Paramount Home Media announced this past week that a
Blu-ray edition of The Police Squad: The Complete Series (all
six insane episodes) will be available for fans to enjoy on Apr. 14.
It was before its time, even with two Emmy
nominations, ABC canceled this comedy series after just four episode were broadcast. Executives at the time thought that
audiences were simply too stupid to follow the humor.
After four episodes of Police
Squad — starring Leslie Nielsen as the
legendary Detective Frank Drebin — aired in March of 1982, the network pulled
it. The remaining two episodes that
were in the can were dumped into empty spots on the broadcast schedule during
the summer of that year.
Off course, history proved that there was indeed a
monster audience for the shenanigans of Detective Frank Drebin. The character (Leslie Nielsen, of course)
resurfaced six years later in the theatrical smash hit, The Naked
Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!,
pulling in close to $80 million at the box office … and spawning two sequels (The Naked
Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear in 1991 and Naked Gun
33 1/3: The Final Insult followed 1994).
As to bonus goodies for this hi-def Blu-ray
presentation, there is a gag reel, the video session with Leslie Nielsen, the
featurette titled “Behind the Freeze Frames,” two casting tests featuring Alan
North (as Capt. Ed Hocken) and Ed Williams (as Mr. Olson), plus “Producers'
Photo Gallery of Scenery, Sets & Props,” “List Of Celebrity Death Shots”
and “Production Memo Highlights.”
