Mill Creek Entertainment Preps DVD And Blu-ray Collections Of 12 Monkeys: The Complete Series For Release On July 14

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyPerfect.   Genius.   Those are just a couple of words that describe the latest DVD and Blu-ray release news coming from Mill Creek Entertainment.

On July 14 sci-fi fans — and for that matter, binge-hungry series consumers — can dive into 12 Monkeys: The Complete Series as either eight-disc DVD or Blu-ray product offerings.
Back in 1995, director Terry Gilliam, with inspiration gleaned from Chris Marker’s 1962 short film, La Jetée, teamed up with the writing duo of Janet and David Peoples to deliver the sci-fi thriller, 12 Monkeys.

A few notes about this.   First, David Peoples had previously teamed up with Hampton Fancher back in 1982 for the film adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel, Blade Runner, so adapting the concept of La Jetée was right in his wheelhouse.

Next, in 1992 he was nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay, Unforgiven, so he was a hot commodity when he and his wife, Janet, joined former Monty Python member-turned-filmmaker Terry Gilliam (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Time Bandits, Brazil, The Fisher King, etc.) for the film production of 12 Monkeys.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
It quickly became a sci-fi favorite among genre fans, earning Brad Pitt his first Oscar acting nomination.   It was just too good a concept to be limited to a single motion picture and so in January of 1995, 12 Monkeys began a four-year, 47-episode run on SYFY channel.

It’s 2043 and a deadly virus has ravaged the planet (sound familiar), but “Project Splinter,” headed by physicist Katarina Jones (played by German actress Barbara Sukowa — Johnny Mnemonic, Hannah Arendt, etc.), has a unique solution to the problem.   Go back in time to 2015 and stop the Kalavirus outbreak before it begins.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyTo this end, a nobody by the name of James Cole (Aaron Stanford — The Hills Have Eyes, X-Men: The Last Stand, Live Free or Die Hard), who seems to have a connection to the past, is recruited to be the guinea pig to go back in time and stop the mysterious Army of the 12 Monkeys, who were (are) responsible for the development of the Kalavirus.

In the past (2015), Cole meets an expert on viruses, Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull — Suits), and together they must do the dangerous detective work before time in the future runs out for the human race (the virus continues to mutate).

Does Cole succeed in his mission?   The answer is … no, no, you have to wait until July 14 for the release of both DVD and Blu-ray (for the first time) collections of 12 Monkeys: The Complete Series from Mill Creek Entertainment.

Evil: Season One On DVD From Paramount Home Media On June 30

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media will be bringing the CBS supernatural mystery series, Evil: Season One, to the DVD marketplace on June 30 as a three-SKU collection featuring all 13 episodes from the show’s first season.

Yes, the series was so well-received that it has been renewed for a second season.
So what’s the buzz?   We are introduced to Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers — Westworld, Manhattan, Divorce), a psychologist working in one of the New York boroughs (Queens) for the DA’s office, who runs into a nut job who claims that he committed crimes because, get this, he’s possessed.   When she butts heads with the prosecutor on the case — because she wants to run some additional tests on the guy — she is fired.

That does not bode well for a series … being fired in the first episode.   No problem, the defense includes this guy by the name of David Acosta (Mike Colter — as Luke Cage in The Defenders and the follow-on series, Luke Cage), who has something to do with the Catholic Church and convinces her to join the defense.   She needs a job, so she agrees.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
It is a life-changing decision.   During the first episode we focus on the defense of Orson LeRoux (Darren Pettie), and Bouchard becomes convinced that he may not be as crazy as he first seemed.   She also discovers that there is more going on — beyond just this case — than meets the eye.   She joins the team.

Her major nemesis is a Dr. Leland Townsend (played by Michael Emerson, perhaps best known as Ben Linus in the Lost television series), who is not what he seems, but is obsessed with demons and the occult.   What has Dr. Bouchard gotten herself into?

Find out on June 30 with the DVD debut of Evil: Season One.

MVD Entertainment Group Selects June 12 As The DVD Debut Date For Documentary Filmmaker Danny Garcia's Rolling Stone: Life And Death Of Brian Jones

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Documentary filmmaker Danny Garcia, who has examined the music careers of The Clash, Johnny Thunders and Sid Vicious, turns his focus on Brian Jones and the Rolling Stones with the June 12 DVD debut of Rolling Stone: Life and Death of Brian Jones from MVD Entertainment Group.

The year was 1969 and the Rolling Stones were on the eve of their legendary “American Tour 1969,” which saw a series of smash concerts, the Muscle Shoals recordings and Altamont.   It was nothing short of legendary.

1969 also was witness to the death of one of the original members, Brian Jones, who drowned — under mysterious circumstances — in July of that year.   It had already been determined, because of legal issues, that he would not be able to make the tour.

Garcia covers his life, his seven years as a Rolling Stone — the drugs and drinking that destroyed his career — and his untimely death.   Vintage footage, interviews and more are included in filmmaker Danny Garcia’s insightful production of Rolling Stone: Life and Death of Brian Jones.

Bonus features include deleted scenes, a “Behind the Scenes” featurette and the featurette titled “Scott Jones Files.”

Bayview Entertainment To Release Writer/Director Alfred Robbins' Mistaken On DVD On June 2

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Bayview Entertainment has circled the first street-date Tuesday in June (June 2) as the DVD release date for writer/director Alfred Robbins’ Mistaken (aka: Raltat).

Based on the mistaken identity experiences of Sophie Atta, identified as Laila Bassir (played by Nadia Kounda) in the Robbins film, we are introduced to her (thought a series of flashbacks) first in Morocco (younger version played by Mustarha Chikar), growing up.   Later Laila (Sophie) comes to the United States to study to be a nurse and meets Gary (Jonathan Regier), they marry, but eventually things go south.

Now a citizen and working as a nurse, she meets an Egyptian-born doctor, who has also become a United States citizen.   His name is Mohammed Atta (Firas Natour) … no, not the Mohammed Atta who flew American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, but Dr. Mohammed Atta, who lived at the time near Baltimore and had a practice, as a kidney specialist, at Johns Hopkins University Hospital (in the film he is an engineer).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
With the introductions out of the way and Laila’s character firmly established as anything but an international terrorist, she enters the very depths of hell in the days following the 9/11 attacks.   On a routine commuter flight from New York to Baltimore she is snatched up by the F.B.I. and interrogated for hours, despite the fact that she is six-months pregnant.
It matters not as Special Agent Valerie Cooper (Chantal Nchako) and her associates rip into her with threats and accusations to the point of abuse.

Filmmaker Alfred Robbins delivers a cautionary tale, not just of mistaken identity, but about making assumptions about people based on their religion or how they “look” … these biases can influence the judgment of people who are normally cold-stone sober as they search for the truth.

The great irony is that as Atta was boarding Flight 11 in Boston, Dr. Atta was seeing his first patient of the morning at Johns Hopkins.   One Atta, a mass murderer, the other Atta … a doctor out to save lives.

Titled Gamera: The Complete Collection, consumers get both the Japanese-language presentation, as well as English-dubbed viewing options for all 12 films.

Included in the collection are: Gamera (aka: Gammera the Invincible), Gamera vs. Barugon (aka: War of the Monsters), Gamera vs. Gyaos (aka: Return of the Giant Monsters), Gamera vs. Viras (aka: Destroy All Planets), Gamera vs. Guiron (aka: Attack of the Monsters), Gamera vs. Jiger (aka: Gamera vs. Monster X), Gamera vs. Zigra, Gamera: Super Monster, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion, Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris and Gamera the Brave.

Bonus features for this collection are currently being worked on by Arrow Video, but they promise to include archived featurettes, commentary tracks and a number of newly prepared items (update to follow).
