Mill Creek Entertainment Tabs Nov. 17 For The 12-Film Blu-ray Promotion Of Rita Hayworth: The Ultimate Collection

Mill Creek Entertainment stunned genre film fans last week with news of the release of a 20-film collection on Blu-ray titled Hammer Films: The Ultimate Collection on Nov. 17 featuring such horror and action classics as The Revenge of Frankenstein, The Strangler’s of Bombay, The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll, These are the Damned and The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb.

This week, Mill Creek Entertainment is at it again.   Only this time the focus is on the glamor of Hollywood as embodied by 1940s and 50s screen legend Rita Hayworth.

Also streeting on Nov. 17 will be the 12 film/6 disc Blu-ray collection titled Rita Hayworth: The Ultimate Collection, which not only showcases many of her greatest film achievements, but comes priced — on Blu-ray, mind you — to collect at just $3.82 per film.   Film fans, you can’t own classic movies on Blu-ray at that price point … except when Mill Creek Entertainment steps up and makes it so.

Without further ado, let’s get to it.   It is no secret that throughout the 1930s Rita Hayworth’s career was going nowhere fast.   Minor parts, bit parts, unbilled walk-ons, but she endured and caught the eye of Columbia Pictures head, Harry Cohn, who made her first a star … and then a legend.

The film that changed the direction of her career was the 1940 romantic comedy directed by Joseph Santley, Music in My Heart, co-starring Tony Martin.   It is the earliest film included in this collection.  

This success was followed with the 1941 romantic comedy, You’ll Never Get Rich, which featured Hayworth with Fred Astaire.   Of course, everyone knows of the dancing talents of Fred Astaire, but Hayworth had been a “hoofer” since her teens and this was the first time, on screen, that she was given the opportunity to strut her stuff!!  It too is included in this wonderful Blu-ray collection from Mill Creek Entertainment.

Things slowed down during World War II, but in February of 1945 she was back in director Victor Saville’s Tonight and Every Night … and then came the musical, Down to Earth, which was followed by Orson Welles’ 1948 film noir gem, The Lady from Shanghai.   All three films are here.

Also in 1948 was director Charles Video’s The Loves of Carmen, co-starring Glenn Ford.    Marriage issues during the late 40s and early 50s put a gap in her film career, but she was back with Glenn Ford in Affair in Trinidad in 1952, which was followed in 1953 with the first sound version of the story of Salome, which teamed Rita Hayworth (as Princess Salome, of course) with Stewart Granger and Charles Laughton.

Miss Sadie Thompson (an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s short story, “Rain”) arrived in 3D in 1954 — with José Ferrer and Aldo Ray — and then we continue with director Robert Parrish’s all-star thriller, Fire Down Below, teaming Hayworth with Robert Mitchum and Jack Lemmon in the summer of 1957.

And wrapping up this wonderful salute to the film career of Rita Hayworth are director George Sidney’s Christmas of 1957 musical triumph, Pal Joey, with Hayworth as Vera Simpson, co-starring with Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak and last, but certainly not least, we have director Robert Rossen’s 1959 Western, They Came to Cordura, teaming her with Gary Cooper, Van Heflin, Tab Hunter and Richard Conte … WOW!!

 

 

 

Paramount Home Media Selects Oct. 20 For The DVD Debut Of Writer/Director Peter Facinelli's The Vanished

The pandemic has really taken a toll on the theatrical market.  Last year at this time, as an example, we had 54 films that had pulled in over $25 million at the box office.  This year, there are just nine.   Nine … nothing in that range since March.

 

So many films that could have been released have either been shelved until sunnier times, or have been given a very expensive direct-to-streaming, followed by a direct-to-video launch.

 

Another one of these surfaced this past week from Paramount Home Media as news arrived that writer/director Peter Facinelli’s The Vanished will be making its way to the DVD on Oct. 20.

 

The film got a sneak-peek film festival release last February to generate “buzz.”  The plan was to take the reviews and either expand the film festival play dates or move the film into a summer theatrical release window.   March 15 came and all of that went down the drain.

 

The Vanished, starring Thomas Jane (The Mist, Deep Blue Sea, Dreamcatcher, etc.), Anne Heche, Jason Patric, and Peter Facinelli (directing only his second film), starts off simple enough.   Wendy (Anne Heche) and Paul (Thomas Jane) are on vacation with their daughter Taylor (played twins Sadie and Kennedy Heim), rolling down the highway in their RV.   End of day, RV park, rest for the night … simple.

 

If you are a fan of filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan and his misdirection stories; his wicked twists, then you get a hint of that here.   Wendy and Paul arrive at the RV park and a series of scenes play out that create tension and set up all sorts of red herrings … the people running the place are down-right nasty.

 

And there is the “cute” woman in the neighboring RV that catches Paul’s eye.  Before you can say “start the BBQ,” little Taylor has vanished.

 

Panic!!   The law arrives, Sheriff Baker (Jason Patric) and his sidekick, Deputy Rakes (Facinelli), and before we even get into searching for the missing girl, the family is informed that dangerous convicts have escaped from. the local prison, so that might be the reason for their daughter’s disappearance.  

 

From this point on, nothing is going to be normal.   Buckle up, grab the popcorn and settle in for a rollercoaster ride that will keep you guessing as to what comes next … and what comes after that!!

 

 

 

Arrow Video Restores Director Douglas Trumbull's Silent Running For Release On Blu-ray This Coming Nov. 17

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, announced this past week that a new 2K film restoration from the original camera negative (personally approved by director Douglas Trumbull) of Trumbull’s spring of 1972 sci-fi tale, Silent Running, will be available on Blu-ray on Nov. 17.

 

Douglas Trumbull had gained acclaimed as a f/x and visual effects wizard with his work on 2001: A Space Odyssey and Andromeda Strain, and was given the opportunity to direct for the first time.   The cast included Bruce Dern in the lead, with support coming from Cliff Potts, Ron Rifkin and Jesse Vint … filming took place, not in an elaborately build set, but in the interior of the decommissioned aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Valley Forge — if you think about it, that makes perfect sense for a spacecraft on a long “voyage.”

 

Of note, other members of the film crew making their debuts, were both Michael Cimino (future Oscar-winner for The Deer Hunter) and John Dykstra (Oscar-winning for his work on Star Wars and Spider-Man 2).

 

As to bonus goodies for the Blu-ray release of Silent Running, Arrow Video is providing two commentary options — a vintage commentary teaming Trumbull with Bruce Dern and a newly-prepared commentary option with film critics Kim Newman and Barry Forshaw.

 

Additionally, there are a half-dozen featurettes — “No Turning Back,” “First Run,” “The Making of Silent Running,” “Silent Running by Douglas Trumbull,” “Douglas Trumbull: Then and Now” and “A Conversation with Bruce Dern” — and extensive still galleries.
