Arrow Films, with
domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has
lined up a new 4K restoration (from the original negative) of cult filmmaker
Dario Argento’s 1975 (domestic, June of 1976) giallo mystery/slasher thriller, Deep Red. It will
arrive on Apr. 10 as a double-disc Blu-ray edition.
Howard Mahler Films (an
indie that handled horror and blaxploitation films during the mid-1970s)
handled the domestic theatrical released, which was dubbed in English and
heavily edited from the original Italian-language release. To get an R-rating, something like 26
minutes (99 and change versus 126 minutes) was removed by Argento … Arrow Video
is presenting both versions as part of this double-disc presentation.
As to bonus goodies, the
Italian-language presentation (longer version) includes commentary from writer/director
Dario Argento, who is joined by Argento expert Thomas Rostock, Claudio
Simonetti provides an introduction to the film and there are five featurettes —
“Profondo Giallo,” “Rosso Recollections: Dario Argento’s Deep Genius,” “The
Lady in Red,” “Music to Murder For!” and “Profondo Rosso: From Celluloid to
Shop.”
