Oscilloscope Laboratories Picks June 16 For The DVD And Blu-ray Debut Of Director Alex Thompson's Saint Frances

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Oscilloscope Laboratories acquired the SXSW Film Festival sensation, Saint Frances, last August.   It was a major score, so many awards, so much promise.   An indie film that was going to make some very big waves … it may still, but the path is going to be very different.

So what’s the big deal?   The film itself, or course, but there is also the writing, the direction, the acting and the technical aspects of the production … the whole package, so to speak.   And, of course the big deal of Covid-19 and how the worldwide pandemic has impacted the film business.

Word arrived this week that since theatrical venues are shuttered, Saint Frances will be passing on any future play dates in favor of a DVD and Blu-ray launch on June 16.   That is very good news for anyone who may have missed the film’s limited theatrical run or the numerous festival screenings.

Saint Frances is written by Kelly O’Sullivan, who also stars as Bridget, a thirty-something, who is adrift and questioning where she stands in the world … more on that in a moment.   It is O’Sullivan’s first script, will she write more, who knows, but this first stab at it shows plenty of talent.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Her main calling is that of an actor, having been featured as Valentina “Voodoo” Dunacci in the two-season run of Sirens (2014/2015), plus a series of roles in indie films — Sleep With Me, Olympia and Not Welcome.   So, unless you were a fan of Sirens, it is unlikely that Kelly O’Sullivan is familiar to you.   Saint Frances could be your introduction … you will not be disappointed.

Parallel to O’Sullivan’s acting and screenwriting is the direction of Alex Thompson, who had made a series short films (
Calumet, Irene & Marie, Big Bad Wolf, etc.), but nothing feature-length.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
This debut effort pick up both the Audience Award (Narrative Feature Competition) and the Special Jury Award at South by Southwest in March of last year, and then Saint Frances marched out to the festival circuit and claimed wins at the Chicago Critics Film Festival, Champs-Élysées Film Festival, and the American Film Festival … plus O’Sullivan picked up writing awards at the Traverse City Film Festival and the Tallgrass International Film Festival.

By August Oscilloscope had locked up the distribution rights for theatrical and home entertainment.   That theatrical release, well, it happened and then we all know what followed.   The buzz was great, the audience reception was solid and the strong reviews just kept pouring in … and there you have it (you get your chance on June 16 to find out what the big deal is with the arrival of DVD and Blu-ray viewing options).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAs to the story itself, which was filmed in the Chicago area by DePaul film school alumni Alex Thompson, we are introduced to Bridget (O’Sullivan), who has sort of coasted through life and suddenly finds herself in her early 30s, waiting tables and wondering what’s next.   Family, nope.  Career, nope.  The clock is ticking.

It is at this point that she catches a break and lands a solid job as a nanny to a precocious (meaning: pain-in-the-butt) six-year old by the name of Frances (Ramona Edith Williams in her film debut).   Take care of the kid, get on your feet financially and things will start to look up … that’s the plan.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Of course, life doesn’t work that way.   Saint Frances takes some life-changing turns — call them ups and downs — as Bridget has to deal with some pretty tough issues and she ultimately finds grounding from unexpected sources, including from the “sweet” little monster that she is charged with caring for.

Tech aspects are solid, with some nice cinematography work by Nate Hurtsellers, plus there are some terrific supporting acting turns by newcomer Max Lipchitz as Jace, Bridget more-than-understanding “boyfriend,” and Charin Alvarez (Signature Move) as Maya, one of Bridget’s mothers.

As to bonus goodies, there is a commentary option from director Alex Thompson and writer/star Kelly O’Sullivan, who are joined by the aforementioned Nate Hurtsellers, plus there is a blooper reel and both deleted and extended scenes.

MVD Entertainment Group Sets Rewind Collection Status For DVD And Blu-ray Editions Of Director Tony Maylam's Split Second On Aug. 11

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Word arrived this past week from MVD Entertainment Group that Aug. 11 has a new entry in the company’s popular “Rewind Collection” series of films.  Available on DVD, and Blu-ray for the first time, will be director Tony Maylam’s 1992 sci-fi-themed detective/serial killer thriller, Split Second.

This indie film was released theatrically in 1992 and takes a look at a bleak future — in London — of what lies ahead in the year 2008!!    As a result of seemingly non-stop rainstorms (global warming) the city is more or less waterlogged (foggy London no more, replaced by wet and soggy London).

If that future prospect isn’t dreary enough, there is also a serial killer on the loose, no, that’s not quite right … make that a monster-sized serial killer who enjoys ripping the hearts (literally) out of its victims.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Tasked with tracking down this brutal killer is detective Harley Stone (played by none other than Rutger Hauer) and his nerdish partner, detective Dick Durkin (Alastair Duncan).   Stone is burnt out, and has absolutely no time for “proper” police procedures … he’s got a monster to catch.

His girlfriend, Michelle — a lady of the night — is played by none other than Kim Cattrall (Big Trouble in Little China, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country … and as Samantha in the Sex in the City television series) … and soon it becomes clear that the monster is stalking her.   A climatic, no-holds barred battle ensues in the London subway (“The Tube”) … save the girl, kill the beast or die trying.   Cool!

Mill Creek Entertainment Targets Aug. 11 For The Double-Disc Blu-ray Debut Of Neo Ultra Q

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Ultra Q returns on Aug. 11!

Mill Creek Entertainment has been systematically releasing programming from Tsuburaya Productions Co., Ltd Ultraman library since October of last year … 50 years of action drawn from 1,100 broadcast episodes plus 20 feature films.

The first series to street on Oct. 15 was Ultra Q: Complete Series 01, which originally aired on Japanese TV back in 1966, launching the “Kaiju” tales of fantastic monsters and super heroes.   On Aug. 11 the double-disc Blu-ray collection (complete with Digital Copy) of Neo Ultra Q, featuring all 12 episodes, will be available for fans to enjoy.

This is a “sequel” to the original Ultra Q, albeit 45 years later (broadcast in 2013 in Japan … did not reach these shores until 2017) … it is the 24th episodic adventure in the series overall.

In Neo Ultra Q, Jin Haibara (Seiichi Tanabe — Vampire in Love), Emiko Watarase (Rin Takanashi) and Shohei Shirayama (Hiroyuki Onoue) are three friends who join forces to investigate strange monsters (Kaiju) and other weird atmospheric anomalies.

Neo Ultra Q, available for the first time, is presented with its original Japanese language track with English subtitles.

Cleopatra Entertainment Readies Writer/Director Christian Neuman's Skin Walker For Release On DVD This Coming Aug. 11

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Cleopatra Entertainment, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, looks to Aug. 11 for the DVD debut of writer/director Christian Neuman’s gothic horror tale, Skin Walker.

The film, stars Udo Kier as the astranged father of Regine (Amber Anderson — Emma., White Lie, In Darkness), an attractive young woman who lives in constant of fear, made all the worse by an abusive relationship that she currently finds herself in.

The tipping point is reached when her grandmother dies a violent death and Regine returns home to investigate.   She returns home to a creepy old mansion, which genre fans will immediately recognize as the trappings for a good old fashion “haunted house” chiller.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThrough a series of flashbacks, which are designed to give us the backstory of why the family, and especially Regine, seem to be so dysfunctional, we learn that she had a pretty mess-up childhood, complete with a born-at-home brother by the name Isaac.

He may or may not be dead (don’t count on him being dead, but we won’t spoil the McGuffin) … and if still alive, is her brother responsible for the death of dear old granny?

Bayview Entertainment Preps Ten-Strong DVD Package Focusing On Rock Music Legends On June 9

DVDDVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Bayview Entertainment will keep rock fans humming a happy note on June 9 with a ten DVD release package featuring music biographical profiles of the like of David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and more … so let the fun begin.

Of course it is always selective (a matter of personal music taste), but how about the DVD release featuring the late glam rock star David Bowie, David Bowie: Ziggy Stardust – The Essential Albums of All Time.   In-depth interviews with “Spiders from Mars” veterans, Trevor Bolder, Mick Ronson and Woody Woodmansey, along with vintage David Bowie clips are combined with a review of this definitive 1972 album.

Another Grammy-winning artist profiled in this June 9 collection from Bayview Entertainment is The Boss (13 Grammy Awards, if you are counting) himself in the DVD release of Bruce Springsteen: In Performance.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Critics and rock journalists take a look at the career and performances, including selected tracks such as “Glory Days,” “Streets of Philadelphia,” “Lucky Town” and more.

The Beatles … John, Paul, George and Ringo … look no further than The Beatles Up Close and Personal – The Early Years 1962 - 1966.   Relive the glory years with vintage interviews with the likes of Pete Best and Norman Smith … rare concert footage and more.

Rounding out this superb collection of rock star memories on DVD are Bon Jovi: Music In Review, Jimi Hendrix: Smash Hits – The Ultimate Critical Review, Essential Music of AC/DC: The Bon Scott Years, Metallica: Live Sh*T Binge and Purge, Pink Floyd: In Their Own Words and two separate DVD releases featuring Deep Purple — Deep Purple: Rock Review and Deep Purple: Videobiography.
