Word arrived this past week from MVD Entertainment
Group that Aug. 11 has a new entry in the company’s popular “Rewind Collection”
series of films. Available on DVD, and
Blu-ray for the first time, will be director Tony Maylam’s 1992 sci-fi-themed
detective/serial killer thriller, Split Second.
This indie film was released theatrically in 1992
and takes a look at a bleak future — in London — of what lies ahead in the year
2008!! As a result of seemingly non-stop rainstorms
(global warming) the city is more or less waterlogged (foggy London no more,
replaced by wet and soggy London).
If that future prospect isn’t dreary enough, there
is also a serial killer on the loose, no, that’s not quite right … make that a
monster-sized serial killer who enjoys ripping the hearts (literally) out of
its victims.
Tasked with tracking down this brutal killer is
detective Harley Stone (played by none other than Rutger Hauer) and his nerdish
partner, detective Dick Durkin (Alastair Duncan). Stone is burnt out, and has absolutely no
time for “proper” police procedures … he’s got a monster to catch.
His girlfriend, Michelle — a lady of the night — is
played by none other than Kim Cattrall (Big
Trouble in Little China, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country …
and as Samantha in the Sex in the City television
series) … and soon it becomes clear that the monster is stalking her. A climatic, no-holds barred battle ensues in
the London subway (“The Tube”) … save the girl, kill the beast or die trying. Cool!
