Paramount Home Media Picks Nov. 19 For The Release Of DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Editions Of Dora And The Lost City of Gold

On the surface it sounds like a dumb idea.   We are talking about a live-action movie featuring Dora the Explorer, the star of the long-running Nickelodeon animated series for kids.

Director James Bobin’s Dora and the Lost City of Gold defied expectations and turned out to be a real audience pleaser, the success of which was largely propelled by word of mouth during its theatrical run. 

Paramount Home Media announced this past week that on Nov. 19 consumers will be able to purchase either DVD or Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions of this fun-filled action adventure.   

The ARR for that date works out to 102 days and domestic turnstiles clicked to the tune of $59.4 in box office receipts.

The key to Dora and the Lost City of Gold’s success was threefold.   First, the selection of a teenage Dora in the form of Isabela Moner (Instant Family, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Transformers: The Last Knight, etc.) was inspired.   She gives Dora both a three-dimensional personality and a sense of fun, and yet still maintains the same look and feel of the perpetually young animated character (a six-year old version is played in early scenes by newcomer Madelyn Miranda).   

Second, the script is fun, filled adventure and packed with “Dora” touches — Boots (voiced by Danny Trejo), Packback (Sasha Toro), Map (Marc Weiner) and Diego is a properly off-putting teenage (played by Jeff Wahlberg) who eventually comes around.   

And third, Dora and the Lost City of Gold was presented in a style that would not be offensive to any parent wandering in with the little ones thinking that it would be Dora as her traditional “animated” explorer self.    

Bonus goodies included a blooper reel, deleted and extended scenes and four featurettes — “All About Dora,” “Can You Say Pelicula?,” “Dora In Flower Vision” and “Dora's Jungle House.”

Documentary Filmmaker Liam Barker’s Voice Of The Eagle: The Enigma Of Robbie Basho On DVD And Blu-ray From MVD Entertainment Group On Dec. 13

Back in late-1960s and early 70s the world of music became enamored with Ravi Shankar (Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock and the Concert for Banladesh), but nearly a decade earlier a college student, who was into folk music, happened upon the music of Ravi Shankar and forged his own unique interpretation of the sounds with just a 12-string acoustic guitar.   His name was Robbie Basho.

MVD Entertainment Group will be bringing documentary filmmaker Liam Barker’s Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho, a look at the life and legend of recording artist and innovator Robbie Basho, to the home entertainment marketplace on Friday, Dec. 13, as both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions.

He didn’t limit his music to folk and the sounds of Shankar, but during his formative college years he immersed himself in the world of Japanese music, even to the point of changing his name — he was an adopted orphan — from Daniel Robinson, Jr. (a name given to him by his adopted father) to Robbie Basho (a combination of Robinson and the 17^th Century Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō).

Between 1965 and 1984 he recorded an amazing 14 albums (plus a “best of”), mostly for fellow guitar enthusiast  John Fahey’s boutique Takoma Records … and then died in a bizarre visit to a chiropractor at just 45 years of age.

Robbie Basho might have gone unnoticed in the world of contemporary music, except we have Barker’s documentary and other “American primitive guitar” movement disciples, such as Richard Osborne.   His music is now just being “rediscovered” via labels like Thompson Square with reissues and new compilations of his “visionary” works.  The timing of these DVD and Blu-ray product offering by MVD Entertainment Group is spot-on.

As to bonus materials included with the Dec. 13 home entertainment launch of Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho, the DVD includes about a half-hour’s worth of additional material, while the Blu-ray SKU comes packed with two DVD bonus discs containing a whopping 424 minutes worth of additional video sessions (we really like that … too often bonus footage along these lines are just trims) with the likes of Pete Townshend, William Ackerman, Henry Kaiser and Country Joe McDonald, plus archived performances of Robbie Basho’s work.

Icarus Films Targets Nov. 19 For The Domestic DVD Debut Of Chilean Filmmaker Dominga Sotomayor-Castillo’s Too Late To Die Young

The KimStim Collection will be joining Icarus Films on Nov. 19 for the domestic home entertainment packaged media rollout of Chilean filmmaker Dominga Sotomayor-Castillo’s film festival and arthouse favorite, Too Late to Die Young.

Unless you were fortunate enough to catch the film’s limited arthouse showcase during the early summer of this year, or happened upon one of the festival screenings that began in August of 2018 at various venues around the world (Locarno Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Göteborg Film Festival … and more), the Nov. 19 DVD release date will be your first opportunity to enjoy Too Late to Die Young.   

For the record, the ARR for that mid-November street date works out to a leisurely 172 days.

Chile, unlike in the northern hemisphere, during the Christmas and New Year’s period is at the height of the summer months.   It is here, during these days of summer at the end of 1989 that we join teenagers Sofia (Demian Hernández — Víctima Potencial) and Lucas (Antar Machado) in the countryside, far from the tumultuous events of the fall of the military dictatorship of Pinochet.   

It is a moment in time that Sotomayor-Castillo (Thursday Till Sunday, La Isla) captures in this “drawn-from-her-own-experiences” coming-of-age story — both for the young protagonists and a country that is on the cusp of change.   

The families, who are artists and educated, are on vacation in a remote area (think: rustic), well away from the events that are unfolding in Santiago and the changes that were taking place at the time … with still more changes to come.  It was a time of both hope and uncertainty and this is what plays out in this idyllic setting.

Lucas is enamored with the free-spirit Sofia, they are friends, both just 16, but she is already looking for something more.   This comes in the form of an “older” chap by the name of Ignacio (Matías Oviedo — Sr. Larraín), who has a “chopper,” which allows Sofia the freedom to scoot about the countryside.  To be rebellious.

Another member of Sotomayor-Castillo’s collection of young people on holiday is ten-year old Clara (Magdalena Tótoro), who is perhaps too young to understand the excitement and concerns of the adults.   She, however, is more concerned with finding her missing dog … which will be an important element in the week-long “holiday” tale that unfolds between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

There will other events that will take place in this far-from-home setting that will foreshadow the difficulties of tossing out a dictatorship after 20 long years … what comes next and how do you prepare for it?   Perhaps tomorrow they can focus on that, right now they are on vacation … but!   Ah yes, there is always a “but” in times of change and Sotomayor-Castillo’s film captures these moments with perfection.
