Mill Creek Entertainment Tabs Nov. 17 For The DVD Release Of Director Wes Llewellyn's The Farmer And The Belle: Saving Santaland

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Mill Creek Entertainment has tabbed Nov. 17 as the DVD debut date for director Wes Llewellyn’s The Farmer and the Belle: Saving Santaland, a faith-based true story that has received the Dove Family Approved seal for “All Ages.”

In a prologue, we are introduced to Belle Winters (younger version played by Livi Birch), who loves her grandmother, known as “Grammy” (Sandra Ellis Lafferty).   Grammy gives her a bracelet, which contains inspirational messages and is something of a treasured family heirloom … she also gives the ten-year old some life-lesson advice, but some of that will be quickly forgotten as events unfold.

The young Belle is excited to wear the trinket and does so on a Christmas season visit to the Santaland Festival, where she has a “pen pal” relationship with a kid named Josh (young version played by Benji Russell), who lives on the farm that comprises the Santaland attraction.

The initial joy of meeting Josh and visiting Santaland quickly turns to a life-altering disaster as Belle stumbles into a muddy hog pit, loses her Grammy’s gift and is humiliated by the experience … her pen pal relationship with Josh comes to a bitter end.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

We come to the present day and learn that Belle (played by Jenn Gotzon-Chandler — Saving Faith, Love Different, God’s Country, The Good Book, etc.) became a famous fashion model and has now, at the age of 35, decided to bring her career to an end … an offer to represent an adult diaper product was the kind of a message that perhaps it might be time to explore other things.

It is tough.  Belle lives in something of a New York City bubble.   She’s important, she’s beautiful … she’s is somebody.   But what to do?   In what can best be described as something of a moment of crisis, Belle decides to connect with her past and return to Santaland and see if she can unearth her missing bracelet.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

A fool’s errand?   What could Belle possibly find in rural Georgia, at Santaland, 25 years later?  And what of Josh (play by Jim E. Chandler as an adult Inheritance, The Colors of Emily, Saving Faith, etc.)?   Certainly, he has moved on.

We will tell you this much, The Farmer and the Belle: Saving Santaland — on DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment on Nov. 17 — is inspired by actual events.   So maybe, just maybe, Belle might find more than she ever imagined on this trip back to Santaland.

Icarus Films Sets The DVD Debut Of Director Robert Kramer's Route One/USA For Nov. 24

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

It was only a few weeks ago that we remarked on how “cool” it was that Icarus Films was releasing the double-disc DVD collection from French filmmakers Amélie Harrault, Pauline Gaillard and Valérie Loiseleux titled The Adventures of Modern Art.   An award-winning look at the Parisian world of Modern Art, featuring the lives, legends and art of Picasso, Max Jacob, Stein, Apollinaire, Hemingway, Matisse and Cocteau.

This week, the release news from Icarus Films is equally impressive.   On Nov. 24, look for the double-disc DVD release of the newly-restored time capsule road trip from filmmaker Robert Kramer, Route One/USA.

Filmed in 1988, Route One/USA is a cathartic “road movie” from Kramer, who had spent nearly a decade out of the country making (mainly) critically-acclaimed “foreign films” — his 1984 Berlin International Film Festival-winner, Notre Nazi, was in German and French and his 1980 Venice Film Festival-winner, Guns, was in French (as just two examples).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

In any case, Kramer returned to the United States with his friend Paul McIsaac, who was a doctor, world-weary from ten years of fighting diseases in Africa … he had been the subject of Kramer’s 1988 film, Doc's Kingdom.   Together they embarked upon an epic journey from the beginning of U.S. Route One at the Canadian border (Fort Kent, Maine) all the way to Miami, filming their journey in what can best be described as part-documentary, part-cinema verité stream-of-conscious chronical of Doc’s encounters and adventures … and certainly, Guerrilla filmmaking at its very best.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The film opened at the Toronto Film Festival in the fall of 1989, jumped over to the Berlin International Film Festival in February of the following year and a had limited arthouse run domestically in November of 1990.   Kramer returned to France and, sadly, died of meningitis in 1999 … some retrospective screenings and then, Route One/USA was forgotten.

Re-discovered, restored and brought back to the arthouse circuit, Route One/USA will now be available on DVD from Icarus Films on Nov. 24.

This sprawling epic-of-a-travelogue captures the world of 1989 (along Route One), HIV was running rampant — ironically, Doc leaves Africa and the hopelessness of a decade of fighting diseases there, only to find himself at the film’s end joining the battle against AIDS in a rundown Miami clinic.   Somethings seem unchanged; others places (and people) lost and now long forgotten.

Bayview Entertainment Announces Four New "HNN Presents" Films On DVD For Delivery To Genre Fans On Dec. 01

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Bayview Entertainment announced this past week that there will be four, yes four, new additions to the company’s popular “HNN Presents” line of horror thrillers on DVD this coming Dec. 01.

In conjunction with the Horror News Network, the world of genre filmmaking is explored far and wide to find tasty tales of terror, horror stories that challenge the senses and film delights about those nasty things that go bump in the night.  So, without further ado, let’s see what genre fans are in store for come the first of December.

Let’s begin with HNN Presents: Anatomy of Monsters from director Byron C. Miller.   Andrew (Jesse Lee Keeter) is a hunter, not with a rifle or bow and arrows, but with duct tape, a sharp knife and rubber gloves … he prowls, not the forest, but the bar scene.

Andrew fashions himself a serial killer.   Meet a lovely, unsuspecting lady at the local watering hole, a few drinks, some casual conversation and then a secluded place, like a nearby motel room, for pleasure … only his “pleasure” is a little twisted.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

On this particular night, things are a little slow, that is, until “Sarah” (Tabitha Bastian — Beloved Beast, ECCO, Remnants) strikes up a conversation with him.  Before you know it, he has her in the motel room and it looks like that’s it for her.  They talk, we get a little backstory on each of them, she’s tied up, ready for the slaughter and … well, not everything is as it seems.   Wicked.

Next, we turn to director Ate de Jong’s home-invasion thriller,
HNN Presents: Deadly Virtues.

Tom (Matt Barber — Atticus in Downton Abbey) and Alison (Megan Maczko — A Hologram for the King, Me and Orson Welles) have settled in for the evening when they are attacked by an intruder that we will come to know as Aaron (Edward Akrout).   He knocks Tom out, ties him up and dumps him in the bathtub … Alison, she is neatly tied up and the taunts, the suggests, the seduction begins.

What a lovely weekend.   Aaron, an expert in bondage, quick with the banter, and capable of horrible, horrible things is going have his way with Tom and Alison … a most unwanted house quest to be sure.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

HNN Presents: A Young Man with High Potential is from writer/director Linus de Paoli and it features Piet (Adam Ild Rohweder), a nebbish grad student, who would like nothing better than a little female company.  A little chubby, bright, but very shy … he can only imagine such a thing.

And then along comes Klara (Paulina Galazka), a student from Poland, and they end up on a project together.   She’s attractive, friendly and everything that our Piet would love to have … love to have, keep that in mind.   He misinterprets her outgoing nature and that eventually leads to an ugly misunderstanding.

Embarrassed, a plan is hatched and it is as funny as it is sad; dangerous and yet so very inept.  Seriously, if Piet didn’t have bad luck, he wouldn’t have any luck at all.   And then, there she is, in his apartment … like we said, bad luck for Piet.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Rounding out this four strong “HNN Presents” promotion from Bayview Entertainment on Dec. 1 is the Dutch-language chiller, HNN Presents: Meat, from the filmmaking team of Victor Nieuwenhuijs and Maartje Seyferth.

Loathsome, the butcher (played by Titus Muizelaar), who is unnamed throughout, runs a butcher shop and lusts for women, but must settle for the local hooker, who feels nothing for him.   Frustrated, he turns his lustful intensions on his employee, a lovely young woman by the name of Roxy (Nellie Benner), who has been spying on her boss (via video).   He makes overtures, has his way with her … a conquest; a happy man.  He is soon found dead.

Enter Inspector Mann (also played by Muizelaar), whose job it is to find out who killed the butcher.   Roxy is interviewed … and she begins to work on the detective.   Will he too end up dead?

ClassicFlix Dials Into Dec. 15 For The Release Of Both DVD And Blu-ray Editions of Director Archie Mayo's Marx Bros. Classic A Night In Casablanca

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

ClassicFlix, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has tabbed Dec. 15 for the Blu-ray debut of director Archie Mayo’s 1946 comedy gem, A Night in Casablanca, starring the Marx Brothers.   A DVD edition will also be available on the same date.

1941, June, theatres nationwide had the latest film from Groucho, Chico and Harpo — better known collectively as the Marx Brothers.   It was The Big Store, but sadly, it would be the last film from the brothers for five years as Dec. 7 brought World War II to America.   It was also their last film at MGM (Go West, At the Circus, A Day at the Races, A Night at the Opera … it was an impressive run).

In a running-gag publicity stunt, Groucho went full-tilt at Warner Bros. when they sent a routine inquiry as to the nature of the proposed film title “A Night in Casablanca.”   They owned the rights to the Joan Alison and Murray Bennet stage play, “Everybody Comes to Rick’s,” which was, of course, produced and released theatrically as Casablanca, winning Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Director for Michael Curtiz in 1942.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

It was simply too tempting for Groucho to pass up.   The letters were published as part of the film’s advertising campaign and are every bit as funny as the film itself.   Somebody in the legal department was just asking about the nature of film … the rest, they say, is history!!

World War II is over, but Casablanca is still a city of intrigue.   Indeed, three consecutive managers of the Hotel Casablanca have been mysteriously murdered.   Through a series of bizarre events (think: Harpo), Ronald Kornblow (Groucho) ends up as the new manager.
That’s a problem for Count Max Pefferman (Sig Ruman), who is actually a Nazi in hiding by the name of Heinrich Stubel, as there is a treasure in stolen French art hidden somewhere in the hotel, and this new manager must be dealt with.

Through a series of bizarre events (again, think: Harpo), the treasure is discovered, Kornblow and his buddies, Rusty (Harpo) and Corbaccio (Chico Marx) are arrested and it looks like Stubel is going to be able to make off with the loot.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Quick, a show of hands, who believes that Stubel is going to outwit the Marx Brothers?

Bonus features include a live-audience audio recording where the Marx Brothers tested material for the movie, plus there is a treasure trove of vintage radio commercials promoting the film and an extensive image gallery featuring stills, posters, lobby cards and other materials used to promote the film (not sure if Groucho’s letters are included … those are worth a look-see).
