Hollywood movies, such as The Sin of Nora Moran, pulled no punches.

As for Nora, played by Zita Johann, she is both sexy and vulnerable … and at times foolish.   Johann, herself, had the breakout role as Helen Grosvenor in The Mummy, opposite Boris Karloff, the previous year, she then worked one more year in Hollywood and exited back to the stage.

Bonus features include commentary from film historian and producer Samuel M. Sherman and a newly-produced documentary on the career of Zita Johann.

Oscilloscope Laboratories Tabs July 28 For The Release Of DVD And Blu-ray Editions Of The Infiltrators

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Oscilloscope Laboratories announced this past week that the filmmaking team of Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera’s intense docu-thriller, The Infiltrators, will be makings its way to the home entertainment packaged media marketplace on July 28 as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings.

“Docu-thriller,” exactly what is that?   In the case of The Infiltrators it is a story telling technique that is part documentary — an actual true story — that is blended with a dramatic re-telling of those portions of the story that the filmmakers could not possibly access.

The film opened at Sundance in the “Best of Next” competition and grabbed not one, but two awards — the NEXT Innovator Award and the Audience Award.   It was a stunning debut.   For a solid year The Infiltrators worked the film festival circuit, piling up more awards and rave reviews.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Let’s pause here for a second, because to understand the story being told in The Infiltrators, you have to park the politics at the door.   A good example, is writer/director Jonás Cuarón’s 2015 film, Desierto, where we are introduced to illegal aliens, the coyotes and the process of smuggling these hapless human beings across a terrifying no-man’s land and into the country.   A crazed local, who has had too much of it, snaps and goes on a hunting spree.   We, as an audience, quickly identify with the illegals.

Now The Infiltrators is not near as deadly, there’s no crazed killer, but the story is just as dramatic.   There’s corruption, terror and a system that is broken … a system that no one wants to fix, which simply makes it more corrupt.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAt the heart of our “real world” story is Claudio Rojas, who has been in an out of the system for as long as anyone can remember.   He goes to court, they hold him in detention, time goes by, and then they cut him loose … the cycle repeats.

“Currently,” he is the Broward Transitional Center in Florida (when our story begins), which is a privately funded detention center, which defines corruption.   For profit, what incentive is there to ever get anything resolved?   Into this world comes the political action group, the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, and real-world activist Marco Saavedra, whose goal is to get picked up by the Border Patrol and tossed into Broward.   We see this actually take place.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Once inside, the real Marco is replaced — for dramatic purposes — by actor Maynor Alvarado, and we see what happens to Marco while he is in the Broward Transitional Center and how he is able to find Claudio.   What goes on inside is like a dysfunctional hell.    The film jumps back and forth between the documentary and dramatic to tell this story.

Of note, Claudio got kicked loose again, was an advisor on the film — filling in details, going over things with the actors and real people — the Border Patrol got wind of this and scooped him up again.   That, ironically, opened up a whole new can of worms — free speech issues; First Amendment.

The Infiltrators is about this corrupt, dysfunctional system … politics aside, the story is a real eye-opener.

Oscilloscope has the extended director’s cut of the film presented here, plus there is a making-of featurette as a bonus.

Mill Creek Entertainment Sets Blu-ray Debut Of Snow White: A Tale Of Terror For Release On Sept. 15

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Mill Creek Entertainment has a stunning, first-time-on-Blu-ray release lined up for consumers to enjoy on Sept. 15.   Not only is it making its Blu-ray debut, but Mill Creek has set the SRP at a very attractive priced-to-collect $14.99 (and that’s before discounts at your various retail options).

Directed by Michael Cohn (Interceptor, When the Bough Breaks), Snow White: A Tale of Terror was originally slated for a theatrical release.   It had been filmed in and around Prague in the Czech Republic, with Mike Southon (Replicant, the Air Bud movies, etc.) handling the cinematography (he was nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers for his work here), but during the production Polygram Filmed Entertainment was beginning to breakdown and would eventually fold into Universal Pictures).

So instead of getting a theatrical push, Snow White: A Tale of Terror ended up on Showtime in late August of 1997.   The DVD format had just been launched and so a VHS and DVD day/date push was slated for November of 1998, but the DVD was delayed until December 8, delayed again until January 12 and finally made its way to the DVD marketplace on January 26, 1999 at the bargain price of just $29.95.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The film itself proceeded to snag three Emmy nominations, including one for the film’s star, Sigourney Weaver, who is the ever-increasingly wicked stepmother (with her deadly magic mirror), and two more for Makeup and Consume Design.

So if you missed this Sigourney Weaver gem way back then (or the re-issue by Universal under its own label), here’s your chance to finally get a high-def up-grade at a sweet price from Mill Creek Entertainment.   Mark the date, Sept. 15, on your calendar now!!

MVD Entertainment Group To Release A Director's Cut Of Filmmaker Tom DeCillo's Delirious On Both DVD And Blu-ray On Oct. 13

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Insanity, celebrity and petty revenge plots all make for a devilishly wicked black comedy that MVD Entertainment Group has scooped up for delivery as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings on Oct. 13.

This would be writer/director Tom DeCillo’s Delirious, starring Steve Buscemi as Les Galantine, a big-ego celebrity stalker — better known as paparazzi.   He’s in the business of taking pictures of stars, who are often famous for being famous, which, in some odd way, rubs off on him.

He recruits a somewhat simple homeless guy by the name of Toby (Michael Pitt — Funny Games, The Dreamers … as James 'Jimmy' Darmody in Boardwalk Empire) to be his assistant.   It’s a win-win for both of them — for Toby it is something to do (and a roof over his head, even it means sleeping in Les’ closet), for Les, it’s free help.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
But things take a turn for the weird when Les’ picture-taking escapades cross paths with casting agent Dana (Gina Gershon), who sees Toby as a potential client.   This all happens when Les is doing his paparazzi thing on up-and-coming starlet, K'Harma Leeds (played by Alison Lohman — Drag Me to Hell, Matchstick Men), who makes eye-contact with Toby … and then one thing leads to another and before you know it Toby is on his way to being celebrity-famous.

Les is stunned.  All his work, his career, and suddenly his “apprentice” is on his way to being famous.   Something has to be done!!

Delirious, and make no mistake about this, is Steve Buscemi’s movie.   He is absolutely on his game.  He’s living in a very lonely world — like a hungry cat looking in the window of a fish market.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The film plays both as a black comedy and as a satire on the entertainment industry, a business where so many clueless people are famous for simply being famous ... and they need people like Les to get them there, and yet they resent him as he does his job.

First time on Blu-ray, Delirious is presented as the never-before-seen “director’s cut” of the film, complete with commentary from filmmaker Tom DiCillo (Living in Oblivion, Johnny Suede), the featurette titled “Stalking Delirious,” the Alison Lohman music video, “Shove It,” and three “promotional” short films — “Casting Michael Pitt,” “Steve Buscemi is Pissed” and “The Gina Gershon Sex Tape.”

Director David Mambouch's Maguy Marin: Time To Act On DVD From Icarus Films This Coming Aug. 18

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Icarus Films will joining forces with France’s premiere film distribution company, Distrib Films, on Aug. 18 for the domestic DVD debut of documentary filmmaker David Mambouch’s Maguy Marin, Time to Act.

Maguy Marin, born to Spanish parents — who had fled their native land after the Spanish Civil War — in Paris, she established herself as a dancer, having studied at the Toulouse Conservatory and then under the tutelage of Nina Wyrubowa in Paris (among others).   By the 1980s Maguy Marin had transformed into a choreographer, with a flair for the modern and the works of none other than writer Samuel Beckett.

Mambouch’s focus — and he is no stranger to Marin, having collaborated with her as a sound designer and performer himself — here is on Marin’s masterwork, “May B” — sculptures; clay figures … coming to life.   We get insights into Maris thought her comments, plus the many dancers and technicians that have performed her amazing dance productions over the years.

A mesmerizing artist, her life and work, is captured perfectly by Mambouch’s documentary, which will certainly thrill fans of Marin’s work, but Maguy Marin, Time to Act is also a film that non-dance audiences can enjoy as well.

Maguy Marin, Time to Act is presented in French with English subtitles.
