Oscilloscope Laboratories Targets July 2 For The Release Of DVD And Blu-ray Editions Of Director Miles Lagoze's Combat Obscura

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Afghanistan, the longest running war in American history.    Over 17 years and counting … and no end in sight.   The lessons learned from Vietnam and Korea, were either never really learned, or simply forgotten.

Miles Lagoze, right out of high school, joined the U.S. Marines as a combat cameraman.   It was a “job” that he could actually sign up for … in interviews, he says that he wanted to see the war; experience it.  He did.

Armed with a rifle, ammo, armor and a camera he went to war in Afghanistan, with the First Battalion, Sixth Marine Regiment, his mission was to film action for use by the Marine Corps and, by extension, the Pentagon for PR use.   He kept on filming and when his turn of duty was over he took home everything that wasn’t used by the Marine Corps.

Lagoze then went to school, film school, and began working on assembling the raw footage into a coherent narrative about combat — the unfiltered combat that doesn’t make the nightly news — and what emerged is one of the most-gripping combat documentaries ever filmed, Combat Obscura.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyOscilloscope Laboratories announced this past week that producer/filmmaker Miles Lagoze’s Combat Obscura will be available as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings on July 2.

The film worked the festival circuit and Oscilloscope then picked it for theatrical distribution — art house play dates likely right up until the home entertainment release date.    For example, this past weekend it was screened at the Cinematheque in Daytona Beach, Florida and at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
This is a fairly typical release for independent films.   And we are talking independent … Lagoze shot the film footage with rifle at the ready, learned how to edit it, produce and then bring a completed film to market.

What separates Combat Obscura from documentaries made by imbedded journalists is that Lagoze — his nickname among the infantry Marines was “YouTube” — was that he was a member of the combat team.   He filmed what the men wanted, what they were comfortable with … nothing was sanitized.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe result is a one-of-a-kind film.    Combat Obscura doesn’t explain the war, that’s probably not even possible after 17 years, but serves up a fragmented series of vignettes … pieces of time; moments of combat that put the viewer in the middle of the action.   It comes through loud and clear that the members of each platoon becomes one — a fraternity — for those moments and unless you are a member of that brotherhood, you would never be given access.

Bonus features include a view session with filmmaker Miles Lagoze and a collection of his actual Department of Defense videos.

MVD Entertainment Group Bestows Rewind Status On Writer/Director Sidney Lumet's Find Me Guilty For Blu-ray Release On Sept. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
MVD Entertainment Group has come up with a gem for its next Rewind Collection inductee.   Heading to the home entertainment marketplace on Sept. 17 as a newly-minted Blu-ray release will be none other than writer/director Sidney Lumet’s 2006 courtroom tale, Find Me Guilty.

Lumet saw this bit of American history — the true story of the longest recorded criminal trial — just too good to pass up.   He was no stranger to court room drama, having been nominated for Best Director for his 1983 film, The Verdict (nominated Best Picture and Paul Newman for Best Actor), and having delivered 12 Angry Men (nominated for Best Picture and Best Director), how could he say no to a collection of Wise Guys on trail in a slam dunk case!

It gets even better, one of the defendants — all were members of the Lucchese crime family — was ordered “whacked” and shot five times by his own cousin.   He was serving a thirty-year jolt and was offered a deal … squeal and your sentence will be “looked at.”    He said no.

This particular Wise Guy was named Giacomo "Jackie" DiNorscio and action star Vin Diesel was given the role.   Already the star of The Fast and the Furious, Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, Diesel got to play against type and was given a real “make-over” (makeup wise) to play the wisecracking, nothing-to-lose mobster.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe trial itself turned into something of a farce as the Feds thought that it would go quickly and piled 20 defendants into one case.   Once it became clear that it was not going smoothly, the judge refused to separate the individuals into separate trials for fear of the whole thing ending up as a mistrial.   And then, DiNorscio elected to represent himself, which made his co-defendants actually very nervous, but as Lumet’s film unfolds we soon learn two things — there were no good guys or bad guys in this mess (the Feds were playing fast and loose) and DiNorscio had a natural way about how he presented himself (Vin Diesel has a ball with this) ...  a real “wise guy,” if you will.

In the end, the jury liked him … and acquitted the entire group of defendants.   18 months wasted.

Bonus features include the featurette titled “A Conversation with Director Sidney Lumet.”

Paramount Home Media Tabs Aug. 20 For The DVD Debut Of NCIS: New Orleans: The Fifth Season On Aug. 20

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
NCIS: New Orleans wrapped with the broadcast of episode 24 on May 14 and about the same time CBS announced that Special Agent Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula) and his team will be back for a new season in September.

To celebrate, and of course, to take full advantage of the timing of the arrival of the new season, Paramount Home Media announced this past week that NCIS: New Orleans: The Fifth Season (a six-disc collection) will be available for fans to own on DVD this coming Aug. 20.

Number one in its time slot, with roughly 11 million fans tuning in each week, there is no doubt that retailers will be stocking up for the case action featuring Pride and Special Agents Christopher LaSalle (Lucas Black) and Meredith “Merri” Brody (Zoe McLellan), plus CCH (Carol Christine Hilaria) Pounder as coroner Dr. Loretta Wade.

Arrow Video's 4K Scan Of Writer/Director William Friedkin's Cruising Available On Blu-ray On Aug. 20

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has announced a new 4K scan from the original camera negative (approved and supervised by the filmmaker himself) of writer/director William Friedkin’s 1980 film adaptation of New York Times report Gerald Walker’s 1970 novel, Cruising.

The Blu-ray presentation will be available on Aug. 20.

Interest in the book as a film adaptation — a story about an undercover cop investigating a serial killer of gay men in the Greenwich Village area of New York City — begin as early as 1971, with industry trade reports surfacing in 1972 indicating that Paul Morrissey, fresh from the underground success of Trash (1970) and Women in Revolt (1971), had signed on as the director of the project.

Production was to begin in early 1973, with both Timothy Bottoms and Jeff Bridges (who had both come to prominence after their 1971 performances in The Last Picture Show) being considered for the role of the undercover detective.   However, the project blew up and Morrissey turned his attention to what would become his cult masterpieces, Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) and Blood for Dracula (1974).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyIt wasn’t until 1979, when producer Jerry Weintraub (who had been chalking up annual Emmy Awards nominations for his TV music specials featuring the likes of John Denver and Neil Diamond) entered the picture and William Friedkin came onboard as the director, that Cruising was back in the limelight.

A backstory appeared in the New York Times indicating that Weintraub had been in contact with the filmmaker over a number of years to direct the project, but Friedkin was concerned that he didn’t fully understand the culture.   Although he had adapted Mart Crowley’s gay “cat-fight” play, The Boys in the Band, back in 1970 (prior to the success of both The French Connection and The Exorcist), Cruising was a very different world.   After some research, Friedkin decided to adapt the book himself … he took the barebones of Walker’s novel and freely adapted, which he kept secret during the film’s production.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Filming begin in July of 1979 — with a ten-week New York City shooting schedule — with Al Pacino in the role of Steve Burns/John Forbes, the undercover cop assigned to investigate the series of murders.   All hell broke loose among the gay community in New York City (familiar with the book), who did everything possible to disrupt the filming.

Even after the film was “in the can,” the controversy continued as the MPAA kept slapping the X-rating on it, which was cut, cut and re-cut to finally achieve the coveted R-rating.   This didn’t satisfy exhibitors who, despite the R-rating, treated the film, because of its subject matter, as an X-rated release.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyFriedkin’s adaptation of Cruising turns out to be part detective-thriller — who is stalking and killing gay men in Greenwich Village — mixed with the changes that Pacino’s character undergoes (i.e. “messed up”) while undercover.   The ending, although ambivalent, suggests that while undercover Pacino’s character may have committed one of the murders.

Bonus features include an archival commentary from filmmaker William Friedkin and two previously released production featurettes — “The History of Cruising” and “Exorcizing Cruising.”
