MVD Entertainment Group
announced this past week that the next Blu-ray entry under the company’s
popular “MVD Rewind Collection” promotional label will be none other than Robert
Radler’s 1993 martial arts thriller, Showdown. The street date will be Feb. 26.
In an establish prologue
we see a police officer by the name of Billy Grant (played by Tao Bo fitness
guru Billy Blanks) answer some sort of domestic disturbance call which quickly
escalates into an accidental death.
Guild-ridden over the death, Grant quits the force … but it is established
in these opening sequences that he is a gifted martial arts practitioner (that
will quickly become an important plot element).
We then shift to a high
school senior named Ken (played by Kenn Scott — as Raphael in Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, Shootfighter: Fight to the
Death, Sworn to Justice, etc.) and his down-on-her-luck mother, who
have just moved into town (filmed in and around Tucson, Arizona). He arrives at his new school and
immediately walks into a bad situation when he spots the lovely Julie (Christine
Taylor — Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) and thinks that it would be a
terrific idea to strike up a friendship.
Before you can say
“kick-some-ass” he is confronted by Julie’s boyfriend, Tom (Ken McLeod) and his
sidekick Rob (Michael Cavalieri) and roughed up. Here’s where it comes full circle, the
school’s janitor just happens to be Billy Grant and he befriends the overmatch
kid … if he to survive his senior year (and get the girl) he needs to learn
some defensive skills and Billy is just the man to be his mentor.
Meanwhile, just to close
the circle even tighter, the brother of the man Billy accidently killing in the
opening set-up, just happens have a karate school in town — he’s a nasty
fighter, with all sorts of criminal associates — and Tom just so happens to be
one of his students!!!
Showdown delivers exactly what it promises … plenty of
action and the parallel storylines will come together in a massive
no-holds-barred beat-down! Plenty of
action and, of course, a happy ending!
Bonus goodies are still a
work in progress at this time.
