Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, through its Warner
Archive program, will be bring a Blu-ray edition of director George Cukor’s
1944 Best Picture nominee, Gaslight, to
market on June 25.
The film, adapted from the Patrick Hamilton play,
had been made just four years earlier in England and MGM took an immediate
interesting in remaking it for domestic audiences … but there was this little
detail. World War II!
First Vincente Minnelli was to direct and Melvyn
Douglas and Irene Dunne were rumored as being attached to the film. History records that Douglas dropped out and
Charles Boyer took on the role of Gregory Anton, and, of course, Ingrid Bergman
played Paula Alquist, winning Best Actress for her performance.
Of note, this was Angela Lansbury’s screen debut …
see was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Nancy.
