Oscilloscope Laboratories' Relaxer Arrives On DVD And Blu-ray On July 16

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
256 levels of hell!   You read that right … 256 levels of hell are experienced by one man, on his couch — in his underwear — as the world creeps ever closer to the end.   That is what Oscilloscope Laboratories has in store for those in need of some non-romcom comedy relief on July 16.

The film in question is writer/director Joel Potrykus’ cinema of the absurd, Relaxer, which will be available as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings on that date.

The film opened at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March of last year to some terrific buzz, worked the festival circuit — both domestically and in some selected foreign markets — and then Oscilloscope took it out theatrically to the arthouse market place.    Again, to solid reviews and the approval of audiences lucky enough to discover it.

For the record, the ARR comes in at 109 days.

It’s 1999 and the approach of the Y2K meltdown has seized the nation.   The forthcoming end of the world has certainly had its way with filmmaker Joel Potrykus’ favorite actor, Joshua Burge (as Marty in Potrykus’ Buzzard; as Trevor is Potrykus’ Ape).   He plays Abbie, an adult slacker, who is ensconced in his living room as he awaits the sure to be meltdown.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyTo pass the time, his brother, Cam (David Dastmalchian — Animals), makes him a bet, well, actually, throws him a challenge (with a potential payout of $100,000).   Beat Pac Mac by getting to all 255 possible levels (a daunting task) and then achieve the 256th level, where in theory the game begins to consume itself.   This has to be done without leaving the couch!!

There are, today, websites devoted to the discussion of the 256th level of Pac Mac, so it is a real thing.   It is damn near impossible to get to … like pitching back-to-back-to-back no-hitters.

Now, imagine a slacker, on-task, who accepts such a challenge and never leaves the couch.   The term “gross” immediately leaps to mind, and that’s being gentle; kind.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyTime passes.   A lot of time passes, but Abbie stays on task.   People come, people go, the end of the year — and humanity — creeps closer and all the while Pac Man is played in a desperate effort to get to level 256.

How does it end?   Ha!   July 16 for those unable to catch the film in a nearby arthouse venue (the film will continue to play in various spots as the street date approaches) will be the perfect point in time to find out if Abbie survives the test.

Bonus goodies include commentary from filmmaker Joel Potrykus, a deleted scene and a pair of production featurettes — “Behind the Scenes of Relaxer” and “Milk Party.”

Icarus Films Selects Aug. 13 For The DVD Debut Of Documentary Filmmaker Mila Turajlić’s The Other Side of Everything

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Icarus films announced this past week that Serbian documentary filmmaker Mila Turajlić’s very personal look at the history of Serbia, The Other Side of Everything, will be making its domestic DVD debut on Aug. 13.

It has been a long, but very fruitful, road to the home entertainment marketplace for Turajlić’s documentary, which is built around the history her family’s home in Belgrade (more on that in a minute).   It opened at the Toronto International Film Festival in mid-September of 2017 and then proceeded to work the festival circuit for nearly two years … and that is even after Icarus gave it a two-theatre arthouse showcase in July of last year.

During this globetrotting tour, The Other Side of Everything pulled in numerous awards and glowing critical reviews … and, as is often the case, it takes a home entertainment push to get a film of this caliber out to a much-deserved wider audience.   Icarus Films has taken its time building the awareness levels and that will certainly pay dividends come Aug. 13.

Turajalic’s family — her great-grandfather — acquired a roughly 2,600 foot apartment in a Belgrade building that also housed the Ministry of Defense and the Supreme Court, plus several foreign embassies.   When Tito came to power in the aftermath of World War II, much of the apartment — consider “bourgeois” — was divided up into smaller units, with rooms locked off.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

This is the life that her mother, Srbijanka, was born into.   Locked rooms and a communist paradise ... friends were instructed to knock three times, so that the family would know it was not the secret police (they only knocked once!!).   She would becume a university professor and a pro-democracy activist.

It is through her mother and the history of the apartment that Mila constructs her film.   A history lesson of Serbia unfolds that is both chilling … and surprisingly, uplifting as her mother also had the belief that things would some day get better.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Filmmaker Mila Turajlić weaves her tale with interviews with her mother and friends and blends in archival footage — and the history the apartment, where she too grew up — to give us insights into the history of a country that is often misunderstood.

The Other Side of Everything is presented in Serbian with English subtitles.

Wild Eye Releasing's Clownado Arrives On DVD On Sept. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
It's an ill wind that blows no good … and such is the case with writer/director Todd Sheets’ Clownado, which descends upon the DVD marketplace this coming Sept. 17.

Wild Eye Releasing, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has got it covered.   Last week we talked about creepy dolls with the Aug. 27 DVD debut of writer/director Stephen Wolfe’s Doll Factory — which is worse, clowns or dolls … dolls or clowns?   Wild Eye Releasing has them both.

Indeed, one week we are up to our knees with hoards of creepy dolls, the stuff nightmares are made of … and then a few weeks later Warner’s Pennywise gets a run for his money with Clownado.   Clearly, Wild Eye is looking at the calendar and taking full advantage of the theatrical rollout on Sept. 6 of It Chapter Two with the home entertainment release timing of Clownado.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
This is an all-out indie gorefest, with the backbone of the story pitting cursed clowns, headed by Big Ronnie (John O’Hara — Ouija Death Trap), who got the whammy put on him by Autumn Moonspell (played by former adult film star Jeanne Silver) for mistreating his sideshow wife, Savanna (Rachel Lagen).

Big Ronnie and his clown terrors get caught up in a massive tornado and spin around here and there creating a path of blood and carnage in their wake.   Pitted against them are a motely crew that includes a stripper by the name of Bambi (Dilynn Fawn Harvey — Bonehill Road, Dreaming Purple Neon), Dion, who is a wannabe Elvis (Antwoine Steele — Vampire Holocaust), Rachel, a cute young thing (Sierra Stodden) and Hunter, the muscle of the group (Bobby Westrick).   It’s a mismatch, but fortunately there are enough victims to keep the bloodthirsty clowns busy.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyFor genre fans, both Linnea Quigley and Eileen Dietz do cameos, which is always a signal that this indie horror entry should get a look-see come Sept. 17.

As to bonus goodies, filmmaker Todd Sheets (Dreaming Purple Neon, Ouija Death Trap, Zombie Bloodbath, etc.) provides commentary and there are a pair of featurettes — “Behind the Scenes of Clownado” and “Joel Wynkoop: The Human Hurricane.”

Paramount Home Media Tabs Aug. 20 For The DVD Release Of Blue Bloods: The Ninth Season

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
There is good news … and there is good news.   First, the good news, CBS has announced that Blue Bloods, starring Tom Selleck as New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, will be back for a tenth season.

Next, the good news, Blue Bloods: The Ninth Season will be heading home on Aug. 20 as a five-disc DVD collection courtesy of Paramount Home Media.   All 22 episodes are included here, featuring the cases of the Reagan clan — Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), Jamie (Will Estes) and Erin (Bridget Moynahan) — plus the lives and happenings of the rest of the family.

This season also celebrates the forthcoming marriage between Jamie and his partner, Eddie Janko (Vanessa Ray) … will they make it down the aisle or could life on the streets of New York City get in their way (sorry, no spoilers)?   And, will the mystery of Danny’s wife, Linda, murder be solved?   On Aug. 20 it will all become clear!!

Juno Film Preps Diana Dors Two-Film Tribute For Delivery On DVD This Coming Sept. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Diana Dors, England’s answer to Marilyn Monroe, will be front and center on Sept. 17 with two new DVD releases from Juno Films.  MVD Entertainment Group will be handling the domestic sales and distribution efforts.

We’ve done the usual IMDB overlook on both director Leslie Arliss’ 1955 film production of Miss Tulip Stays the Night and filmmaker Maurice Elvey’s 1952 comedy, My Wife’s Lodger, and then went the extra mile to check out vintage Box Office Magazine editions (which can be found online) from both years to see if there was any indication that these films were ever released in the United States theatrically.

These films from the Adelphi Collection are essentially new to American audiences as the results from the extended search came up negative.   So if you are a film buff, a Diana Dors fan or just curious as to what the buzz was about the “bomb shell” in the late 50s and early 60s, be sure to check them out come Sept. 17.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's A Dog's Journey Arrives On DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack On Aug. 20

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has a tail-wagging treat for animal lovers ready for delivery Aug. 20.   That’s the street date for both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack edition of director Gail Mancuso's film adaptation of W. Bruce Cameron’s follow-up book, A Dog's Journey … his first, A Dog’s Purpose, was adapted for the screen in 2017.

The ARR is an industry average of 95 days and domestic ticket sales came in right at $21 million.

Dennis Quaid returns as Ethan, with Josh Gad reprising the voice of Bailey and Bailey’s next-in-line persona, Molly (and others that follow) — if you saw the first film, you will fully understand how both heart-breaking and touching the various incarnations can be.   Go ahead, grab the Kleenex, A Dog’s Journey is one of those feel-good movies that will bring both a smile to your face and a tear to your eye.

Bonus features include commentary by director Gail Mancuso (two-time Emmy Awards-winner for her work on Modern Family), deleted and extended scenes, a gag reel and five featurettes — “A Dog’s Sequel,” “Everyone's Best Friend,” “Working with Dogs,” “A Healing Journey” and “    Scoring the Journey.”

Lionsgate Home Entertainment Targets July 23 For The Home Entertainment Launch Of The Hellboy Reboot

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
You try your best to re-launch a film franchise, but in a crowded — make that, over-crowded — field of super hero movies even the best of intentions go awry.

Such is the case with director Neil Marshall’s attempt to bring Mike Mignola’s comic book creation, Hellboy, back into the film world of super heroes.

Titled Hellboy, not to be confused with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 film release of Hellboy, this Hellboy under-performed at the box office when it opened in mid-April … pulling in just $21.9 million (on a reported production budget of perhaps $50 million, plus P&A).

It falls to Lionsgate Gate Home Entertainment to try and recoup some of that red ink with a home entertainment packaged media push, which takes the form of a three-SKU product offering that streets on July 23.

That release date yields an ARR of 102 days.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyPlanned for release are Combo Pack editions for the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD edition.

Bonus features common to all three of the release configurations include deleted scenes and something called “Previsualizations” (we think that might be the title of a featurette, but details were lacking in the press release).

Exclusive to the Combo Pack SKUs is the three-part production “documentary” titled ““Tales of the Wild Hunt: Hellboy Reborn.”
