The Criterion Collection teased the news one week ago. This past week they made the news official. The company’s first three 4K Ultra HD releases will be arriving during the month of November, including a stunner, writer/director Orson Welles’ 1941 film masterpiece, Citizen Kane … a 4K Ultra HD/3 Blu-ray Combo Pack release on Nov. 23.
The other two new-to-4K Ultra HD releases are auteur filmmaker David Lynch’s 2001 neo-noir thriller, Mulholland Drive (set for Nov. 16) and the directing team of Albert and Allen Hughes’ 1993 film release of Menace II Society (streeting on Nov. 23).
The Citizen Kane package features a new 4K film restoration with the 4K Ultra HD and one of the three Blu-ray discs showcasing the feature film presentation. There are three commentary options presented here … the first is a newly-minted commentary featuring Orson Welles scholars James Naremore (“The Magic World of Orson Welles”) and Jonathan Rosenbaum (“Discovering Orson Welles”), while the other two commentary options are vintage in nature, with auteur filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich providing one and legendary film critic Roger Ebert for the other (both from 2002).
Also included with the Citizen Kane package is The Complete Citizen Kane, a 1991 feature-length documentary from producers Christopher Swayne and Charles Cabot with narration by Leslie Megahey, a new video session with author Robert Carringer (“The Making of Citizen Kane”), a new video session teaming film critic Farran Smith Nehme with film scholar Racquel J. Gates and a massive collection of vintage filmed interviews that include the likes of Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Robert Wise and more.
Note, there will also be a three-disc Blu-ray presentation of Citizen Kane as a buying option.
The David Lynch 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack release of Mulholland Dr. is a new 4K film restoration supervised by Lynch himself and the director of photography Peter Deming (Emmy-nominated for Twin Peaks).
Bonus goodies include a deleted scene, on-set footage (unspecified), and video sessions from 2015 featuring David Lynch, Peter Deming, cast members Naomi Watts, Justin Theroux and Laura Harring and members of the production crew.
In addition to the aforementioned 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack release of Menace II Society (also available as a stand-alone Blu-ray selection), the Criterion Collection’s other Blu-ray releases during the month of November include a Blu-ray presentation of Federico Fellini’s La Strada on Nov. 2 and a six-disc collection of Once Upon a Time in China: The Complete Films (Nov. 16), which includes all five films in the cycle (1991 through 1994).
