Mill Creek Entertainment To Release Four First-Time-On-Blu-ray Release On Apr. 7 • Trapped, Eddie Macon's Run, All The Pretty Horses And Heroes

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Not one.   Not even two.   But four, count’em, four new— priced-to-collect — first-time-on-Blu-ray releases are on their way from Mill Creek Entertainment on Apr. 7.

That’s right four never-on-Blu-ray films … so let’s get to it.

Let’s start with director Luis Mandoki’s 2002 film adaptation of the Greg Iles’ best selling 2000 novel, “24 Hours,” which was released theatrically as Trapped (Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow’s 24 TV series starring Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer was a hit at the time, hence the title change to avoid confusion).

The film stars Kevin Bacon as a Joe Hickey, a professional kidnapper, who specializes in quick grab-for-cash schemes that last no more than 24 hours.  It’s a family affair as his little gang includes his wife, Cheryl (Courtney Love — The People vs. Larry Flynt, Sid and Nancy) and Marvin (Pruitt Taylor Vince — Natural Born Killers, Identity), his cousin.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Their latest target is the Jennings family, Will (Stuart Townsend — Queen of the Damned) and Karen (Charlize Theron), he a research scientist and his wife a former nurse, who now cares for their asthmatic daughter, Abby (Dakota Fanning).

It seems simple enough, grab Abby, extort some cash and then let her go, but we quickly learn that there’s more going on with Joe and Cheryl and this particular target.   Trapped devolves into an intense cat-and-mouse game that puts the life of the young Abby in jeopardy … it will not end well for some of those involved in this grab-for-cash kidnapping.

Also making a Blu-ray debut on Apr. 7 is writer/director Jeff Kanew’s 1983 film adaptation of the 1980 novel from James McLendon, Eddie Macon’s Run (which wasn’t even published when it was acquired by the film’s producers) … McLendon finished the book, but died before the film’s debut.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Based on actually events — pattern after McLendon’s own family — we are introduced to Eddie Macon (John Schneider, who would gain stardom with The Dukes of Hazzard television series, in his first starring role) as he escapes from Huntsville in Texas.   Through a series of flashbacks we also learn how he came to be in prison.

Meanwhile, Marzack (Kirk Douglas), a former police office, who now works for the prison system, goes in pursuit of Eddie, it’s personal.   That’s the least of Eddie’s problems as he is captured by the Potts while making his run for the Mexican border.   They, Daryl (Tom Noonan) and Rudy (Jay O. Sanders), think that Eddie is a cattle rustler and after hauling him back to their place … they hang him!

Only a last minute change of heart allows Eddie to live … he will eventually escape the Potts, save a wild young woman from being raped (played by Lee Purcell) and continue his run for the border with Marzack in pursuit.   Does he catch Eddie … or will there be more twists and turns?  Apr. 7, Blu-ray, to find out how this dash for freedom ends!

Rounding out the quartet of new Blu-ray releases from Mill Creek Entertainment on Apr. 7 are director Jeremy Paul Kagan’s 1977 film release of Heroes, starring Henry Winkler, Sally Field and Harrison Ford (in his first film role after the fame gained from Star Wars earlier in the year) and actor-turned-director Billy Bob Thornton’s film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s 1992 novel, All the Pretty Horses, starring Matt Damon and Penélope Cruz.

MVD Entertainment Group To Release A Blu-ray Edition Of Director Jim Gillespie's Eye See You Starring Sylvester Stallone On Apr. 14

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The big-budget Sylvester Stallone film that virtually no one saw is finally on Blu-ray!  That was the word this past week from MVD Entertainment Group.

Director Jim Gillespie’s 2002 film adaptation of the Howard Swindle novel, “Jitter Joint,” which was originally titled D-Tox — but reached the domestic theatrical arena as Eye See You — will be making its Blu-ray debut as a Marquee Collection entry on Apr. 14.

A serial killer, a victim’s pool (an all-star cast at that) and an isolated, snowbound, location … all the makings of a genre-fan delight.   And it is exactly that, but after the initial cut of the film, Universal Pictures put it out for test screenings in, get this, 1999 and didn’t like the responses.

Perhaps they were thinking that it was another Copland or The Specialist or Cobra, or something.   Maybe they didn’t see director Jim Gillespie’s 1997 hit, I Know What You Did Last Summer, which is about a serial killer knocking off high school kids who did something stupid one night.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyIn any case, Universal ordered some re-shoots and a new ending … and then shelved it.   They gave up.  After Labor Day in 2002 DEJ Productions somehow got the rights to it and took it out theatrically on a whopping 78 screens with no promotional budget … and then Sony Pictures Home Entertainment picked it for release on DVD and, get this, released in on New Year’s Eve of 2002 (do you think they buried it, or what).   Tell me if anyone actually saw this film based on this wacky distribution scheme!!

MVD Entertainment Group steps to the table with a long-lead (plenty of time to beat the promotional drums), a new Blu-ray presentation and some nice extras, making this Marquee Collection edition the first time that director Jim Gillespie’s Eye See You is actually going to get a proper release.

Jake Malloy (Stallone) is an FBI agent investigating a series of murders involving law enforcement officers (nine in all).   The investigation hits close to home when his former partner becomes the next victim … and while looking for clues at his residence, the phone rings and it is the killer!  He is calling from Malloy’s own home and taunts him with his next murder victim, Malloy’s fiancée, Mary (played by Dina Meyer — Starship Troopers, Star Trek: Nemesis … and as Kerry in the Saw films)!!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyHer murder drives Malloy over the edge and after months of heavy drinking he tries to kill himself.   Doc Mitchell (played by Kris Kristofferson) comes to his aid and has him brought to his clinic in the wilds of Wyoming … a place reserved for cops who have seen too much, lived through too much and need time to recover.

Among the recovering law enforcement clients are a diverse group (genre fans will recognize this as the pool of potential victims), including a former SWAT officer named Peter (Robert Patrick — Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Cop Land, The Faculty … and who was on X-Files at this point in time playing John Doggett), Lopez (Angela Alvarado-Rosa — Judgment Night, Freedom Writers), a Brit by name of Slater (Christopher Fulford), “Reverend” Jones (Courtney B. Vance … perhaps best known as Carver on Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery … as Indiana Jones in the TV series, The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones), Jaworski (Jeffrey Wright — as Bernard on Westworld) and more.

Plus the staff includes Jenny (Polly Walker), Doc’s assistant, Hank (Tom Berenger), the cook, Manny (Hrothgar Mathews) and more.   And last, but not least, we have Agent Chuck Hendricks (Charles S. Dutton), who made the arrangements for Malloy to be admitted to Doc’s clinic, and who sticks around to make sure that his friend is doing well in the new environment.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyOK, now we have a remote location and a victim’s pool, but these guys and gals are experienced, some are even packing, so it doesn’t look like the right place to start a killing spree, which is what serial killers do.   But when a snow storm hits, all bets are off at the body count quickly mounts.

Your job is to figure out who the killer is and how the hell he got into the clinic.  Is it a cop?   Is it Hendricks (how convenient that he decided to stay)?   One of the staff (a ringer)?   Eye See You is a nifty blend between stalker/serial killer tales and mystery thrillers … and it has a terrific cast.

As to bonus goodies, MVD Entertainment Group is giving you two movies for the price of one.   You get the original D-Tox movie (never-before-seen, except at Universal test screenings) and Eye See You, the re-cut version that DEJ released theatrically.

You also get eight deleted scenes and video sessions with actors Robert Patrick, Kris Kristofferson, Charles Dutton, Polly Draper, Robert Prosky, Christopher Fulford.

Paramount Home Media To Release The Police Squad: The Complete Series On Blu-ray On Apr. 14

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media announced this past week that a Blu-ray edition of The Police Squad: The Complete Series (all six insane episodes) will be available for fans to enjoy on Apr. 14.

It was before its time, even with two Emmy nominations, ABC canceled this comedy series after just four episode were broadcast.   Executives at the time thought that audiences were simply too stupid to follow the humor.

After four episodes of Police Squad — starring Leslie Nielsen as the legendary Detective Frank Drebin — aired in March of 1982, the network pulled it.   The remaining two episodes that were in the can were dumped into empty spots on the broadcast schedule during the summer of that year.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyOff course, history proved that there was indeed a monster audience for the shenanigans of Detective Frank Drebin.   The character (Leslie Nielsen, of course) resurfaced six years later in the theatrical smash hit, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, pulling in close to $80 million at the box office … and spawning two sequels (The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear in 1991 and Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult followed 1994).

As to bonus goodies for this hi-def Blu-ray presentation, there is a gag reel, the video session with Leslie Nielsen, the featurette titled “Behind the Freeze Frames,” two casting tests featuring Alan North (as Capt. Ed Hocken) and Ed Williams (as Mr. Olson), plus “Producers' Photo Gallery of Scenery, Sets & Props,” “List Of Celebrity Death Shots” and “Production Memo Highlights.”

Arrow Video's 4K Film Restoration Of Writer/Director John Hughes' Sixteen Candles Arrives On Blu-ray On Apr. 14

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K film restoration of writer/director John Hughes’ Sixteen Candles ready for Blu-ray release on Apr. 14.

What irony, Sixteen Candles is joined at the hip with The Breakfast Club and it was a wonder that Hughes ever got through the maze of pre-production to direct either one of these teen-angst comedy gems.

The story is very well known that Hughes got an offer to make The Breakfast Club, but only if he could hit the required production budget.   That went on for a while and the film kind of went into limbo.

And then magic happened, he had to make a living so he delivered the script for National Lampoon’s Vacation (released theatrically in July of 1983) and then another script for Mr. Mom (released in August of the same year) … the former did $61 million at the box office and the latter pulled in $67 million.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeySuddenly John Hughes is the hottest guy in Hollywood.  So Universal Pictures comes knocking on his door and takes The Breakfast Club under its wing, agreeing to absorb the production costs if he delivers Sixteen Candles first.  Deal!

Sixteen Candles arrives in theatres in May of 1984, but not before getting into a ratings battle with the MPAA.   They wanted it rated R, but finally gave it a PG rating.

It pulled in less than $24 million and the critical reviews weren’t all that hot, but the film is now considered one of the iconic coming-of-age comedies of the 1980s … it certainly made Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall stars, and yes that is John Cusack in one of his early roles.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
But get this, the film that everyone was worried about, The Breakfast Club, made its theatrical debut in Mid-February of the following year and pulled in twice what Sixteen Candles did … it also created “The Brat Pack” (for better or worse) — the entire cast of The Breakfast Club, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy, with Rob Lowe, Demi Moore and Andrew McCarthy joining the group after the success of St. Elmo’s Fire in June of 1985.

As to the bonus goodies for
Sixteen Candles, there are two viewing options for fans to choose between.   The original theatrical version (clocking in at 92 minutes) and an extended cut featuring the famous “Cafeteria” scene, which didn’t make the final cut (94 minues).

There is also the 2008 retrospective documentary titled Celebrating Sixteen Candles and seven newly-minted featurettes — “Casting Sixteen Candles,” “When Gedde Met Deborah,” “Rudy the Bohunk,” “The In-Between,” “The New Wave Nerd,” “Music for Geeks” and “A Very Eighties Fairytale” — plus both soundtracks are included here (the original theatrical soundtrack and the pre-2003 substitute home soundtrack).   Lastly, there a downloadable pdf file of the shooting script.
