Bayview Entertainment has tabbed Mar. 31 for the DVD
debut of writer/director Megan Griffiths’ intense coming-of-age drama, Sadie.
The film opened at South by Southwest Film Festival
(SXSW) in March of 2018 and quickly garnered filmmaker Megan Griffiths (her
other SXSW opener in 2012, Eden, won
the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature and she won the Emerging Woman
Award for her direction …other films include The Off
Hours, The Night
Stalker, etc.) solid reviews and great
audience buzz.
From there, Sadie
moved out to a nice run on the festival circuit with stops at the Seattle
International Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Festival, Tacoma Film Festival
and the Tallgrass Film Festival … picking up more buzz and more awards, with
Tacoma bringing home a Best Performance win for the film’s star, Sophia Mitri
Schloss (Lane 1974 and
as Emma in The Kicks
television series).
And speaking of Sophia Mitri Schloss, here she plays
the title role of Sadie, a 13-year old, whose father is deployed to Afghanistan
again … as the narrative unfolds we soon discover that it appears that her
absent father prefers it that way. She
lives with her mother, Rae (Melanie Lynskey — The Perks
of Being a Wallflower, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Heavenly
Creatures, etc.), in a trailer park (the
lovely Shady Plains Mobile Home Park at that) and has convinced herself that
if, and when, her father finally returns home everything will get back to
normal.
Sadie has created, in her mind, a kind of “dad is
really here” syndrome … and that is going to cause serious problems as
Griffiths’ story unfolds. Indeed, her
mom, alone, first attracts the attention of one of Sadie’s school counselors,
which Sadie dismisses as not being a threat.
But when a footloose ex-pilot moves into the trailer
park, Cyrus (John Gallagher Jr. — 10 Cloverfield Lane, Underwater),
and also takes an interest in her mother, that’s too much for her to deal with;
the anger bubbles to the surface.
Filmmaker Megan Griffiths’ preps the story, winds it
up … and turns Sadie loose. Powerful
stuff.
